Another Murphy Classic
In this book Dr Murphy explains extrasensory perception and healing, premonitions, dream communication, clairaudience, precognition, astral travel, the law of abundance and how to eradicate negative predictions. Although the book is a joy to read and Dr Murphy is one of my favourite authors, I have to agree with a previous reviewer that there are too many testimonies and that more detailed, step-by-step exercises would have been better. Today there are so many books available on developing your psychic powers that the serious student should perhaps find it easier to start elsewhere (Ted Andrews for example). However, as a good overview on how to impress your subconscious mind to experience the good in life, this is still a valuable work. Just reading Dr Murphy's work has the effect of raising one's consciousness. I also recommend his great classic "The Power of your Subconscious Mind."

A great tool for learning the psychic skills.
In this book Dr. Murphy guides the reader to understand the nature of psychic skills. In my opinion, this book is very practical and teaches you to understand the nature of psychical world beyond your senses.

The style is very similar and comparable to his other books, and there are number of good examples and techniques enabling you to activate your psychical senses.

The reason I give this book only 4 stars is that Dr. Murphy could have included more instructions instead of having so many testimonies. After I had read the book, I felt like there could have been more practical exercises or something that could support a reader to train his psychic muscles.

If you are familiar with New Thought already, this book will do so much good for you. However, if this is your first Murphy book, then I suggest you to read some of his basic books such as "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind" or "The Amazing Laws of Cosmic Mind Power".

As you combine these three books together, you will get a powerful tol to create a life of your dreams.

I recommend this book for advanced students of truth and who are familiar with Murphy's other titles.

Well written, Mostly enjoyable but how true is it?
I enjoyed reading this book. It was well written. Two things about this book bothered me, however. One was the author's seemingly presumptious attitude that animals were definately psychic, instead of an investagative, scientific type attitude. The other, which bothered me much more, was that there was no bibliography. Nothing at all in this POSSIBLY well researched book was documented. Not only did this make you wonder if this strange phenomenon is true, but it makes it hard to investigate for myself things that interest me in the book. However, at least one of the "stories" in the book, about Jim the Wonder Dog, I know has been backed from other sources. Good read, but a little disapointing.

Psychic Pets
I believe that this book is more acceptional than what YOU think it is. I give it a 5-star rating because i feel that the book was written in an interesting form and, compared to others I have read, it seems to describe the whole scene of each story better, with more life. One of my family members read the book and suggested it to me, and now I have seen for myself that it is wonderfly written and there couldn't possibly be a mistake about any of the stories. The people who claim that the whole thing is a joke have other things comeing. I would not tolerate such goings on. All in all, I think the book should recieve top ratings. It truely showes class!

As Essential Companion to the Novel
It is interesting to note the evolution of Ernest Hemingway's reaction to "Tender is the Night". When the novel first appeared, Hemingway, while noting some fine passages, dismissed "Tender is the Night" as yet another example of F. Scott Fitzgerald's decline as both a writer and a person. However, as the years passed and Hemingway revisited the novel again and again, he came to regard it as Fitzgerald's best book.

Hemingway's reaction has always interested me. It was also a source of frustration as I tried without success to get through "Tender is the Night". At first I thought my abandonment of the novel was due to the introduction of too many characters too early in the book, but Bruccoli's very fine companion has made me re-evaluate this view. I think my earlier frustration was a direct result of my unfamiliarity with many of the places and people that Fitzgerald alludes to throughout the novel. Bruccoli gives succinct descriptions of people and places that may not be familiar to modern readers, but he also goes further. He points out logical inconsistencies, chronological errors, and outright mistakes that can distract (or confuse) the reader.

Is this effort worth it? Most definitely. Bruccoli's work pays off handsomely, helping to bring into focus a beautiful, intricate novel.

Just ask Papa.

