watch out for those video games!
A story of how video games can be quite immersive. Better keep a closer eye on what video games your kids are playing. The Columbine high school shootings are a tragic reminder.

Complete, some chapters thin
Overall, this is a very useful review for medical students. The book is organized nicely, and covers all of the major gastrointestinal disease. The book also contains case presentations, which make the material more clinically applicable. The only drawback to this book is that certain sections are thin. For example, the chapter on GERD is very brief. In contrast, the chapter on diarrhea is quite long, detailed, and excellent.

Very Interesting, Especially....
This is a very interesting book, especially if, as most New Yorkers, the book's author included, you spent a lot of time at the Natural History Museum as a kid. Who would know of all the goings on there over the decades if someone didn't take the time to research it and get it all out there for you? The best thing about the book it that its an easy read-- nothing is dived into too deeply and the book moves fairly quickly from one story to another, each very different. The museum obviously must have many stories; for instance I noticed there was no reference to the famous Vladimir Nabokov who worked there, and the scientists at AMNH who finished his fascinating work on butterflies-- told in an entire, intriguing, book "Nabokov's Blues" only this year. But there are good sections on other celebrities connected to the museum, Margaret Mead, Roy Chapman Andrews etc. and many more recent or, accept to scientists, more obscure scientists and explorers. Thus, the book appears to have been somewhat selective in its topics, but a big history undoubtedly dictated this. Another good thing about the book its that it weds themes to stories; you get your share of conservation and other required awarenesses here. If the Natural History museum has always fascinated you, you'll enjoy this book. Re the museums history, keep in mind the Nabokov's Blues story above and, for kids, the writings for youth done by Roy Chapman Andrews-- Quest in the Desert; Quest for the Snow Leopard. These are classics and also full of memorabilia about the museum.

How it works, how it was invented, how it evolved.
A fairly concise yet complete review of the many variants of the famous Gatling gun. Here are traced its roots from the invention of Richard Gatling, its priciples of working, its evolution into the 20mm Vulcan and all the subsequent evolution thereon. Also included are a description of the 30mm GAU-8A Avenger cannon, mounted on the Thunderbolt tank-buster aircraft, the Phalanx Close-in Weapon System for ship protection, Vulcan Air defense System, pod mounted Gatling guns and a history of the development of the Gunship Aircraft. Probably the only book in commerce to treat every facet of these related but very specialistic topic. Very worth the price if you are curious about this fearsome weapon system.

A soldier telling it like it was.
General Crook minces no words in his autobiography, a book that gives you real insight into one of the nation's most renowned Indian fighters. A quiet man in real life and somewhat of an enigma to those around him, he had a unique understanding and appreciation for Native Americans and the injustices heaped upon them. In later life, he attempted to use his influence to help better their conditions. Crook never took his biography to a publisher -- that only happened long after he was dead. If anything, his narrative leaves you wanting more detail and less modesty about the role he played in history. The editor has done an admirable job in filling in the missing pieces. An important book for anybody interested in the people who built the West, or in influential military leaders in American history. I enjoyed this book immensely.

A Solid Bio of Polk
Parks has written a solid bio of "The Fighting Bishop" in this work first published in the 1960s. This book delves into Polk's family history, his days at West Point, how he got into the priesthood, his days as a bishop, his friendship with Jefferson Davis & Albert Sidney Johnston, and his feud with Braxton Bragg, among others. One sore point of the book, however, is that Parks has a great deal of respect for Polk and therefore hardly ever criticizes any moves made by Polk even though Polk is widely known as a below-average corps commander. Still, this a good bio (one of the few on Polk) and very much worth reading if you are interested in Polk.

A biography just like "Old Reliable" himself
Hughes' biography of Hardee is not unlike its subject: competent, professional, and unspectacular. The focus is appropriately on Hardee's Civil War career. The post-war years receive especially light treatment. Hughes does an excellent job of assessing Hardee's performance during each campaign and battle. To his great credit, he is more inclined than most biographers to be critical of his subject when warranted. Hardee's personality emerges less vividly from the book than we might wish. Perhaps this is due to a lack of insightful source material, or to the fact that Hardee himself lacked the charisma to be an ideal subject. Whatever the reason, you won't find Hardee particularly likeable or loathesome, but you will learn a lot about his role in the Civil War.

Tales, Do you want to read some tales
This book is a very, very, very good book. In this book the language is written in a neat way. In the beggining of the story it starts with a catchy line then goes "Once upon a time" like a childrens book.
There is four sections, the Northeast, the Southeast, the Southwest, and the Northwest. In these sections there is different short stories about the tales of that section like , "Turkey Girl"from the southwest section.
My favorite short storie is "The Girl Who Married the Moon". I like it because it has two people together, but one the moon in this case the moon is always working, but in the end they worked there problem out. I really liked this book.

In this book, Lawrence Joseph succeeds in revealing, without judgement, how the world of science can be as insular as any other. He explores the processes that eventually bring Lynn Margulies, the macrobiologist, and James Lovelock, the atmospheric scientist, together.
Their combined vision of a wholly interactive planet, of cause and effect endlessly mirrored through a timeless looking glass, is resisted by the scientific community. As authors of the Gaia Theory, they struggle with a revolutionary approach to viewing the interaction of the planet from both above and beneath the skin of the earth. For this, they endure the suspicion of other scientists from both disciplines who believe Margulies and Lovelock have sold out to the New Age concept of a holistic universe.
The reality of cause and affect, a notion readily accepted as common sense in the most pragmatic of circles, is resisted and often rejected straight out of hand by those with a protectionist view to science.
The struggle of Margulies and Lovelock, two creative-thinkers very different in their personalities as well as their areas of interest, provides an element of high drama. And their persistence in developing and expanding the Gaia Theory made for compelling, thought-provoking reading.
