This is a book to be studied, not read.
In hopes of saying everything Dr. Reeves has made this book a tedious read. However, if one is looking for all there posibly is to know on the subject its in there. In short this is a book to be studied, not read.

The ruthless pursuit of an objective at any cost.
Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower (a democrat and republican president respectively) both hated McCarthy more than any other person in the world. According to their respective biographers (D. McCullough and S. Ambrose), Truman hated only three men during his lifetime: Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and McCarthy. On the other hand, Eisenhower hated only two men during his lifetime: Adolf Hitler and McCarthy.

After reading these two biographies, I wanted to get a glimpse at McCarthy's "side" and thus bought this book. The surprise is that even after reading "his" side you don't feel any better for the man. It is difficult to find any other person in the 20th century history of the USA that created so much division, generated so much hatred, ruined so many lives and careers, diverted so much attention from the real issues and thus ironically, at the end of the day probably helped more the cause of communism than even Stalin. "Were the junior senator from Wisconsin in the pay of the Communists, he could not have done a better job for them."

The terror he created in the USA was comparable to that of any dictator (even Eisenhower was afraid of him and did his best to prevent an open confrontation: "I won't get into a pissing contest with that skunk"). "It seemed that the Eisenhower administration would never summon the courage to stand up to the powerful Wisconsin senator".

In the middle of this fear, unwillingness to take action and even cowardice, there was at least one extremely brave man that committed himself to defeating McCarthy: Senator William Benton. He confided to a magazine editor that many of the professional politicians "think I am making a mistake in terms of my own political future; but I can only reply that I would rather be right than be a senator." If only Eisenhower had had half the guts of Benton history would have been much different, for the better.

The other person well worth mentioning is Jean Fraser Kerr, McCarthy's wife. She seems to have been an exceptional woman: very intelligent (more so than McCarthy), completely loyal to her husband, very hard working, etc. Her "first love" was politics and she contributed greatly to McCarthys career (first as his assistant and then as his wife).

Something that came as a surprise to me was that McCarthy was a very good friend of the Kennedy's and he even hired Robert Kennedy to his staff. What is more, Joseph Kennedy (JFK father) contributed thousands of dollars to McCarthy's political career. "After Wheeling, Joseph P. Kennedy was to become one of McCarthy's most loyal defenders and financial supporters, and the senator would give Bobby Kennedy his first job."

All the destruction, hatred, and enemies he created were finally too much and his political career was finally destroyed. On the personal level he had a wonderful wife and a new baby daughter (Tierney) but he technically committed suicide because his life was politics and here he had lost it all. (His doctor had told him "one more glass of alcohol and you die." He kept drinking heavily).

His epitaph should probably have been: "Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?"

A Masterful Portrait
Despite the "review" claiming this book is tedious, it is actually a quick read for more than 800 pages. It may be the only thorough and truly fair account of McCarthy's life. Not among the band of writers who do nothing but demonize McCarthy, Reeves looks deeper, at the other sides of the senator, and presents an insightful portrait. No one will finish this book loving Joe McCarthy, but they will certainly understand him and the times that helped create him. This is an excellent scholarly book that is also easy to read. I highly recommend it.

A piece of American Naturalism
Garland is an expert at capturing local color. This collection of short stories shows the brutal reality of farm and rural life in the Midwest. His characters are thrown around in the cruel world and have no real way of escaping. His women characters are strong and hold their own in world dominated by hard working men. This book shows how it was like to live in the West one hundred years ago.

A piece of American Naturalism
Garland captures the American West as it was at the end of the 19th Century. This collection of shorts stories is a slice of life in rural America. Garland is a true local colorist who portrays real, hard working farmers and the struggle to survive in the harsh landscape of the Midwest. Who is a true Naturalist who shows the brutal reality of American life and the lack of control people had on the conditions of their lives. These stories take you into the hardships of the countryfolk of one hundred years ago.

The best of American Realism. Short stories full of heart.
Hamlin captures the essence of American Realism. The vividly painted scenes full of grit and labor keep this book moving. The characters are solid and provide the reader with a painfully honest view of life and love at the turn of the century. A necessary book for any decent collection of American Realism. Escape into the main traveled roads of humanity!

Good, not great, Brandstetter
The fourth entry in Hansen's Brandstetter series finds Dave investigating the murder of a small town sheriff,Ben Orton, hated by many and feared by all. On the face of it, it appears rabid gay activist Cliff Kurlee is responsible for Orton's death, but Brandstetter's continuing probe leads him to other ideas.

This isn't as compelling as the four previous books in the series, but compared to the competition in the gay mystery field, it is pure champagne. All the trademarks are there: scalpel-sharp characterization and dialogue, perfect renderings of place and atmosphere, and Dave Brandstetter himself, of course, a solid character by any standard of detective fiction. This book also introduces Dave's new love interest, Cecil Harris, a young black student and TV newsworker who helps Dave crack the case.

