The Interval Training Workout: Build Muscle and Burn Fat
I love training this way. It is so efficient. I've lost more weight using the intervals than just doing one activity for 30 minutes without speeding up or slowing down. I especially love the XL (I usually run on Sunday nights and it clears my head for the week).

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to save time and become efficient at working out.

Interval Training - An essential part of any fitness program
In my capacity as Medical Director of 2 Fortune-50 companies I have had the occasion to review numerous fitness and health promotion programs. Dr. Nitti's Interval Training offers a common sense approach to physical fitness which is applicable to the average person as well as to world-class athletes. It is refreshing to finally see a fitness program that is scientifically based and does not attempt to repeal the laws of thermodynamics or the principles of human physiology. I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about physical conditioning.

An exceptional personal fitness program.
This book is like having my own personal trainer. As someone who exercises to stay in shape and manage my weight, my biggest problem has been a lack of an effective, step by step plan that I can use in the limited time I have to workout. The authors have distilled a very scientific, elite level exercise concept down to the point that a normal person like myself can use it easily and effectively in as little as 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. I have always had the motivation, but now I have the plan!

Another excellent Missing Manual
Another excellent Missing Manual product. There is more to iPhoto than meets the eye, and this book covers every detail in a conversational and user-friendly tone, without being cute or obtuse. You'll learn not only how to use iPhoto, but how to overcome some of its limitations, such as creating additional photo libraries after the first one fills up. The layout is attractive and legible. The detailed coverage of digital photography basics - buying a camera and taking good pictures - is another bonus.

As I've said of other Missing Manuals, if I were to write a guide, I'd want it to read like this one. Highly recommended.

goes way beyond iPhoto basics
This is a must have for any digital photographer planning to use iPhoto. Many books of this sort aren't much more than an explanded version of what should be in the program's help files. This book goes way beyond. One of the co-authors is a professional photographer; the first quarter of the book is his well written explanation of the essentials of composition and (digital) photography. The bulk of the book describes not just how you can use iPhoto, but how you ought to use it and why. I found the advice provided practical and non obvious; it has made me much more productive in my use of this software. As well, the authors provide pointers to some downloadable plug ins that make iPhoto much more useful - I can't imagine going without the iPhoto library manager and the betterhtml plug in. The only downside of the book is that it will be much less useful in a year or two after Apple has updated their product - but in the meantime, but it, use it, and enjoy it.

A "must-have" instructional reference
Collaboratively written by David Pogue (computer columnist for the New York Times); Joseph Schorr (software product manager and Macworld contributor); and Derrick Story (professional photographer and manager of the O'Reilly Network), iPhoto: The Missing Manual is a straightforward, comprehensive, authoritative, and thoroughly user-friendly guide to the free iPhoto 1.1.1. software for the Macintosh OS X. iPhoto: The Missing Manual is a superbly written and presented introduction to making the best use of iPhoto ability to create works of art from the footage of a digital camera. From setting up slide shows; to designing pages in a photography book; to file management, lighting techniques, and more, iPhoto: The Missing Manual is a "must-have" instructional reference for anyone seeking to make the most of their iPhoto software.

Ireland, 1912-1985 : Politics and Society

For Modern Irish History, Start Here ...
It is sad that the most read Irish historian outside Ireland happens to be the Republican fellow-traveller, Tim Pat Coogan. Then, Coogan seems to aim mostly at the Irish-American market. It is sad because Coogan's bias is not widely recognised, whereas if it was, his books would probably be subjected to more than unthinking acceptance. For me, Joe Lee is by far the greater historian, and this work by him beats anything of Coogans into a cocked hat. Not that they disagree overmuch, Lee is also a Nationalist writer, but his judicious weighing of the evidence and his unblinkered and unwavering devotion to historical truth make him by far the better of the two as a writer and a professional historian. One place where they disagree is on the position of De Valera, whom Coogan has dethroned from his former eminence among 'constitutional' Republicans. Lee supplies a far more sympathetic and truthful analysis of 'the Long Fellow'. Another area where American readers may be surprised is the short shrift given to Sean McBride, later a leading light of Amnesty International and a recognised 'jet-set liberal'. However, McBrides interventions in domestic Irish politics were mostly inept and disastrous for this followers and friends. Also for a believer in religious liberty, he was obsequious to the Catholic church in a most apalling fashion. Therefore, read this book to have your expectations challenged, and old opinions undermined. Possibly, the best Irish historical work to emerge from the 20th century, and a book that will be recognised as such.

