Amphibians and Reptiles in Kansas

I bought 5 copies
This is definitely the herpetological bible for anyone interested in reptiles and amphibs in kansas. I recommend it to anyone. I gave it as christmas gifts to people that are always telling tall tales of snakes and giant snappers they see. As far as the current common and scientific names go, hey its science, which is constantly changing and Joseph T. Collins is at the forefront of wildlife research in kansas. It truly is a shame he cant print a new book every year, but unless youre audobon, who really can.

Good but could be better
Generally good pictures and up-to-date information, but writing is stilted and uninteresting.Book claims to use currently acceptable standardized names, but there is still much debate about such names. In fact, a new list of standardized names will soon be published that will make obsolete a number of names used in this book.

What a book!
The bible for any budding herpetolgist in the sunflower state, and the model for all subsequent state field guides. Absolutely amazing professional color photography, detailed range maps, and text written eloquently, for both the layman and the expert alike. Common names follow Collin's list which are also used by the Eastern and Central Peterson Field Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles (the most widely read and used reference on herpetology in the world)as well as the Center for North American Herpetology. Can't wait for the next edition!

Stop Killing Trees
Imagine how many trees had to perish so that 400 pages of paper could be created to produce this work of utter uselessness. How many human beings really need to know about the artwork, in relation to politics, of the Han dynasty of BC China? Answer: Zero. No one on Earth (including China) needs this information for any cause, and it is truly sad that while millions of people in Asia are starving, Western scholars would waste their time and effort on such rancid minutia.

An Eloquent Scholarly Study
This is a beautiful look at one of the most fascinating periods of early recorded history.

The author, unlike many art historians, brings the reader to a real feeling for the works' affective impact on viewers then and now, and writes so beautifully that the subject matter becomes secondary to his overall sensitivity to art and human endeavor.

An original and eloquent book. In 1991 this book was named the best book in pre-twentieth century Chinese Studies by the Association of Asian Studies (AAS) in the United States and was awarded the body's Levenson Prize. Any reader, even a non-specialist, can enjoy it, however. If you cannot read the whole book, read a chapter... or a paragraph; or a short selection. The writing shines with sensitivity and a beautiful clarity of thought and expression.

The author's next published work, Pattern and Person, is forthcoming, and I greatly look forward to adding it to my collection of this scholar's writings.

A crucial work
This is a crucial work of scholarship on early Chinese art. It overturns prior emphases in art historical methodology to examine issues of style and ornament. Powers is a very careful scholar, and his work will be regarded as seminal.

Easy reading, inaccurate advice
Positive reviews made me consider this book as a course book. I bought a copy and scrutinized it. The easy language gives nice insights in scientific reasoning and approches to problems. But when it comes to practical advise on instrumentation, statistics, and error estimation too many incorrect formulas or misunderstandings have crept into the examples. Therefore I don't recommend this book for practical work, unless the reader have an experienced and knowledgeable person within reach to consult.

An excellent overview of experimentation but needs revisions
This is an outstanding book covering the process of scientific thinking and experimentation in practical terms - ideal for senior high school or freshmen college students. I am using this as a text for a Gr. 12 course in Experimental Physics in 1999.

The only criticism is that it needs some revision - there is reference to LORAN-C instead of GPS in one example, the code examples at the back are written in DOS BASIC and are things that can be done in any modern spreadsheet or on a good calculator. The content though is still very current - the section on digital data aquisition is especially good covering signal aliasing and resolution in clear and concise terms.

Highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn the important things they should have been taught in high school science, but weren't!

Excellent general text for teaching the process of research
Mr. Carr has a clear grasp of what is involved in the process of scientific research. He walks readers through the "hows" and "whys" of good science, and has extensive mathematical bases for his suggestions on analyzing data. He includes common pitfalls in thinking and logic that lead to poor science, which is just as useful as comments on the "right" ways to think. Additional references he provides are also useful for more detail in the areas of critical thinking and statistics.

Readable and do-able science is what he offers to high school and university students who need a crash course on basic research. I will be using this book as the main textbook for a pilot course on Scientific Research and Design for high school students in the fall of 1999.

The Assault on Medical Freedom

Libel warning
The review of this book by Manfred Mueller libels me. Please remove it. He states that the book "exposes the dirty work of quackbusters Stephen Barrett, John Renner, Williams Jarvis etc., and their corporate backers in detail." In fact, the book is a pack of lies. We sued Lisa and the publisher. The settlement agreement states that if the book is republished, about 20 passages may not be reprinted. The rest of the settlement terms are covered by a nondisclosure agreement.

