Good reference book for SmartSuite
This is a great place to start if you didn't get much out of the reference manual or don't have it. The book is easy to read and understand, but it's a bit dry. The author begins with the very basics, such as how to open/save a file and then closes it with chapters on Lotus ScreenCam and using Lotus for html. It's thorough and I think anyone will be a Lotus expert after reading it.

Portraiture: Vincent van Gogh's great love
From 2000-2001 this exhibition, devoted specifically to Van Gogh's portraits and self-portraits, will travel to Detroit, Boston and Philadelphia. This book is well written and provides graphics of superb quality. My only misgiving comes from the fact that seven different writers contributed to the commentary of the book which makes the flow of the text somewhat disjointed. While very well researched, other exhibition catalogues (those by Ronald Pickvance, for example) take a work-by work, single author approach and, as a result, the commentary is more clear and concise. Still, it's a minor criticism of an excellent book.

Keep this book handy
Anyone who uses vitamins or herbal suppliments would do well to read this book and also keep it somewhere easily accessible.

This book gives the low down on vitamins, offering advice on usage, along with dispelling myths about certain vitamins. It is written for the layman, but anyone in the health or medical field would still find this book very useful. Keep it next to your thesaurus.

A Voice for the Child: The Inspirational Words of Janusz Korczak

The inspirational views of a great 20th century pedagogue
The editor of this beautiful book, Ms Sandra Joseph, has put together various of Janusz Korczak's texts, from a number of books, such as 'How to Love a Child' and 'The Child's Right to Respect'. Janusz Korczak (1878-1942) was a Polish-Jewish doctor, playwright and pedagogue, who was deeply involved with the education of orphans in Warsaw, Poland. He became famous for his radical views on the right of the child to be respected and treated in a humane way. As an 'advocate of the child' he claimed, long before the 'official' rights of the child were established by the UN, fundamental rights for children and youngsters. His life, and that of the orphans, ended when in 1942 the Nazis put them on transport to Treblinka. Since the 70s his ideas and views are studied around the world. For a number of reasons, this book is very welcome. In the first place it contributes to the reception of Korczak in the English-speaking world. In the past years only few works on Korczak were published in English; the Lifton biography 'The King of Children' being best known. In the second place, this book presents in a nutshell both Korczak's life and general ideas and a generous selection from his texts. Now we have at last a source that can be used when one wants to refer to Korczak in English. In the third place this little book is published in association with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in the United Kingdom, to which the author donates part of her royalties; so Korczak's ideas are clearly linked to a very topical and pressing problem, that of the cruelty to and maltreatment of children. Ms Joseph ends her introduction by saying the following: 'Korczak deserves to be recognized and honoured today, not because he was a martyr, not because he was a great writer and doctor, not because he cared for the most neglected and poorest of children, not because he made a unique contribution to the world of education -but because he was a man of great humility, who lived and died solely because of his deep belief in and love for children. Korczak truly was 'The Champion of the Child'' (p. xxii-xxiii). I do hope that this little book will find its way, especially in the English speaking countries. Those already familiar with Korczak will find new inspiration; those new to him will find a source of wonder and challenge.

Wonderful review of Chicago planning
Well-written and good content. I learned a lot, and hope to visit Chicago soon to see for myself just how Chicago has evolved. A map would've been helpful. I look forward to more works from this author.

Waterfowl Tomorrow
Outdoorsmen, hunters, naturalists, and citizens at large will find this unique book about migratory waterfowl on the North American Continent interesting, attractive, informative and challenging. In easy to read language it answers such questions as -- Do Eskimos take large numbers of ducks and geese for food? Are the nesting places of waterfowl in serious jeopardy? Where does the Canada goose nest? Why do people hunt waterfowl? The story is well-illustrated with more than 150 outstanding photographs of waterfowl appearing in print for the first time. It contains dozens of excellent waterfowl drawings by the well-known wildlife artist--Bob Hines.

Edited papers on wavelets and applications in chemical engg.
The authors of the 8 chapters in this book provide an excellent overview of wavelets, wavelet transforms, and their applications in chemical engineering. The first two chapters deal with wavelets, wavelet transforms, and an easy-to-read tutorial on computing wavelet transforms and constructing wavelets. Chapters 3 and 4 discuss applications in trend analysis and feature extraction. The authors of Chapter 4 present applications of wavelets to the field of process and sensor data fingerprinting. Chapter 5 describes how wavelets can be used along with neural networks to extract information from process data via induction. Chapter 6 presents a wavelet domain formulation and solution of model predictive control. Chapter 7 addresses numerical solution of differential equations, solutions for which exhibit abrupt changes, using orthogonal and semi-orthogonal wavelets. Several numerical examples are given. The last chapters discusses implentation of two-dimensional wavelet packet transform and its application to analyze two-dimensional turbulent flow fields. The book is valuable as a reference source and should prove useful to introduce researchers to the exciting facets of wavelets.

Reprint of Principles of NLP, 1996
I was misled by the new title and publishing date and enthusiastically ordered multiple copies. But it was disappointing to discover that it is only a reprint. Please cf. my review of Principles of NLP two years ago. It is still a very good and lucid introduction to NLP, a complement to the author's Introduction to NLP, which did not include the Presuppositions.
(The book has 190 pages, not 224.)

Insight Into History
This book is a list of primary sources on the major events of European History from the Renaissance to the present. Weber does a good job of presenting balanced viewpoints (except maybe in the case of evolution, where he's definitely pro) The works are a bit dry, but that's not his fault. Plus, he gives a quick summary of each author before presenting his work. Perfect for AP classes (as practice for DBQs)

What Am I?: Descartes and the Mind-Body Problem
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (February, 2002)
Author: Joseph Almog
Amazon base price: $27.50
Average review score:

Descartes Ala Kripke
A dandy little book. Not quite for the uninitiated, which is why it is valuable. Skip Descartes and read Kripke's Naming and Necessity, Burge, as well as Themes from Kaplan. Then pick up Almog's latest book.

It seems like Almog could be right about one thing (certainly): the so-called mind-body problem assumes no fundamental question.

Almog does a nice job with the 'real distinction,' esp. in his discussion on conceivability in 1.3.

Interesting (and successful) juxtaposition: Descartes, Arnauld, and Kripke (1.6).

This book is easy to follow (some nice logic) and is clear in the typical Dodd Hall style (as opposed to some of his lectures).
