A ghost world of hopes and dreams
This book made tangible the hopes and dreams of the men and women who moved west in search of better lives. Fitzgerald has included maps, photographs and layouts of towns that illustrate the optimism (and in some cases, the deceptiveness) of investors and town founders who hoped to establish new communities. I have lived in Kansas most of my life, but never appreciated why earlier generations moved here, and ultimately why they thrived or failed. Fitzgerald clearly demonstrates how county seats, mines, railroads, rivers, and interstates can save or kill a town. In addition, he has included where to find the town's remains - if there are remains to be found. This book is easy to read in little snippets. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in Kansas history and the history of westward expansion, as well as anyone who enjoys good anecdotes that build connections to those who have come before us.

Listed by KC Star as the best traveler's guide to old towns.
I know the author personally. As I see above that Joseph W. Snell is listed as designer. Not so. He only did an introductory page. I typed & edited the manuscript. A sequel that is doing just as well is "Faded Dreams, More Ghost Towns of Kansas". Both volumes contain at least 100 old KS towns & histories, with maps and many pictures. Both are of great interest to the western history buff.

Thanks.

A Glimmer of Light From the Eye of a Giant:

enlightening, informative and convincing
What a title ! How promising ! The author may be ahead of modern thinking and mathematical inclinations and beliefs, but he sure has a clear view of what his own thinking process is. He says that many of the summation numbers and ratios he comes up with are present in the Great pyramid and in nature : i.e. in petal counts, in plant stems, in leaf arrangements and in pine cones. Whether the author discovered something new or only explained clearly something we simply never saw is irrelevant : His work remains exceptional and enlightening. This book may be small in size, but its contents follow an old law of nature explained to me by my own great-grandmother : 'Precious things often come in small containers and small doses.' Thank you, Joseph Turbeville, for your "receptivity of any little nudge that life may give you." And now, one question : Did the Egyptians know about quantum physics, and what they were doing while building the pyramids, or was it simply instinctive ?

Turbeville's Tables: Cosmic Connections and Organic Numbers
Someone once said, "Once in a while we stumble over a remarkable truth and then pick ouselves back up and continue on as if nothing had happened". What might account for this? The answer may lie in yet another quote from physicist, Dr. Paul Schock, who said, "Often we don't see something if we're not prepared to see it." In the case of Joseph Turbeville, author of "A Glimmer of Light From the Eye of a Giant", he was apparently ready to see whatever it was he stumbled upon. Fortunately for anyone even mildly interested in the great mysteries of the world - such as the Great Pyramid in Egypt, Dr. Carl Jung's concept of "synchronicity", sacred geometry, and the "number magic" of the Pythagorean mystery schools - Turbeville has given us a record of the discovery he stumbled upon. Explaining just exactly what that discovery was is not easy because it's not the kind of thing we're taught in school and it is not the kind of thing our current scientific paradigm is quite ready to acknowledge, with the exception of a few scientists on the cutting edge of quantum mechanics. This is the case despite the fact that Turbeville's discovery is solidly grounded in conventional mathematics. However, Turbeville, himself, gives a huge clue as to the nature of his discovery early in the book when he describes the mathematical tables he developed (the tables are nicely illustrated in the book).

Of the tables he tells us they were the result of playing with the numbers generated by the famous Fibonacci sequence. This numerical sequence is reflected in the natural organic growth process of plants and has been found, oddly enough, to be present within the geometry of the Great Pyramid. The tables generated their own intriguing sequences and patterns of symmetry and, like the original Fibonacci series, they repeatedly generated numbers reflected in the exact measurements of the Great Pyramid. If that were the extent of what the Turbeville Tables revealed that would be intriguing enough. However there was more. Turbeville writes:

"Other numbers that continually reoccur in the tables represent physical earth measurements of such things as size, density, angular velocity and rotational energy, or harmonics thereof."

Turbeville has apparently discovered something new under the sun. Or has he? While it may be new to us, as we stumble along seeking answers to the mysteries of the universe within the current scientific paradigm, the implications of the stunning correlations discovered by Turbeville suggest the possibility that he has rediscovered something that was known to the ancients but which was lost over the millennia. What we may have here is an archaeological find uncovered without ever having weilded a single stroke of pick-ax or shovel.