Ireland, 1912-1985 : Politics and Society
Probably the most compelling book I have ever read. Its sheer intellectual scope is a joy to behold. A must for anyone who wishes to understand the complexity of Irish life.

Readable, objective work from a talented historian.
Well researched and entertaining, this is the most readable work yet written on the subject of Ireland's painful progress since the early part of the century. The closing sections of Lee's opus contain some intuitive conclusions about his fellow countrymen, particularly the sections entitled 'Character' and 'Perspectives'. Scholarly guff on the subject of Ireland's breach birth and subsequent delinquency are rarely the stuff of bedtime reading but this is easy on the brain, partly due to Lee's strictly logical approach to his theme and partly because of his enormous skill as a writer. If you want a book on Ireland that doesn't read as though it were written by some OAP in a tweed G-string who hasn't seen sunlight since 1965, this is the one for you. Terrific.

THE Source Book on Grilling
I purchased this book in 1989 and have prepared many of the recipes contained in it. They are without exception delicious. It also provides many helps on grilling techniques. If you're in the market for a grill, purchase this first. It will help you make a more informed decision.

The world's greatest cookbook
I received this book as a gift and have never been more pleased. The recipes are great - many formal or exotic and certainly unusual (just my taste!!!) My fiancee' and I cannot open this book without finding something more we want to try. All recipes are easy to follow and come out brilliantly. Our first excursion included stuffed salmon and artichokes with garlic. Since then we have made at least another dozen dishes. All superb - and they look like the pictures! By the way - the pictures are excellent... I LOVE THIS BOOK!

We have found that this book is a MUST for any avid griller!
Out of many of my cookbooks or recipes I keep coming back to this one. I have received more raves about my cooking when I use something from this book. The recipes are easy to read. The grilling tips are right on. I have found that I can try anything and it comes out great!!

Use of Quality Control Handbook 1983 - 1988
While I continue to find Juran's Quality Control Handbook useful today, it was especially valuable to me when re-engineering software to support Health and Welfare Benefit business systems.
Also, later at a federal agency I found Juran's "root cause" for quality problem management extremely valuable. Currently, I am pursuing a senior level advisory position in the federal government and hold the Certified Information Systems Security Professional credential. I find Juran's handbook still valuable and worth studying even in today's Internet world.

This is the best reference for the ASQC certification exams.
Planning on taking the ASQC certification exams? Need to bring the least amoutns of reference materials? This handbook and the primer are all you need

An outstanding reference handbook on quality!
I frequently use Juran and Gryna's Quality Control Handbook as a reference for my work and writing. It is a comprehensive reference for many issues in quality management, quality control, and statisitical process control. There are excellent discussions of quality as "fitness for use," and the true costs of poor quality. If you plan to take any of the American Society for Quality Control's certification examinations, this is a good reference. I used it for the Quality Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Quality Management, and Quality Auditing exams, and it served me well in each case. -William A. Levinson

It's the bullseye book I've been looking for
Uncompromising, fearless, and accurate--this is the one I've waited for. Finally, a Christian who boldly tackles issues like sweatshops, the World Bank and IMF, militarization and its effects on poverty, America's role in arms sales to the Third World, the environment, and world peace. The facts, figures, and graphs are there for anyone who wants them, but it's not a dull government-style book. It's rebellious and astounding, and makes you feel like taking action. It's also loaded with relevant scripture examinations and lists of resources (organizations, books, nonprofit agencies) who attend to the issues Thompson raises.

Enough with silly sunday School classes about stories and opinions; THIS should be the textbook of sunday School classes of the truly justice-minded churches of America.

Excellent Introduction into Global Issues & Christian Ethics
J. Milburn Thompson's book Justice and Peace is an excellent introduction into current global issues and Christian ethics. It is up to date, very readable and great for anyone who is looking to gain a better understanding of issues like poverty, human rights, the enviroment, weapons & disarmament, the post cold war world and the Christian response. It could easily be used for underclassmen in college or as a book for seniors in high school.

A great Introduction
This book by Prof. Thompson fills a gap in Catholic teaching on peace and justice. I would hope that this book gets wide circulation among clergy, especially deacons in the Catholic Church. This book gives a very good historical overview of the wide range of issues that Christian peacemakers face in the world.

