Hexen: The Official Strategy Guide

This author really knows how to write them...
I have always been skeptical about buying strategy guides, but the author of this Hexen game guide really knows how to put it together to make the book totally understandable and easy to use. From the beginning where there is a brief synopsis of the game and what led up to it, to the in-depth analysis of the 3 playable characters, the monsters, and tactics to deal with them, what weapons to use for each different situation, and how to use the artifacts to your advantage. However, where this guide really shines is the walkthrough section. Extremely detailed, easy-to-read maps for all 31 levels, and the text accompanying the maps is like having your own personal tour guide along with you. Mind you, I don't like to use a strategy guide to spoil all the adventure, but when you play this game, you realize it is almost essential to have some 'help' along the way to victory against Korax and his minions. In closing, I would like to add that I hope to see more strategy guides from this author, as he is very player-friendly in his layout of his guides.

Everything you need to know about Hexen
Great maps. Extra Cheat codes in the back if you really want them. Helpful descriptions of each hub and what you are trying to do in each one. Because I had the book (I don't usually buy these kinds of books but I was really "stuck") I got deeper into how to use different artifacts that I normally just ignored. This made the game so much fun that I played it twice as two different characters.

Beautifully detailed drawings.
A young lad is inspired to draw ships by a challenge from his friend's mother - this developed into a life-long passion and in this book we see the results of that passion. 91 exquisitely-drawn pictures of historic craft from the 13th to the 19th Century are just part of this man's production - would that we could see more.
The detail is amazing; all the stays, halliards, sheets and braces are all in the correct positions; the rake of masts, type of tops, position of gunports etc. is accurate. All this is the result of years of travel and visits to museums, libraries and naval archives, in order to portray the heyday of sail as accurately as possible.
Arranged on facing pages, text by Stephen Howarth on the left, drawing on the right, this is the best collection I have seen in print.
Much of the early data is lost so the drawings of those ships must necessarily be educated guesswork, but generally speaking, if it looks right, it IS right ... and these do look right.
It is fairly unusual to see orthoganal views, normally they are side-on, but a good portion of Mr.Wheatley's drawings show the vessel in 3/4 profile, which gives a much better view of the whole aspect of the ship.
A pricey book, but a delight to the eyes and an inspiration to the amateur artist or modeller.

Pictures A-Plenty !!
If you are a just lover of Historic Tall Ships and especially if you are a serious Model Shipwright, this book is a must! The *large* pictures and historic details, make this book well worth the price. ...and the price here is a deal. I bought this book when it came out for the full price and don't feel I've missed out not getting it for the lower price here. I promise you, you will enjoy this book forever!

Hitchcock's Films

Robin Wood is the Preeminent Authority
Robin Wood is the Preeminent Authority on Hitchcock. Robin Wood is without question the greatest authority on the cinematic works of Sir Alfred Hitchcock. Years ago after seeing many films as I was growing up I decided to do some reading on the role of the Director. By pure chance I picked up and purchased Robin Wood's original edition of this book. Obviously it was at that time, myself still being in school very challenging reading for me. However, I was able to recognize brilliance over hypocrisy. Robin Wood has ever since remained the preeminent authority on Hitchcock's films. He has honestly admitted that his perspectives on some of his analysis have changed. This is not an outright statement that has had a change of heart or acquired a new taste in the aesthetics of Hitchcock's films. On the contrary, through ongoing analysis he has come even closer to the secret of Hitchcock's mastery of his art. An artist creates a work. A great portion of that work is constructed with conscious deliberate thought, some is intuitive and a small portion may be subconscious. Robin Wood, I believe has showed a continuum in his analysis of Hitchcock's work. Wood continues to explore the avenues of the intuitive and subconscious nature of Alfred Hitchcock, which manifests itself in his films. To this end I believe Wood has devoted a good portion of his life. The methods of the great pioneers have often puzzled conventional minds. I am not a great pioneer. I am puzzled. And what the heck does conventional mean? Happy reading!

Holy Ice: Bridge to the Subconscious

Not just another book on quartz crystals...
I remember reading this book when it first came out, and was impressed with it then. Recently, I purchased another copy and was reminded why I liked it so much. Mr. Dorland was a well respected art authenticator with much experience in research techniques. This background served him well, as he lets the reader follow the progress of his initial interest, and eventual in-depth research, into the synergistic effects of, and some techniques and practical uses for active rock quartz crystals.

