This text is the first word in Biomedical Ref. It is arranged in a user friendly manner and is filled with useful data. The ethics section is a plus for ISO compliant users. Charts, formulas, and frequently used Engineering terminology abound. This updated version is a vast improvement over the 1995 edition.

This handbook provides the reader with an excellent overview of what Biomedical Engineering is and what are the trend that we can expect in the future.

The handbook covers 18 different sections, each one containing about 6 different topics. At the beginning of each section there is a short explanation of the main issues that will be covered.

Although the Handbook will not be useful for an expert in one of the topics, it will certainly be useful to explore different areas in Biomedical Engineering for professionals, or students who need a brief but concise and depth analysis for a particular topic.

I do volunteer work with the blind and find it a rewarding experience. I like to see the happiness on their faces when they are having fun. It is enjoyable being their eyes. Most are seniors and have been blind for life. When I discovered Blind Willie & Other Stories, it was a revelation. Here was a story where the hero is a dog who is more developed or evolved than his master. Willy's a good man, but he does not come close to the moral growth of his new dog, Perro. Willy does change in the end. The blind can accomplish and do. Loss of sight does not hinder personal growth. This story makes that clear.

The Other Stories leaves one with the sense that the writer drew on his own personal knowledge and experiences to illustrate love, friendship, loneliness, brotherhood, and compassion.

Toy Henry takes the reader into the soul and heart of a young urban teenager and his daily struggle to escape the life he is trapped in. He tries to use his artistic talent only to have his past immorality destroy him and all that he loved. I think this story is so real it deserves to be classed as a modern classic.

I liked Blind Willie, althogh it took me a couple chapters to get into it. I particularly liked the premise of some humans being able to communicate with animals. It definitely reminded me of the relationship between the two main characters in the book "Ishmael," particularly when Perro was discussing his former maste Lawrence. I also liked Willies perspective on religion, since my views are some what similar. I definitely think a sequal is in order for this story. Would love to see developed further.

I like the how the Pie story and Cookie Trilogy revolved around "karma," more or less, fate, and self fulfilling prophecy.
I especially liked the Fortune Cookie chapter. Twelve Boots in the saddle left me wanting more. I thought it was an interesting premise.

I enjoyed the Last Tribesman especially since I remember reading a short book about Ishi in grade school. The ending was a clever twist.

The Studio was a little implausible, but everything Hollywood falls into the implausible.

Of all the stories Toy Henry was the greatest. The characters jumped off the page. The story took me through a range of emotions. I hated the guy then loved him.

Overall I thought the book was well written.

I could not review the book because I have not seen or read it. In any case the cover and the title appear to be very good for particularly employers who may want high productivity from their employees and also for the employees who more often want more responsibility and advancements either in their present posts or to higher ones. The prints (electronic)appear reader-friendly.

"Building effective technical training: How to develop hard skills within organizations" by Rothwell and Benkowski is intended for any worker who must apply devices (such as PC's, software) that "govern them and their work", engineers and workers who apply special knowledge in manufacturing settings, and MIS professionals who apply knowledge in high-tech companies. The organization of the book is logical walking the reader through the contents of this resource. Their "Lessons Learned" chapter (Part V) is particularly well done. The added bonus of a CD-ROM and Appendices (specifically IV) enhance an already highly useable text making it easier for those of us who straddle both the practitioner and academic worlds.

To a follower of St. Therese, this book about her sister Celine (Sr. Genevieve) is, of course, very interesting, even fascinating. I wish there were a little more scholarly info, however. Celine always seemed especially interesting to me. She had many opportunities: a marriage proposal, a proposal to found an active order in Canada, apparently a strong talent in art and photography. Yet these don't really shine through in this book. Conversely, her sanctity didn't come through either, for me. Still, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves reading the details about Therese's family. I would love to see a good book about her sisters Pauline and Marie, also. I understand that one about Leonie is already in print.

This book was a truthful account of the life of Celine, sister and witness to Saint Therese. Celine worked very hard to carry on the way of "spiritual childhood" as her sister suggested, and the book tells of some of her trials towards seeing Therese canonized. Celine is a wonderful person herself, delightfully human, and a woman I would have wanted to meet. If you've enjoyed the stories of Therese, you'll enjoy this book.

Joe Gauld's practical experience and pragmatic system helps parents evaluate their own family's values. The book is a fast read. It engages humor with real life sad examples of families and teenagers who turned their lives around. The school expanded to two campuses, the second in Woodstock, CT.

Joe Gauld's goal was to reform American education when he founded Hyde School in Bath, ME about 35 years ago. His idea was that only about 12% of students had the aptitude to really succeed in the current system, which emphasized top grades leading to a great college and eventually making a lot of money. The other 88% of students were relegated to second-class status or worse. Furthermore, he believed that success in life was not created by high aptitude and a prestigious job, but rather by character traits that would lead to fulfillment of each person's unique potential. To date, the Hyde schools have expanded to two boarding schools (Bath, ME and Woodstock, CT) and two inner-city public charter schools (New Haven and Washington, DC). It has also spun off teacher training programs and a nationwide parent training program. The parent program is described in a new book by Joe's son and daughter in law (Biggest Job We'll Ever Have : The Hyde School Program for Character-Based Education and Parenting -- Laura Gauld (Editor), Malcolm Gauld; Hardcover, to be published by Scribner's in Feb. 2002.