Fitzgerald scholar explains the novel's numerous references
As the volume's introduction points out, this "is not a critical study: it does not analyze the putative meanings of Tender is the Night." Instead, Bruccoli's purpose is to briefly explore the novel's genesis, creation, publication, and aftermath. The main course of this feast, however, is a lengthy section of explanatory notes on Tender's numerous references. The text is additionally buttressed with photos and illustrations as well as a time scheme and chronology of events. Bruccoli's presentation is thorough without being pedantic, making this quite readable by scholars and students alike. One only hopes that someday this material will be shuffled with Fitzgerald's novel for a long-overdue annotated edition of this greatly underrated work.--Michael Rogers

A Good Bresson Primer but Spiritual Style?
Cunneen's "Robert Bresson: A Spiritual Style in Film" is a good survey of Bresson's filmography. The subheading, however, "A Spiritual Style in Film," is a bit of an an overpromise as Cunneen does not explain what encompasses his understanding of "style" and subordinates the discussion of the truly cinematic, stylistic considerations such as cinematography, editing, lighting in favor of the more literary bases of film such as plot construction and narrative. Moreover, Cunneen borrows heavily from existing work on Bresson and actually devotes more space to summarizing Bresson's body of work rather than the actual analysis of Bresson's unique stylistic signature. A title that reads something like "Bresson: An Introduction" might have been more realistic. Paul Schrader's "A Transcendental Style in Film" offers a more insightful analysis of Bresson's style that lives up to its title. Unlike Cunneen's book, it is, primarily, about cinematic style, not just content analysis.

The Definitive Brisson
"Robert Bresson: A Spiritual Style in Film" by Joseph Cunneen is a much-needed introduction to a master film director. Cunneen, long-time movie critic for the "National Catholic Reporter," approaches Bresson's career in a way that easily explains the director's distinctive approach to cinematography.

Bresson rejects the artificiality and dependence of "photographed theater" with it's reliance of star performers and instead emphasizes an austere, elliptical approach to narrative, making a masterful use of natural sound.
Cunneen explores all 13 films of Bresson in chronological order, clarifying the development of Bresson's technique while making clear that his "spiritual style" is why Susan Sontag called him "the master of the reflective model in film."
Easily understood by the novice as well as the movie buff, this book should send readers hunting down Bresson movies in the better video stores, and begging local universities to stage retrospectives of Bresson's entire oeuvre.

Good meditation tool.
I found the Scriptural Readings along with the music very productive in setting a meditative state of mind. The prayers were recited too fast, though. I found that distracting when you are trying to pray meaningfully.

An inspiration to daily devotions
The Rosary on CD is very convenient! The scriptural readings help to make the rosary more meaningful than just doing the prayers alone, and the background music is inspiring.

The format is very convenient. This allows one to do the appropriate Mystery each day. Also, it's easier to do the Rosary while driving when not holding the beads!

Close to perfect but no cigar
While this text is a valuable resource for students, veterinarians, and veterinary clinical pathologists, the wealth of information and quality is diminished by the numerous grammatical and typographical errors found throughout the text. Some errors can be overlooked; however, others can result in misinterpretation of laboratory findings by the novice. It would behoove the editors to spend more time on editing in future volumes.

Examples: p. 1231 Oct. vs. May RBC #, Hb, And Hct. values do not make sense.

p. 699, table 104.2 myelomonocytic leukemia, special stains, positive NSE with and without fluoride inhibition is incorrect

p. 955, The author states: "Interestingly, the diseases causing hemoglobinopathies and glucose-6-phopsphate dehydrogenase deficiencies common in human patients have not been documented in domestic animals." yet, on p.996, he lists a domestic animal! [Table 145.1 Defects: glucose-6-phopsphate dehydrogenase deficiency; Breed: Weimeraner]

Best Veterinary Hematology book/reference
TheFifth Edition of Schalm's Veterinary Hematology is a valuable tool to anyveterinarian, regardless of which point they are in in their career. For the novice veterinary student, thein-depth chapters provide the necessary information to easily learn newconcepts. The color photographs, illustrations, figures and charts drivehome the salient points. The casestudies put the topics into a clinical setting allowing the student to applythe information learned in clinical setting. The figures and tables provide the practicing veterinarian enoughinformation to jar a rusty memory. Thein-depth chapters also provide the seasoned veterinary with the necessaryinformation to stay abreast of the latest trends. The variety of species-specific hematologic information isunmatched by any other book that I have used in my short career. The topics are organized in a coherent andlogical manner. The index is quiteextensive and makes locating the needed information quite easy. I wish a resource like this had been available 2.5 years ago when I started veterinary school. It would have saved me alot of time having to look in multiple texts to find information that could all be found in one place.