As good as this book is as an introduction, I think an exploration of the fundamental principles of Catholic Social teaching would round off the presentation. Also, there is a need to discuss practical application of Catholic teaching such as Princpled Nonviolence and grassroots praxis.

The range and depth of the book is a welcome addition to a growing attempt by Catholic theologians and ethicists to apply the Gospel to the "signs of the times". Kudos for a job well done ! One will eagerly await the second volume of Christian praxis.

A BEAUTIFUL ALLEGORY
This is truly a lovely allegory. Kara, the central character in this story is a large, powerful falcon. He is a predator by nature, devouring smaller creatures. During one attack, he swoops down on a dove. The dove begs for her life and when Kara looks into her eyes and sees her fear, he relents and releases her. From then on, Kara changes his priorities. He learns to eat berries and vegetables because he can no longer bring himself to kill another living creature. The gentle dove in turn, welcomes Kara into the woodland creatures' community where they bond and welcome even more animals of all species.

Kara is a symbol for St. Paul, the former Saul known for his persecution of Christians. The gentle dove is a symbol of the Angel who appeared to Paul and who helped him rethink his priorities and become a Christian. (The dove, long recognized as the symbol of peace is often referred to in Scripture). The woodland creatures could be the Disciples or as a Christian community of caring. The end of the book reinforces the Christian theme beautifully by describing Kara's ultimate sacrifice -- he eats Manna (communion, perhaps) and takes a swan song (falcon song) flight into the sun. At the end of his life, he is transformed into a myriad of beautiful colors that his woodland friends know as being him. It is one of best books in Christian literature. It is a heart warmer. Please read it. It will really touch your heart.

The Falcon-KARA- transforms, consciously in this short story
I found this book yesterday in my search for a 'spiritual' book for my 13 year old female cousin. I started to read it to see if it was appropriate for her and ended up reading the whole story in less than two hours. It is beautiful- my thoughts are with it today. An adult wanting a short story...get it, also it could be read outloud to a small child, it is basically an animal story. Any reader of any age would enjoy its inspiring simplicity. Hint: The powerful Falcon becomes conscious of its predatory nature and chooses not to kill. Humanity's same struggles of right and wrong begin to stir in a Falcon's thoughts.

the tales that teach
I just love this book. The story from which the book takes its title profoundly affected me the first time I read it: it is the story of an Indian king who has to take part in a quest. This turns out to be an unexpected and thoroughly comprehensive lesson in life and the king emerges from it as a new and wiser person. You will also feel different after reading it. All the stories related in this book are incredibly old but can still connect with the deepest part of our souls. A book to reread.

Shimmering Zimmer
In the tradition of Johann Jacob Bachhofen and in league with those such as Joseph Campbell, Heinrich Zimmer"s "The King and The Corpse" gets about as good as you will find with respect to comparative mythology. I highly recommend any Jung readers to visit Zimmer's brilliant pages. I also find the melding of Western and Eastern myth systems to be superb. Here is an adventurous path to follow.

A must have for the chela on any esoteric path!

Indologist Heinrich Zimmer provides an easy to comprehend text taking four time-out-of-mind-myths and relating them to the esoteric "grail" path! It makes an excellent study for the seeker/student who would wish to follow Wolfgang Von Eckenback's "I learned my ABC's without the use of black magic".

In this writers opinion very few scholars have been suited to blend eastern thought processess into western concepts. Zimmer adeptly crosses this void as if stepping over a puddle of water, making "The King and The Corpse" highly informative and a joy of the heart to ponder.

If you are a seeker on any esoteric path you will find yourself and your 'map' within it's cover.

5 *'s for researchers, 4 *'s for everyone else
This is an excellent book for researchers, or anyone in the sciences. But for most people this book will be too difficult. If you would file a book titled "Theory Construction" under Architecture, you would have difficulty with this book.

The author discusses Concept Mapping (Entity Relationship diagrams for computer people) and Vee Diagrams, a template for structuring knowledge on specific concepts.

He shows how these two tools can improve learning in students. His examples start with a science class that uses a laboratory to teach practical skills and scientific method learning to students. For these students, the two tools become important for structuring knowledge and directing future research.