A complete review of this extraordinary little book would be remiss to not mention what Turbeville, a man with two degrees in physics, would probably just as soon not have to have mentioned himself. Yet he didn't really have much choice since this element played a large part in his discovery. That element is the concept of "synchronicity". Synchronicity is, simply put,a special catagory of "coincidence" identified by the degree of "meaningfulness" to the experiencer and often by the sheer improbability of the coincidence having occurred by mere chance in the first place. A number of leading synchronistic events occurred to the author leading up to and during the time of the work presented in the book. In some strange way, these events appear to be linked to the work itself and may have significant implications in regard to the deeper, and in this reviewer's opinion, the cosmic/universal nature of Turbeville's discoveries.

Lest one be tempted to dismiss such notions out of hand it would be instructional to note that this concept of synchronicity has, for some time now, been finding its way into the writings of scientists researching the area known as quantum physics. For example, two of the world's most highly respected physicists, David Bohm and Karl Pribram, have postulated the idea, based on quantum physics research, that the universe may actually be a hologram of sorts. Science writer, Michael Talbot, in his book The Holographic Universe (1991) discusses this idea in depth and notes that the phenomenon we call synchronicity may be a function of the way the universe is constructed. Talbot quotes physicist, Wolfgang Pauli, who, in a discussion of what is known in physics as "non-local quantum effects", says such effects "are indeed a form of synchronicity in the sense that they establish a connection - more precisely a correlation - between events for which any form of causal linkage is forbidden". Therefore, to suggest that synchronicity played a significant role in the process of Turbeville's work is not without merit. Indeed, it may be justified. There is a growing consensus among forward thinking scientists and philosophical thinkers that much of what we have thought of in the past as fanciful mysticism may actually be misunderstood aspects of reality and that our tendency to catagorize some of these things as mysticism is simply a reflection of our own scientific ignorance.

While "A Glimmer of Light From the Eye of a Giant" may be a relatively small book (just over 80 pages), the stunning information contained therein could undoubtedly generate volumes of discussion just on the implications alone. Turbeville, in fact, encourages interested parties to explore the further possibilities suggested by his findings. Highly recommended for anyone with even the slightest bit of interest in the subjects highlighted in this review.

Crafted with an accessible writing style
In God Exists: New Light On Science And Creation, Joseph Davydov employs contemporary scientific theory to prove the Book of Genesis account is accurate in its description of universal origins. He takes the reader step-by-step through the world of today's science, and shows how the latest advances in the physical and biological sciences shed new light and confirmation on the Bible's account of creation. Davydov surveys the subjects of matter and energy, particles and antiparticles, the Big Bank, black and white holes, the expanding universe, genetic codes, and photons, applying these s subjects to the six days of creation recorded in the Book of Genesis, and explains six evolutionary stages in which a relative material universe is crated by an Absolute Creator. Informative, challenging, fascinating, with a commendable scholarship and an accessible writing style, God Exists is highly recommended reading for students of theology, the sciences, and the relationship between science and religion with respect to the creation account of Genesis.

Joseph Davydov is a genius-a must read for any non-believer!
I just finished reading this book and I am amazed. Davydov's language can be understood by even the simplest people, yet at the same time conveys complicated scientific theory. His analogies are very helpful and he puts thoughts together very concisely. The book flows very well and will leave you questioning everything you ever thought you knew. By simply thinking about it thoroughly and putting scientific reason to it, Davydov succeeds in disproving atheistic beliefs and scientifically proving that there exists a Creator. A must-read for any atheist or agnostic.

YUMMY
I borrowed this book from a friend and after trying a variety of the recipies I knew I had to have it. They were easy to follow relatively quick to make and were raved about by the family. Problem was I had to return the book and did not think I could still get it. Thank you Amazon.com! Pick up the book and be sure to try the Fruit Cobbler (fantastic) and Husbands Delight. Neither recipe is low fat but worth EVERY calorie.

Has the most recipes in one book that I've ever used.
All of the seafood recipes are great. The desserts are sinful. All recipes are easy to read and ingredients are easy to find. Try the Poppy Seed Chicken. This book is not out of print, Bishop England High School is currently printing their 5th edition. They also have Gracious Goodness Christmas which will be featured in a national magazine in October. Their phone number is (843)849-9599.

The BEST
I have the 1993 updated version. Is there an updated version up to date

A great book to find lists for various baseball records
I've got the 1981 edition of this book and find it invaluable for locating not only the current holder of various records but also previous record holders and players who came close. It has a great index that shows all records and lists where a player is included. A must have for trivia buffs.