I Shot The Sheriff
Once described by the Los Angeles Times as "the most exciting and effective writer of the classic California private-eye novel working today," Joseph Hansen writes smart, smooth PI novels in the hard-boiled tradition--with one difference. Insurance investigator David Brandstetter is homosexual. Not so amazing these days, but something of a shocker in the 1970's when the first Brandstetter novel appeared. In book four of the critically aclaimed series, Brandstetter is investigating the murder of Police Chief Ben Orton, a man who seemed to hate everybody, and whom everybody seemed to hate. Gay activist Cliff Kerlee has been arrested, but Brandstetter isn't so sure, and if he can't be convinced, he may have to be killed...

Lively and exciting read.
Brandstetter, a gay middle-aged insurance investigator, doesn't believe a gay activist in Southern California killed a "red-neck" sheriff. Turning over stones, he tracks down the real murderer.

Leaves much to be desired
This book is used at my college and it is really soft on hard information. It is full of generalizations and impressive industry jargon but offers little practical information to take into industry. The cost does not justify what you get in my opinion. More case examples would be helpful and more analytical methods described with realistic scenarios could really improve it. I would not recommend it unless absolutely necessary.

This book has been dramatically improved in the 7th edition
The book takes the reader progressively from the most simple concepts to the complexities of logistics. It is true that this is not a quantitive book, but it is a very conceptual and didactic logistics book with many cases and graphs. An internet site provided by the publisher with transparencies, internet site references, and other supports to this book makes it an excellent tool. There is a lot of value in the package offered.

Value for Money
I have used this book as a reference whilst as a student and recommended it as a lecturer. The material it contains is explained in detail and most if not all major areas of Logistics and Supply Chain Management have been covered to some extent.

Topics like ECR that are today considered "new" or "cutting edge" were mentioned in this book.

It does not gloss over theories and calculations but actually walks you through these step-by-step.

I have read and used a number of Logistics or SCM books over the years. If you take all factors into account, including price, which is relevant to most students, you get absolute value for money.

Easy to read, good overview of test topics
This book is easy to read all of the way through, but does not have a lot of the detailed very specific information you would need to pass the test. I also used the Readiness Review by Perkovich for test practice and the Resource Kit for the technical details. I would not have passed the test with this book only, but it is good for the general concepts.

Well written, nice layout!
The new design of the New Rider study guides look great! The information presented is accurate (caught a few errors, but nothing major) and easy to understand. Comes with a sample test on CD which could have been better! I passed the 70-098 test on the first try with this book and the transender exam. Good study tool but you need some 98 experience if you hope to pass the test!!! Overall, a good book worth the money!!

This is one book that makes taking the exam easier.
First there was Windows 95 and then Windows 98, as the same time there was new exams, now the Next Generation Training makes the passing of the exam easier and more fun. Casad & Phillips have put together a book that is one of the best I've seen on Windows 98.

What you get is Study Strategies for those who have a hard time planning the way to study, also you get step by step exercises that show you what to do. Case studies that will bring things into a "real World" understanding and the hand-on exercises to help make learning easier.

The author's also give you questions and reviews to track your progress, practice exam to get you ready and those last minute fast facts. The book covers each objective of the exam and the authors make sure that the book is easy to understand yet detailed enough.

Included is Top Score Software on a cd-rom. The cd gives you a simulator, exams, study cards, flash cards and best of all you can customize your way for better learning. There is nothing lacking with this book or software. Well Done New Riders!

Not Recommended for exam preparation
The sample questions at the end of chapters and the exam prep questions on CD are NOTHING like the actual exams. They provide no help. I found numerous factual errors in these books. Many questions on the real exam could not be answered even using the book as a reference. Do not count on these books as your primary study guide or source of information.

Excellent study guides
These books are very well written, making them easy to read and understand. The content layout is well layed out with reference to the exam objectives, making it easy to see exactly what is required for the exam. The content I found to be sufficient for the exam but they do have minor bits of information missing. The practice exams usually identified these bits of information to me, so overall I consider the content to be adequate. The practice exams were a valuable aid in preparation for the exam, and were not too far away from what the real exam is like. These books are far better than the Sybex books that I used for the elective exams (they too have information missing). The Sybex books were difficult to understand and each exam objective was not clearly explained.

Very good resource
This book covers all aspects of the NT side of the MCSE quite well. It is written in a clear style and comes with lots of labs and exercises.

Words about one of the greatest composers
this short collection of quotes helped me learn a lot about mozart and opinion of him, but there weren't too many memorable lines. still, if you are a fan of mozart's this is an interesting collection.

Very nice little book.
Very nice to read about some famous people's opinions of Mozart. Especially interesting are the opinions of people closer to his time. Some of the reading was full of hot air and a little boring. "Too many words" to describe how they felt about Mozart. A nice book to have in your Mozart collection, if you can get it for just a few bucks. Four stars for the older recollections in the book.

If you like Mozart, you'll love this.
Short, pithy, collected quotes from a wide variety of writers, thinkers, and even musicians on Mozart. Easy to read, useful for collecting impressions from a wide range of authors. As an amatuer musician, I know it is true--Mozart is too easy for beginners, too hard for professionals. Should inspire casual readers to seek out other works on his life.