As a parent of two children at Hyde, I can say from experience that what this book says is what the school actually does. For me, the Hyde experience has revolutionized the way I think about education, parenting, and other related efforts, such as psychotherapy and family counseling. The present, majority system is doing it wrong. Joe Gauld had the vision to see the truth, and he set up a system that does it right.

This is a very good biography of an overlooked great American thinker. Mr. Brent does a good job of recounting the life of Peirce without getting bogged down in the details of Peirce's philosophy which is well documented in several other books. The book also attempts to analyze Peirce's behavoir and why he failed as an academic, something that desperately needed to be done. As Peirce's reputation inevitatably increases, this biography will become a classic reference to this very interesting American.

This book contains a great deal of information on the life of a sadly-neglected philosopher; one of the most brilliant Americans of the 19th century. Dr. Brent has a wonderful, at times even poetic, writing style, and he has "lived" with Peirce so long that he has excellent insight into the man behind the philosophy. Struggling through Peirce in a class? This book may not make his philosophy "easy"--but it will make him more human.

William Whalen provides a very straightforward and easy to read explanation of Freemasonry and its relation to Christianity without the alarmist hype so often found in books of this genre.

The book focusses on the Craft as practiced in America, but also touches upon the English and Grand Orient Lodges. He reviews the Blue Lodge Degrees (Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason)with just the right amount of detail -- neither glossing over, nor bogging down with the needless repetition often found in "exposes." (The full rituals are readily available from Masonic sources.)

He explains the history of the Blue Lodge, the Scottish and York Rites, the Shrine, Prince Hall Lodges, and other Allied Masonic Organizations. For the most part, he lets Masonry speak for itself; not only does he cite Masonic sources that claim Masonry as a religion of itself, but includes Masonic defenses of its compatibility with Christianity (and other religions).

In his chapter "Catholic Attitudes toward the Lodge," Mr. Whalen presents the objections of the Catholic Church to Freemasonry as consistently taught for nearly three hundred years. Freemasonry represents a belief system that is at best indifferent toward Christianity, and the unique plan of salvation revealed by Jesus Christ.

He also explains the confusion that resulted in the 1970s, after a Cannon Law revision removed the explicit reference to Freemasonry and its penalty of excommunication for Catholics who joined the Lodge. Many Catholics apparently became Masons during this time under the mistaken impression that Church Teaching had changed. (Rome has since clarified this misunderstanding.)

Whalen devotes a chapter to the Protestant and Eastern Orthodox criticisms of Freemasonry, which are virtually identical to the Catholic position.

In his closing chapter "The Christian and the Lodge," the author explores reasons for the decline of Freemasonry in our society, and insists that while "Christians must respect the decision of others to affiliate with the lodge,...[many] have come to realize that the Great Architect of the Universe is not the God Jesus taught them to call Our Father."

William Whalen gives an excellent description and history of freemasonry. Today when some might question what all the fuss is between Christianity and freemasonry, this book explains in extremely understanding detail. William Whalen tells everything from the secret "blood oaths" freemasons take to why freemasons vowed not to let the "enemy," the Catholic Church, continue succeeding in providing health care through Catholic Hospitals. A great book for understanding how egregiously mislead people are into believing freemasonry is just another fraternal organization. Exposes the evil of freemasonry at its most basic, as well as advanced levels.

This handbook is a shorter version of the textbook of Natural Medicine published a few years ago by the first two authors. The three present authors are all affiliated with the Bastyr University, Washington in the United States. This college of naturopathic medicine was established in 1978 by Les Griffith, Bill Mitchell and Joe Pizzorno in the name of their teacher John Bastyr. He was one of the pioneers of natural medicine, who had grown up with a father pharmacist and a mother interested in healthy living in the beginning of the 1900 in Seattle.

I am so happy with this book. The information in it is well organized. The reccommended treatments include the scientific data/studies that support the modality. This is the best written handbook of natural health that I have found.

This is an excellent and helpful book for anyone wishing to know the locations of sanghas, monasterys, and the like in North America. There is also interesting commentary from various North American practitioners of Buddhism included in the material. The overall layout of the book is good and the amount of information is massive. My only complaint is that the information is divided into the three schools of Buddhism and then it is put in geographic order by state and province. I would have preferred it to have been all geographic with the type of Buddhism practiced placed in the listing. Others may be perfectly happy with how the book is set up however. Regardless of this I would recommend this book for those who want a large directory of Buddhist groups in North America.

This book is extremely informative and practical. It clearly describes the different forms of Buddhism, including articles on each, and also covers non-sectarian Buddhist organizations.
Buddhist centers/groups are listed according to type (Theravada, etc.), and includes all the essential information for each, such as contact information and programs offered.
There is also an appendix listing the centers by location (alphabetically by state and locality), and another listing them alphabetically by name.
Many illustrations of centers and spiritual heads also add to the appeal and usefulness of this excellent book.