Exposing the Anti-quackery Scam
If Joe Lisa's book is out of print you can bet that the Pharmaceutical Advertising Council or the AMA bought every last copy of it to take it out of circulation. His previous treatise "The Great Medical Monopoly Wars" is also out of print presumably for the same reasons. Lisa documents the fraud and corruption behind the anti-quackery campaign conducted and financed by the phamaceutical industry to eliminate alternative medicine. Lisa proves that officials in the FDA, IRS, FTC, the United States Post Office and the Better Business Bureau and the Media conspire with PAC and its lackeys to discredit practitioners and treatments that do not use synthetic drugs. He exposes the dirty work of quackbusters Stephen Barrett, John Renner, Williams Jarvis etc., and their corporate backers in detail, and concludes that, although the tactics have changed, this hundred year old witch hunt is not about to end. This book is a rare and bold piece if investigatie journalism that ranks among the best in a series of related works such as Martin Walker's "Dirty Medicine" and Guillaine Lanctot's "Medical Mafia". Lisa is an investigative reporter, private eye, undercover operative and civil right activist, whose previous published work includes scathing reports on government mind-control experiments, illegal biological and chemical experiments on U.S. citizens, and other infringements on the constitutional rights of American citizens.

Dial MD For Murder
Whew, I've been studying alternative medicine for close to 25 years and am so encouraged by this expose of the AMA and its arrogant power and corruption as it continues to this day to try to stifle any competition that is NOT for MD's only and their chemical drug dependency. A scholarly work about a demonstrable conspiracy. This book is so fine I'm not surprised that it is out of print. It reminds me of G. Edward Griffins' book "World Without Cancer" which went to about two dozen editions back in the 1970's and you can't find it anywhere today. Too much truth in it. I was lucky to stumble across this one at a Goodwill store.

If you have any doubts about the truth in this book go to the House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform, on the net, and look up March 10, 1999 "EDTA-Chelation: Is the Government doing more harm than good?". Now, obviously not all MD's are bad, but after reading this book, the testimony on the Hill, and checking out www.arcx.com, see if you can really trust your MD again completely.

Somebody please hire me (reasonable) to write a condensed version of this book (wordiness is its only flaw) and let's support freedom of medical choice.

Footnote: The Journal of the American Medical Association admits that prescribed drugs given CORRECTLY are the 4th leading cause of death in this country. Yet the State Medical Board in Maryland ordered my wife's physician to stop ANY alternative medicine for THREE YEARS. Yes, he was chelating, his patients love him, and, you should know, in New Zealand it is ILLEGAL to bypass or do an angioplasty without trying chelation first.

P. Joseph Lisa does a great job explaining why we are being duped by the so-called anti-quackery or anti-health fraud cliques in this country. Write your congressman and mention the RICO laws in this regard. Sign me:

Fascinating story, Questionable translation
A surreal dream journey combining religious and scientific imagery; this version includes some good B&W illustrations. However, for various reasons I am seeking out an alternate translation after buying this book. My first encounter with NIGHT ON THE GALACTIC RAILROAD (GINGA (Galaxy) TETSUDO (Railroad) NO YORU (Night)... the "Night" somehow dropped out of the title in this version) was with the gorgeous animated film, towards which my expectations are admittedly biased. Also, I don't read Japanese, so my comments on the translation must be taken with a grain of salt. However, one error stands out -- changing the character's Italian names to arbitrary Japanese equivalents. Did the translators really expect readers to be somehow confused by the fact that a Japanese author was writing about Italian characters, however universal or archetypal such characters are supposed to be? It's not a gripe that would destroy the story for a first-time reader, but for me, it leaves a negative impression.

BEYOND OUTER SPACE TO INNER SPACE
This is the best of several available English translations of Japan's bestloved children's sci fi fantasy story. Although it takes the controversial step of simplifying the title and changing the characters' names to Japanese instead of the original Italian, it removes one layer of mystification from the story and simplifies our perceptions of a multifaceted work that appeals as easily to adults as to children. This tale of the friendship between a poor boy and a rich boy in a small country town in northern Japan and their journey to the heavens, from which only one returns, shows a small boy contending with social rejection, death and his place in the universe. Told in simple but sparkling prose, it is accompanied by illustrations by the eminent Japanese illustrator Ryu Okazaki, some of which are in the same order as works by such masters as Leonard Baskin and Rockwell Kent. The translators, Joseph Sigrist and D.M. Stroud, are both Americans who lived for many years in Japan and who are intimately acquainted with the geographic and literary milieu of the author.

Superb translation/Inspiring and entertaining for kids.
This extremely well-written translation doesn't even sound like a translation most of the time. It is the best of the four available translations of the number-one Japanese children's classic of this century which has sold millions of copies in Japan. It is an inspiring tale of two young boys on a trip through the cosmos as one of them learns to deal with social ostracism (ijime), a missing father, the death of his best friend -- and finally with the meaning of life.

