Notice the liberal propaganda sprinkled throughout?
This book has such political propaganda inside! There are things in this book that have NOTHING to do with a legitimate course on communication, such as little mentions about the oppressed making themselves heard to their oppressors, and all of that left-liberal victim theory stuff. Also, there is a whole list of things to say versus what not to say that makes this text more suitable for a course in Orwellian Thought Control. And just what on Earth is heterosexist listening? Listening? The liberal campus texts are now moving from speech to what is inside your head? And then there are nosey and intrusive exercises that ask you to talk about personal mating habits and stuff related to intimate relationships. This is awful! Students who are required, as a mandatory part of any class that uses this politically motivated text, to answer some of the offensive and intrusive questions, should immediately contact the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) by finding their website.

A myriad of topics each discussed briefly
Excellent chapters covering morality, law, ethics, professional codes, and intellectual property rights. Provides a basic introduction to many topics that stimulate further study, research, and discussion. Discussion of social issues is limited. The weaker chapters are the modern areas of the information age such as cyberspace, the internet, email, privacy, security, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality.

I appreciate what the series is trying to do. . .
. . .but I believe that the Pentateuch has been given short shrift.

I completely understand the rationalization behind dividing Genesis into two volumes (1-11 and 12-50). What I cannot understand is the rationalization behind throwing the remaining four books into a single volume.

I realize that the very nature of parts of Exodus, Leviticus, parts of Numbers and parts of Deuteronomy would make a commentary of this type far more difficult -- but there is a great deal of narrative in those books as well, upon which the Fathers did, in fact, comment.

I got the impression that this volume was assembled perhaps too hastily. It just doesn't contain the wealth of information that is found in many of the other books.

I'll continue purchasing the series, of course -- but this volume does not represent the best of what "Ancient Christian Commentaries" has to offer.

fair
While the book does present an accurate and unbiased view of world religions, the text itself is less than gripping (the writing is dry), and the book's organization is a little confusing. This may not be the best text to use if you are interested in getting a clear, overall picutre of a particular religion. It includes studies of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

The Fellowship of Life: Virtue Ethics and Orthodox Christianity

Sounds Great, But Can the Lady Sing?
This is an excellent scholarly review of Orthodox Christianity. But is Orthodoxy willing to practice what she preaches? The philosophy of Orthodoxy is steeped tradition and on a solid foundation. Do not fall in love with the ideaLs and philosophies presented here in this book and expect the same from the actual churches as they are very patriarical and not all churches are the bastion of ethics and Christian love that they might aspire to be. Judge each church not on what you have read Orthodoxy to be as presented in this or any other book, but on a congregation-by-clergy basis. This book covers what the RELIGION is built on, not the individual parishes.

The Tapes Are For Anyone Out to Retire Comfortably
Young MBA students who will be the future executives of tomorrow will find this tape helpful with its advice on financial planning. In fact, anyone who stands to make money will find that it's never too early to start saving.

The content is relatively easy to understand. And while there is not a whole lot of detailed information, it is a starting point. Other useful sources are cited throughout the seminar. The tapes are not cleanly edited, but they are perfect for listening in the car on the way to school or work.

Gates of Light/Sha'Are Orah
Translated in shockingly exoteric and readable fasion Gikatillia's "Shaareh Orah" uncovers the key's to the ten spheres. The book takes each of the ten and explicitly explains the name that it is attached to, and the cognomens that are used in reference to that sphere in the Tanakh. The book is eclipsed historicaly in importance by the Book of Splendor (Zohar), but it should not be overlooked. Indeed while the Zohar is hidden and recondite Gikatillia sets much of the same subject matter forth in clear 13th century philosophical style. A most important English translation of a classic Kabbalistic text.

A useful-enough text
This book deals with issues that occured before the gays-in-the-military debate was in full swing in 1993. Thus, it feels a little dated. Further, it's a collection of documents that fueled the debate, rather than an analysis or an autobiography from one of the expelled gay soldiers. Still, when I was writing my senior college thesis, this book was useful to me. Its best item is an affidavit submitted by the late gay scholar John Boswell. There are better books on the topic, but this one wasn't bad.