The book starts with his examination into the background, and possible historical uses of the famous Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull, which he studied for six years. He is the one who brought the skull to the Hewlett-Packard lab to be studied. He documented his efforts and observations and it makes interesting reading. This led him to close his successful business and devote his time to researching the historic and traditional uses of electronic quartz crystals. What stands out for me, is how he ties traditional, shamanic / magical practices in with the modern 'scientific' usage of quartz in electronic devices, etc. He paints a convincing picture for there being a logical reason, (and not just superstition or placebo effect) why specific types of crystals have consistently been used the world over by 'healers and adepts' for augmenting and accelerating the effects of healing, meditative states, etc. If you have an open mind, but don't buy every idea that comes 'from the ethers' as being valid, this book will appeal to you. He makes a good case for all but the most dedicated of skeptics to take another look at how quartz crystals can be useful. For those people who already use crystals or are interested in possible 'metaphysical' properties this is a must read for anyone of rock quartz. You may learn a thing or two.

Excellent! A book on rock crystal from a scientific view...

Finally an actual book without mumbo jumbo on ROCK CRYSTAL. How to use it and why it works.
Photos, examples and how to acquire one of the crystal carvings.

I have read it several times and find something new each time.

A touch of Mysticism with alot of fact should be the way a book is written on such an important subject.

The Title
Just to read the title of "How Can You Mend a Broken Spleen?: Home Remedies for an Ailing World" says it all! I purchased the book through Amazon.com and received it just before a 22 hour trip by car to Ft.Myers Beach, FL. I'm usually bored out of my mind with car trips, but the minute I opened the book and began to read it, I couldn't put it down. Since my husband was the chauffeur, I just HAD to read several stories to him and he enjoyed it too. The Author should definitely receive 5 GOLD STARS for this book.

How about 6 stars! You won't be sorry...
I am a lover of books, and this one tops them all. Mr. Walker has an unparalleled ability to present important thoughts about daily life in a very humorous and poignant way -- all at the same time. He writes about real life in a way that anyone can relate to and get in touch with their own experiences. Don't miss this one!

Great book for those in therapy!
This is a great book for those in therapy too. It explains transference, dream interpretation, testing your therapist ... and it explains the best way for the therapist to react to all that. So far it is the best book I have read on the subject. It really helped me to understand myself better.

Tremendous
Truly a master work by Weiss. This book is a must-read for any practicing clinician or student of psychotherapy. It adds an entire dimension to the psychotherapeutic process, one in which the therapist plays a significant role in changing the patient's beliefs through his or her interaction with the patient. The perplexities of therapy become understandable with the help of this essential text.

Hunyadi: Legend and Reality (East European Monographs, No 178)
Published in Hardcover by East European Monographs (April, 1985)
Author: Joseph Held
Amazon base price: $55.50
Average review score:

Bravo!
Hunyadi: The Legend and Reality is a fantastic publication for anyone who wants to know about the life and times a truly astounding hero. Held takes you by the hand and leads into 15th century europe's economic, religeous and political system. You really get a well rounded perspective of what it was like to live in that day. Janos Hunyadi was so prominent a figure of that time that you simply cannot learn about this period without learning about the man himself. The book, while chalk-full of historical fact, is very exciting and entertaining. The story of Janos Hunyadi is an epoch tale that Hollywood has somehow missed. Get this book and read it.

Hunyadi: Reality And Insight
I found this book while doing research for a historical novel on 15th C Eastern Europe. It is clear that the author carefully researched the subject of Janos Hunyadi. He provides numerous references to document his work, so much so that it is difficult not to accept his interpretation of events when they conflict with other historical sources. He is very clear in laying out the complicated history of the region, particularly Hungary in its wars against the Osmanli Turks. He demonstrates very clearly why Janos Hunyadi was known as the "White Knight" to Roman Catholicism. He gives the biography perspective by explaining life at the various levels of society and providing vital statistics like mortality rates. More, he gives feeling to the pictures he paints, e.g., in describing the life of the average peasant or the siege of Belgrade. He uses quotes from contemporary sources to strongly support his own conclusions. I enjoyed this probably more for entertainment than for the richness historical facts; there is certainly nothing lacking in either in this work by Prof. Held. I thank him for introducing me to Hunyadi, the Turkish sultans, King Matthias, and the other key figures of the time and place. I also thank him for making me wonder if I could have survived an average life in those times, let alone face the challenges and threats faced by Janos Hunyadi.