Not 24 hours
I ordered this book in April and it's May now. It says "Available in 24 hours" but Customer Service says it's a Special Order item that ships in "4-6 weeks".

Yet another application of elliptic curves...
The successful proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles was probably the most widely publicized mathematical result of the 20th century. And once again, among their numerous other applications, elliptic curves are employed in the proof. The book is a compilation of articles written by first-class mathematicians, the reading of which will give one a thorough understanding of the proof, along with an overview of some very interesting topics in number theory and algebraic geometry. The reader who undertakes an understanding of the proof already no doubt has a substantial amount of 'mathematical maturity', and no review, no matter how complete, would influence greatly such a reader. Suffice it to say then that this book is excellent, and even a reader interested solely in elliptic curves and modular forms could benefit greatly from the reading of this book.

Great?!?!
This book might be good if you like number theory. But if you're an analyst who hates number theory or a brick-layer, then this book is probably not meant for you. I hope you found this review helpful. Have a nice day.

Good General Book for Novice
This is an excellent little reference book for novice crime writers and experienced writers who need to refresh their memories. It covers a lot of ground, and as a result, suffers from details, which are the backbone for writing good fiction. The chapters are nicely divided into different types of crooks and their methods. The examples make it easy to use them for working plots or sub-plots, but eventually, if you want to put some reality into your novels, you'll need more than this book. Worth it as a second reference if you can't find better.

Great Reference for Crime Writers
Modus Operandi is a great reference book for writers who want to understand how criminals work. Written by two detectives who draw heavily on their experience the book is a packed with useful information ranging from con artists to murderers, carjackers to smugglers. What makes this book good is that it not only covers how the crimes are committed, but also the psychology behind the criminal, police slang and inside information. This is a definite "must have" reference for crime writers.

Entertained Reader
I bought this book, and read it many weeks ago but forgot to write a review over. Honestly I enjoyed the book, and it was terrific entertainment for me the evening I read it in which I remember well. I have to be in the right mood for true crime to sit in a chair all night and read it, and this book enthralled me all evening when I read it. Since I read so many books by Ann Rule, I was interested in reading something written in a different tone and manner in which this book was a hit with me. Personally I would buy these authors books again.

The Washington Compromise
This insightful look into Washington and its workings, is not only eye opening but mind opening. Giving the reader a true assestment of our strategic failures and lack of thinkers within government. The outstanding qualifications of Mr. Churba Phd. and his assessments of our overall need to modernize and keep our defenses strong are quite compelling.Donald Rumsfeld's nomination is just in time. Reading this book, will give you insight as to why Rumsfeld was selected for Defense Secretary. Although Mr. Churba is no longer available for consultation his work in this field will serve as a blueprint for the harsh realities we face as a nation.

The Washington Compromise
This insightful book separates the thinkers those who have come to Washington with credentials, skill and the ability to reason, from those who have been put in those positions by those who want a certain policy carried out. Churba, gives detailed examples, allowing the reader to open not only his eyes but mind as well.

To: Charles Marca from Arlington, VA
I think your comments about the status of Dr. Churba are uncalled for and inappropriate. It is too bad that you did not read anyother of his works.

Accounting Information Systems: Essential Concepts and Applications

Authors: Joseph W. Wilkinson, Michael J. Cerullo, Vasant Raval, and Bernard Wong on Wing
Amazon base price: $110.95

An overkill textbook
As a textbook for an accounting systems class, this text is extremely cumbersome and long-winded. The authors seem to want to beat every subject to death, which results in excrutiatingly long chapters. Much of the material may be relevant to information systems majors taking it in a series of two classes, but is probably not suitable for an accounting major class. The writing style is boring and cryptic in many places. Look into the Gelinas/Sutton/Oram or Bodnar/Hopwood books for much better content and readability.

This is a university text book, not a reference book
I was looking for specialized information and I failed to understand that "Essential Concepts and Applications" meant just what it said: this is a university text book for students, and in this quality it certainly rates a high grade, (although I am not qualified to say if it rates $ 311), but as a reference book for professional in the field, it is useless: half of the book introduces essentials of computer technology, the other half essentials of accounting, but none in depth. I will be more careful in the future and can only lament the loss. However, as a study text book, it is probably very good.

One of the Best AIS Texts
I have used the fourth edition of this book, and it's one of the best AIS text books I have seen. It's concise, to the point, and informative. The fourth edition of this book gets the point across without being longwinded. Supplementary materials are included on a CD and can be accessed if needed or to supplement the text material. The problems are extremely useful. I highly recommend this text for use in accounting information systems classes.