One of the Great Reference Works on the Old West
I acquired this book many years ago and have re-read it several times since. It is one of the most respected history books concerning the Old West because it relies on contemporary newspaper and similar accounts. It turns up in the bibliography of just about every worthwhile Western history book, and deservedly so.

Great Gunfighters of the Kansas Cowtowns
Some years ago, as a professor of Criminal Justice, I was asked to teach a course about the History of the Policing Profession and while scrambling for research, this was in the days before Internet etc., I discovered Great Gunfighters of the Kansas Cowtowns. I was very pleased with the content and the measureable factual accounts or as factual as they can be within this era. Actual newspaper articles and descriptions written at the time of the event are included in the book along with the exploits of lesser known lawmen/gunfighters of that era. Ben Thompson, Long Hair Jim Courtright, Dave Mather, Billy Brooks, Chris Madden, Squirrel Annie, Bear River Tom Smith are amoung lesser lights highlighted along with Wild Bill, Wyatt Earp and others. The newspaper accounts are quite factual, plus they revealed an evolution of the culture of the era. Great Gunfighters is not a novel, but is a display of the activities of several individuals who by one means or another contributed to both the allure and order of the cowtowns and other western sites.

The Great Pyramid: A Miracle in Stone
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (January, 1981)
Author: Joseph Augustus Seiss
Amazon base price: $5.95
Used price: $5.00

What an excellent introduction to study of the Great Pyramid
This is a wonderful book! Seiss does a first-rate job of concisely introducing the reader to the fundamentals of the Judeo-Christian spiritual content of the Great Pyramid. He does this in a way that is very engaging, and it makes the book hard to put down. It is also easy to read, despite Seiss' use of Victorian English writing, which is another plus. All in all, this is a book that I would highly recommend for anyone interested in studying the spirtual and scientific truths embodied in the Great Pyramid. It is concise, practical, and informative. In other words, it is excellent.

Very thought provoking. Amazing bibical parallel
It is ammazing how Seiss reads the physical structure in light of biblical history. The comparison of the dimentions of the Great Pyramid to Scripture and history of Gods' people both Jew and gentile is very thought provoking. I have found that recent findings do not discredit any of Seiss' observations. This just helps to enforce the divine being active in the building of this Great Pyramid as Seiss explains. The nonbeliver will have difficulty not to investigate further. There is very strong EVIDENCE of the divine intervention in the building of the monument. Divine science is displayed or should I say Science before science was discovered is displayed. For those who need proof of a God this book is a strong evidence that can not be overlooked. A must reading for those who wish to see where the divine is active in the physical aspect of man's workings. Another foot print of the almighty creator left on his creation for man to see and ponder on. Seiss is a man who has been blessed with great insight to the workings of God. His book on the Apocalypse also displays this.

The FDIC Exposed!
After 30 years in Texas banking, I've seen it all, done it all and thought I had heard it all.... until I read Jody Grant's book. Great inside story. A great book even if you aren't a banker or an ex-banker.

Insightful, compelling account of the 1980's banking crisis.
Perhaps the definitive work on the Texas Banking crash from someone who survived, but not without scars. Grant's attempt to save his failing institution is a lesson in crisis management. Furthermore, his insights into the reasons behind the banking crisis are particularly relevant in the high growth 90's. Finally, the detailed account of working with the federal gov't (particularly the FDIC) will force anyone considering working in a highly regulated industry to think again.

Great Old Testament Overview
Building upon a series of lectures given in the early seventies, Rohr and Martos expand on the ideas to look at the books of the Old Testament from a more macro view. From this stepped back view, the authors show how the books fit together, and how the parts of books such as Exodus build a contextual history of the times and how people are brought together with God. Rohr rejects fundamentalist or biblical literalist readings of the Old Testament, choosing to look at what the stories of the bible meant to those who originally wrote and shared the stories, and how they interact with our relationship with God today. This is one of the best series to lay out a good basis for studying the Old Testament and to understand what the bible is trying to tell us. A succinct volume that can be read again and again, it continues to bringing us into a greater understanding of faith and the Bible.

Great Themes of Scripture, Old Testament
This book presents an overview of the great themes which are common in many Old Testament books. The book is easy to read yet inspires the reader to see in these ancient writings deep truths which are still relevant today. Most powerfully the authors site multitudinous examples of God's abounding love for mankind. It is very inspirational.