Should provoke more discussion
Not as accessible as other books in the journalism reform genre (in other words, a little stat-heavy), but it provides a good framework for discussion. Anyone who thinks cynicism and journalism MUST go hand in hand should read this for a refutation and perhaps a few ideas of how to take the journalist's natural *skepticism* (which is very different) and use it a healthy manner.

Nice work but results not that overwhelming
A compilation of a number of experimental studies on the impact of the framing effects of news. The authors point out that political news nowadays uses mostly the strategic frame - focus on strategies of actors - rather than issue frame - focus on substantive aspects of the issues. And the authors try to test if the use of strategic frame would lead to enhanced cynicism.

The findings of the experiments are actually not very clear-cut, at least not clear-cut than what the authors said in the book. But the book contains very good discussions about the likely impact of news on cynicism, definition of cynicism vs. skepticism, the nature of framing effects etc.

The art in this book is offensive
The Native Americans in this book, with the lone exception of Massasoit, may have brown skin and wear traditional dress, but their facial features are totally *white* -- Squanto looks straight out of a JCrew catalog. Since when do Native Americans have turned up noses? Please. The art in this book isn't just "romanticized," it denies the physical bodies of Native Americans to the point at which it renders the accuracy of the text (and all it's good intentions) moot. Ugh. For much more interesting explorations of Native American history, I'd recommend This Land Is Your Land by George Littlechild.

Excellent Thanksgiving Story
This book is an excellent way of sharing the first Thanksgiving with children. It is told from the perspective of the Native Americans, a perspective that is often overlooked. The illustrations are beautiful and help to tell the story visually.

Bizarre yet charming
"Stalin's War" is a strange yet in the end charming book about the Soviet Union during WW2. This book is an easy read and there aren't any pesky notes to bog down the reader. Its kind of like if your crazy war-buff neighbor down the street told you his version of what Stalin was thinking during WW2. As the book goes on you can see the conflict between hero-worship and demonization coming to life in the pages. In the end I think this book is actually fairer than most current popular history because try as he might to avoid it the triumph and might of Stalin and the Red Army can't help but show through. Stalin bravely stayed in Moscow when the Germans were 30 miles away- we're reminded over and over. Stalin outfoxed the "naive" Americans and the conniving Churchill over and over again. We learn what the dead John Reed would have thought of Stalin from his crypt in the Kremlin wall. In the end this book can't help itself and the logic of Stalin's war is revealed- anyone who thinks that the Americans were going to enter Berlin first is delusional; does anyone really think we would have gone up against the Red Army with its blood up? Does anyone really think Stalin or any other Russian leader could have allowed a "free" eastern Europe after the impotence of Poland and the Czechs and the collaborationist hijinks of the Hungarians, Rumanians and Bulgarians? Thankfully in this whole book there is but one reference to R. Conquest the propagandist refering to Stalin's "dark and deadly" nature. In a way the nature of the Cold War and its beginnings are impressionistically sketched but the feel of those times seems to come through better than in many mainstream "histories" out there. Strange and maybe even true!

A profoundly informative and highly recommended history
Stalin's War: Tragedy And Triumph 1941-1945 by military historian and author Edwin P. Hoyt is a resolute examination of Communist dictator Josef Stalin's role in World War II, ranging from his ill-advised nonaggression pact with Hitler; to the deadly cost of the war itself; to the postwar creation of Communist puppet governments in Eastern Europe. An inset section of black-and-white photographs enhances this profoundly informative and highly recommended history of Stalin's influence in the World War II European Theatre and Post-War European political developments.