His results show that students need to make learning relevant to their existing knowledge and these tools will help do that. His results show an initial drop off in standardized testing after applying these tools, but then the scores pick back up and exceed standard rote-learning. I would agree with this -- if you're talking about the upper 20 % of the students. But I can't see the class laggards buying into these tools, as they require the student to be in love with their subject. These tools show you how to go deeper and how to find new knowledge.

I would recommend these tools for advanced classes and motivated students. I agree with the author that they will help researchers push back the envelopes of knowledge on their fields of specialization.

The Vee tool forces a template of things to "Think" and "Do" when you are formulating questions on a topic. Although perhaps tedious for some, it appears to work very well. I liked it very much. Students in a science lab can use these templates to decide what questions to research, what tests need to be run, how to know if they are successful, etc.

It is in this scientific area where the big payoff for these Vee charts are. I doubt that John Q. Public is going to find them as a useful tool on everyday learning decisions. For this reason I recommend this book for any type of researcher. The author describes how these Vee Charts have been used successfully by graduate students on their theses.

But John Q. Public can easily apply the Concept Maps. And, the author uses these maps as a tool to interview and assess students. The author also uses them to help develop books, articles and learning materials.

This book would be excellent for someone who has read Kuhn (scientfic revolutions) and wants to find some tools and methodologies for extending knowledge in his field.

I think the author is correct in most of his work. This book is particularly recommended for graduate students doing any kind of research papers.

Two powerful tools that aid learning!
This book teaches two tools. One is the V-diagram which involves a sceintific discovery approach of looking at an event which you ask a quetion about and that can be approached using reasong using concepts in terms of principles in the context of a theory or doing observations, recording transformations and forming conclusions. This is something you can use in everyday life. The second tool of "concept mapping" is like similiar mindmapping ibut is also different in it's structure. I found its method much better in terms of forcing me to organize concepts into principles into a whole of a theory. Its numerous examples of both tools from elementary and high school didn't dumb down the text but instead game me many insights because it explored common errors in reasoning and how a teacher can use these tools to diagnose what are the mistaken assumpitons in the student's mental model.. GREAT BOOK! Not a book of slick techniques. But two powerful tools once mastered that help you be lifelong learner on the job and in life.

excellent description of concept mapping
Concept Mapping is a way to organize, display, and develop information. This well-written and informative book describes very nicely how it can be used in education. For educators, scientists, information technologists, and anyone else interested in clear presentation of information.

Leathersex: A Guide for the Curious Outsider and the Serious Player
Published in Hardcover by Haworth Press (October, 1994)
Author: Joseph W. Bean

Average review score:

My #1 recommendation for a gay male leather audience
This was a rich delight to read. Many leatherfolk and leather-curious will appreciate the content, accurately described by the chapter titles: "Getting Started in Leathersex", "Playing with Power and Sex", "Playing with Pain", "Playing with Pleasure", "Playing with Life and Death", "Leather Relationships", "Anatomy, Physiology, and First Aid" and "Leathersex and Spirituality".

The author's writing style is both engaging and informative. "Leather Relationships" has an intimate quality to it, including an interesting interview with the founders, and another with the author's late boy. The latter interview and writings around it answer, as best I've seen, the question "What is a 'boy'?" "Playing with Pain" included information on some techniques for pain processing and storage that I'd not run across in book form before. "Leathersex and Spirituality" is a short but welcome chapter.

The book flows well. The author does not shirk from addressing edgy topics when relevant. The index is exhaustive.

I particularly recommend "Leathersex" to a gay male leather audience.

Words for thought in the novice or experienced mind.
It can be difficult to balance between talking down to those who will feel they have a lot of experience in BDSM and tallking over those who are just learning about BDSM. This book does a good job of looking at a wide range of activities and interests, some of them for the first time, so that newbies can feel grounded while advanced kinky folk can mull over the concepts. Even though the book grew out of Bean's own journey toward becoming a master, I think the book can speak to anyone regardless of vanilla sexual orientation. However the book often reads more like it is geared toward the bottom or submissive partner in a relationship.

an excellent enyclopedia for leathermen of all levels
Joseph Bean does an outstanding job of explaining, demystifying and clarifying many aspects of BDSM. It is from a gay male perspective and would probably not be of tremendous interest to hets or lesbians, but gay & bi/pansexual bio- & transmen should thoroughly enjoy Bean's work, no matter what their level of involvement in BDSM.
