Our Italian Surnames

Not Every Name, But Close.
Even though you might not find your surname listed, you will be able to find the "root" name yours derived from. I found it extremely interesting how some of our Italian name got their start. Also how some names are very specific to one certain area. A must for Italian genealogy.

Exceptionally well organized thoughts and ideas on cosmology
This book presents a well organized and deeply thought out approach at describing and explaining cosmology and human consciousness within the cosmological context. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in a non-religious explanation of "what's it all about".

Unplayable Lies
Of all the books I have read on golf this one stands out. Joseph T Shaw captures the obsessive dimension of golf brilliantly, relegating 'instruction' to a secondary position. The narrative takes us to Scotland, to windswept coastal links, a crusty old professional and, of course, a lovely young woman who can hit it a mile with barely a movement of her lithe body. The jokes are well done and the description of an infamous golf match in Musselburgh is brilliant. Amidst all the human drama reside several classic pieces of golf instruction, beautifully written and guaranteed to inspire. This is a book for the ages, an important historical record and a first rate piece of instruction on how to swing a golf club. If you are obsessed with golf, this book has been written for you.

Outlandish: Writing Between Exile and Diaspora

INVENTIVE, SOULFUL, COMPULSIVELY READABLE
Of course Outlandish is rigorous and meticulously researched. But it's much more than that. Israel brings energy and even passion - "even" passion? I mean *especially* passion - to his scholarly subject, and the result is an academic page-turner that must now be considered the definitive treatment of the literature of exile. Invest in this book as you would invest in a suitcase out of which you might one day have to live.

A very informative book.
This book provides portions (usually a chapter) from the writings of martial artists. Some of the authors are founders of systems, such as Jigoro Kano and Gichin Funakoshi. I found many of the writings to be very insightful and they seemed to have more depth than many of the martial arts writings that you see today.

Overtime is a hit
This book opened my eyes to the secret life of men. Camille Paglia, Philip Levine, Richard Hugo and Larry Levis would love this book. If you've ever worked, raised a child, been married or divorced, had a desperate love affair, drank too much, tried too hard, missed your father or read Keats out loud to the salt marches, this is the book for you. A great accomplishment by a wonderful new poet.

Essential for all Political Science students
This is the bible, for lack of a better term, of political science.

I may be biased as several of the articles/definitions are contributions of my past professors, but the consistency of the writing doesn't hint that it is a compilation from many different experts.

In most cases, the contributing authors are the foremost authorities in their respective fields. That is apparent in the quality of this world-class publication.

New Fans and Old Hands Will Both Take To This PGW Intro
Those new to PGW can find the going tough; you literally can't see the forest for the trees (well not literally). This brief (159 page)oversize intro in the Thames and Hudson Literary Lives series is drenched in beautiful b&w illustrations and peppered with lively prose. The best part, though, is the brief bibliography, which enables one to wade through the various editions and cross reference English and American titles, so you don't buy the same book under two different names. Rather than bog down his biography, Connolly has kept just the good bits in this once over lightly tour of PGW's life and letters, which surely numbers among the best of the books on PGW.

A Master of Photography
Joseph McKenzie has been called the Father of Scottish Photography and he's all of that - a living legend!
This book came to my notice by chance and is now one of my treasured texts. There are other brilliant books by Mr. McKenzie that are not listed here, but can be obtained from the author. Gorbals Children a study in Photographs (ISBN0-86267-269-4 Richard Drew Publishing Ltd) is such another.
For anyone interested in photography, and especially Black and White Photography, these are inspirational works of art. Joseph McKenzie is a master behind the lens and an alchemist in the darkroom. His subject matter is a record of the 20th Century.
With photographs in the Victoria & Albert Museum, in the National Portrait Gallery of Scotland, In Dundee City archives and with the Carnegie Trust, why is it we fail to recognise genius in the flesh, and recognise it only when they have passed to dust? Anyone, who considers himself or herself a photographer without these classics - just isn't.