I had to return this book
I was NOT what I expected it to be at all. I thought the fact that it was discussing Indian art and symbols, there would acctually be a goodly amount of Indian art in this book. I realized I was mistaken upon leafing through this book and finding pages and pages of text with only a few examples of the art it related to. I'm not trying to disparrage the book in this review, I did not read it, but I'm sure it was good for what it was. I'm just trying to keep someone else from making the same mistake I made.

An interesting and through, but mostly scholarly read
Zimmer is without a doubt a brilliant and sophisticated scholar of Indian Art and Mythology and this text reflects that fact very well. The sheer density of the text lends to the quality of it as a resource, but it not the number one choice of texts for someone who is just interested in mythology and folklore. Zimmer does more than merely tell you the myth or legend, he offers incredible symbolic and literary analysis of the myth in terms of broader and universal symbols. He brings together history, art, myth, religion, and philosophy in a incredible combination. However, the text is extraordinarily difficult to follow as a casual read.

In many places the text simply jumps around without any transition and in a seemingly nonsensical manner, making it difficult to read in a linear fashion. There does not seem to be any real organization to the text, with bits and pieces of the text's various elements thrown into the book at what feels like haphazard points. The photographs of the art which Zimmer discusses is useful, but are hidden at the back of the book in small, hard to see, grainy, black and white photos. I found to be a real pain constantly to flip to the back of the book to see what he was talking about and having to squint to make out the intricate art in the poor quality pictures. It would more useful if the photos were on the page where they were discussed, were in color, and were bigger. One final quibble is that the sheer volume of information makes taking notes as you go along crucial to obtain a real understanding of the text.

While I think these points are valid, do not let them scare you away. The text possess an immense wealth of information about Indian mythology and incredible analysis of its stories. An strong reference and research for students and scholars or for anyone who has a real interest in mythology, myth-art/religious art, or the psychological universality of myths. To any of these people I would highly recommend this book. If you are just starting on these or any other field that might be pertaining to the book, you might wish to start with some primary sources or books that are strictly myths and legends (i.e. the Mahabhrata or the Bhagavad Gita)or books on mythic/religious art before trying this book.

One of the essential texts on the symbolism of Hinduism.
Edited by the late Joseph Campbell, Zimmer's book is a detailed analysis and explanation of the significance and history of many of the symbols found in Indian art and religon. It has a good index and several photographs at the end which provide essential examples.

Liberal bias wrapped in a pseudo-cloak of objectiveness
While the author tried to maintain an air of fairness and objectiveness regarding the many controversial issues surrounding border enforcement, a subtle, liberal bias tainted his entire presentation. The conclusions were already made before the words were written; it is obvious that supportive facts were selectively picked.

This book has less original thoughts than you might think. The author looked at the "medium" picture and told us it was the "big" picture. Either he doesn't know the difference or is trying to promote his social agenda.

In our new era of concern over national security, this argument doesn't fly.

Don't waste your money on this one!

An eye-opening book ..... informative and thorough.
This book provides an excellent overview on the history of the US-Mexican border, and immigration laws that have been instituted over the years. The author is able to see through the propaganda the US government uses to perpetuate their "rationale" for the continued security buildup with regards to the border. Anyone with an interest in history and/or immigration should read this book, and become enlightened!

A very thorough and highly thought provoking book
This book changed the way I think about the U.S.-Mexico border, undocumented immigrants, and border control. It provides a thorough and fascinating history of the development of the border, and practices and identities related to it. The perpespective of the author is certainly unique and provocative. He puts forth ideas and analysis that one rarely if ever hears or reads. I highly recommend it.

Picnic Table Time Machine In a New Castle Garage
... Most of us, having reached seventy plus find it easy to remember details half a century earlier even when we can't remember where we put our glasses five minutes ago... so it was with Joseph DeVivo when he sat down at a picnic table in the garage of his New Castle, Pennsylvania home to remember his youth for grandson Curt Meine,, In great and vivid detail he described his life as a little Italian mountain boy, up to and including the touching farewell to his village as he headed for Naples and a ship to America...this narrative is simple and straightforward and the reader gets a feel for what life was like for this little boy so very long ago.. De Vivo died in 1993 at the age of 90.. You sense the joy of the interviewer for taking the time to sit and listen and record the memories of his grandfather..after finishing this very small book, the reader wishes, too, he had taken the time to listen and record memories of his elders.

Peppino
From the beautifully designed cover, to the many stories of wonder, adventure, and hardship, "Peppino" takes you into the intimate theatre of Joseph Devivo's memory. Before you've reached the end, you've grown protectively close to 'lilla' Peppino. And, the nostalgic scenes from his boyhood in rural Italy and industrial America have filled your heart.

I think it's a great gift book and a great quick read. The only problem is that you'll find yourself wanting more.

It has inspired me to record the stories of my own grandparents.

Beautiful in content and appearance
This book is a treasure. Congratulations to Curt Meine for his decision as a young student to interview his grandfather for an oral history project and then to put Peppino's endearing stories together in this beautifully illustrated and handsomely produced slim volume. I am a native of New Castle, Pa., and even though I
haven't lived there for years, I make periodic visits to relatives and still know the DeVivo family, so a reader might assume my comments are biased. But I believe Peppino surely has popular appeal, and anyone reading it will love it as I did.
