A story written 50 years ago, and so actual here, Israel
OK. I'm in the middle of reading. I enjoy eavery moment. It's a simple story, writtenn as if told.. It is intersting to see how many things havn't really changed here, in Israel, while also teaching a lot about recent history. I wonder how the English translation is. (I'M reading it in HEBREW)

Simon Y El Nino/Simon and the Boy

A touching story of growing up in times of war
Franck Germain, an 11 year old boy, lives in Paris. It is 1942 and the war is strangling the city. Franck never knew his father. His mother, Mireille, lives together with a certain Simon Falkenstein. The little Franck really hates this guy because he steals all the love from his mother. But what is even worse is that he's Jewish and the Germans are looking for him. Their relationship gets a completely new dimension when the war starts to mess with their worriless lives.

Joseph Joffo became famous with his book Un sac de billes (A bag of marbles), in which he recounts the story of his youth: how he grew up as a Jewish boy during the big war in France. In Simon et l'enfant (Simon and the Boy) the author returns to the same setting, but applies a fictitious story-line.

The story opens with an almost standard conflict between a boy and some sort of stepfather, but quickly turns out to work itself up to a higher level. Depictions of bitterness and misery are fluently interwoven with funny episodes that show that despite all people still value the small joys of life. The eternal opposition between good and evil is constantly present and Joseph Joffo is a master in bringing these all together in a book that reads like an adventure story, but still gives you enough subjects to think about.

Note: I read the original French version.

Skinflick : a Dave Brandstetter mystery
Published in Unknown Binding by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston ()

Average review score:

Tough California P.I. Novel
When a highly religious and widely respected churchman is found with his neck broken on his own front step, insurance investigator David Brandstetter has questions--and they lead in some extremely unsavory directions in this classically styled California P.I. tale, directions that include the tawdry underbelly of prostitution, adult bookstores, and pornography.

This 1979 novel by Josephy Hansen is written in a style that calls to mind the best of such writers as James M. Cain: less of a detective story or murder mystery than a hard-as-nails action novel, Hansen's prose is clean, unsentimental, detailed, occasionally witty, and somewhat bitter. The hero of the piece is a bit unusual, for Hansen's David Brandstetter is a gay man. Some readers may be put off by this, but it will be their loss, for it gives the novel an edge of interest too often lacking in the genre, and even the most demanding reader will have no complaint with the fast-paced, action-laced, and very gritty story. Recommended--if you can find it.

This is a marvelous book for all ages.
I really enjoyed the Seneca Indian tales--Parker makes them come to life and makes the reader able to "see" the story in his or her own mind. The tales are very entertaining and often help illustrate a lesson. Readers of any age will love these stories--from age 9 to 90. As the editor of a book of Delaware legends, I appreciate a well-told story, and I sincerely recommend these.

classic analysis of small town social relationships
Having lived in a number of small towns, I am continually amazed at the relevance of this classic study to contemporary local politics and social relationships. Long before "investigative reporting", a grad student goes undercover for a year in a small town and reports his findings -- social groups, power, politics and tradition. This is not a dry scientific analysis, but a fascinating description of American life outside the city.

An valuable resource for any level player or coach
Joseph Luxbacher's **Soccer: Steps to Success** provides soccer players of all levels the tools needed to become a better player. Well written and concise, Dr. Luxbacher not only offers the reader the steps to achieve success, but also (and perhaps more importantly), unlike most instructional books, diagnoses frequent errors and provides the steps to overcome them. The book covers all aspects of play and details dozens of practice games designed to improve any soccer players ability.

A great read for any player or coach who wishes to improve their understanding of the game and their skills or the skills of their team.
