a very powerful book!
This is one of the most powerful, most important and almost the only book on the market today that deals with boy-love. It has a lot of history and it deals with the contemporary situation of boy-lovers in the world. I would give much more than five stars if I could because this book deserves that.

The Best Intro to Dario Fo
This book offers a fantastic introduction to Nobel Prize Winner Dario Fo's theatre, cultural context and roots. It's essays discuss his performance, his writing and the wonderfully controversial and comical elements of Fo's unique theatre. The essays are by Fo specialists all over the world and they are excellently introduced by the editors (Farell and Scuderi), both eminent Fo specialists themselves. "Stage, Text and Tradition" is a very clear, concise and illuminating presentation of one of the greatest actors/performers/authors of own time. If you are in to theatre and life, I strongly recommend this book!

Darkness Fears: A Tale of the Moon-Chosen
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (December, 2002)
Author: Joseph R. Armstead
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

A Darkly Imaginative, Intelligent Occult Thrill-ride!
DARKNESS FEARS is the kind of quality horror suspense-thriller that should gain a wide readership. The story of Professor Patricia Silver, herself a victim of violent homicide at the hands (or should I say "fangs") of a secret sect of vampires, as she investigates criminal action in the occult underworld is mesmerizing! Mr. Armstead has taken a relatively interesting secondary character from his earlier novel, NOCTURNES AND NEON, and fleshed them out as a vital, driven and interesting lead character in this adventure into the mythical city of New Barrington's vampire underworld. Professor Silver is a fascinating study in contrasts: a little bookish and shy, secretive and dangerous, intelligent and impetuous, dead and yet alive. As is his standard, the author takes familiar horror trappings, like ghosts and zombies in this case, and he turns the old cliches inside-out. Too, Mr. Armstead's vampires are NOT the same old tired set of bloodsucking killers with which readers are accustomed. "The Moon-Chosen", his vampire clan empire, are vampires for the New Millenium: stylish, corporate, media-savvy, irreverent, ultra-lethal, and just plain twisted. DARKNESS FEARS is a fun, ghoulish piece of entertainment I would heartily recommend to anyone looking for some new thrills in horror fiction! Don't miss this one!

Dawn Land: A tale of extreme mythic power
I picked up Dawn Land when I browsed through my local library, bringing it home to read because the cover looked interesting. However, after the first few pages I found myself transformed into Bruchac's world. I experienced the rare feeling I get with too few books where I can almost feel the authors world with my senses. I belive this is because Bruchac avoided the pitfall some fantasy authors fall into by not treating their characters as real human, day to day people. Even though the setting is hundreds, maybe thousands of years ago in North America, one can easily slide into the landscape which is offered. That and a incredibly rich adventure story make it to my mind an incredible good read! I have also thought some good movie producer should put this Native American tale to film. I would die to see a high quality film of this book.

I feel that Mr. Ranade has done a great job by writing such a reader friendly book but i feel that a topic that needs a little bit more evaluation is the Field proc and the edit proc and how they can be applied on a table so that it facilitates the sorting of data according tothe user needs.

The Dead Sea Scrolls and Christian Origins (Studies in the Dead Sea Scrolls & Related Literature)

Do the scrolls mention Jesus?
The Dead Sea Scrolls are (for the most part) a collection of Hebrew and Aramaic writings from the centuries of the early occupation of Israel by the Romans. This coincides with a great time of change and diversity in Judaism, which included at that time at least three main sects (one might even go so far as to say, denominations): Saduccees, Pharisees, and Essenes. It also had within itself the seeds of two others: rabbinic Judaism and Christianity, both of which largely (and ironically) came out of the same strand: the Pharisees.

Joseph Fitzmyer (a Jesuit) has put together an interesting study in what is a major topic of interest to many scholars -- just what is the relation of these scrolls to Christianity? Because none of the scrolls as yet can be said to contain New Testament writings (those few fragments that might are very obscure, very ambiguous, and exceedingly small -- consisting of few words).

'This volume collects twelve studies on the Dead Sea Scrolls by Joseph Fitzmyer, including a new, never-before-published essay of Qumran messianism. A pioneer in the field of Scrolls research and well known for his work in Aramaic studies and in the Semitic background of the New Testament, Fitzmyer here explores particularly how the Scrolls have shed light on the Qumran community itself, on the interpretation of significant biblical themes, and on the rise of early Christianity.'

Fitzmyer has been working on the Scrolls since 1955; many of the essays in this book date originally to the early part of his career, but have been revised and updated to reflect the latest discoveries and interpretations in scroll research.

Prior to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, there was very little information on the nature of Palestinian Judaism of this period -- the writings of Josephus and Philo provided some information, but the explosion in knowledge really occurred with the scrolls. There are limits to the usefulness of Josephus and of Philo for interpretation; the scrolls offer another leg for the stand.

'Because the writings of Philo are cast in a philosophical mold and indulge in Alexandrian allegorical interpretation of the Old Testament, they are not so useful for historical information about Judean Judaism of for the understanding of early Christianity and the interpretation of the New Testament.'

Fitzmyer discusses the political situation in the 1940s and 50s that resulted in the domination of scroll research by Christian scholars who, untrained in rabbinic Judaism, originally interpreted the scrolls in primarily or exclusively Christian terms. He credits more recent scholars, including Rabbi Lawrence Schiffman, for reclaiming the Jewish nature of the scrolls, and showing their primary importance to understanding nascent rabbinic Judaism, and contemporary research now progresses with this firmly in mind.

Fitzmyer explores the ideas of John the Baptist as a member of the Essenes, of Jesus' Jewish affiliation (was he an Essene too? or a Pharisee?)

'Although the Qumran Scrolls provide information that may help to explain the background of John the Baptist but practically nothing about Jesus and his background or ministry, interpreters have nevertheless discovered many striking details in the Scrolls that shed light on the New Testament writings.'

Because a major section of the scrolls consist of exegesis and commentary on prophecies, and the Qumran community was very interested in messianism, the scrolls show a mindset that was not uncommon in Israel at the time. They address four key points:

(1) the Palestinian background of important Pauline teachings;
(2) christological titles used in the New Testament ('Son of Man', etc.)
(3) background and similarities to certain Gospel passages, and
(4) new light on Melchidezek, the shadowy priest/king from Genesis who resurfaces in the Epistle to the Hebrews.

This book is an important work for anyone wishing to explore in more detail the importance of the scrolls for Christian origins, without falling into the trap of making the scrolls an exclusively-Christian collection of documents.

A nice conclusion.
I thought this was a pretty good conclusion to Vampire Heart. It ended rather quickly, but that's to be expected in a two-book miniseries. And the end certainly proved the point that what goes around comes around. I would reccomend this book to teenagers who like vampire stories, but anyone older would probably find the story too tame.
