An Amazing Adventure: Joe and Hadassah's Personal Notes on the 2000 Campaign

Authors: Joseph I. Lieberman, Sarah Crichton, and Hadassah Lieberman
Amazon base price: $19.99

Mostly 2004 Campaign Ad
It's a light, quick, fluff read. If you liked Gore/Lieberman in 2000 you'll like the book. Lieberman falls all over himself emphasizing his religion while feigning shock that it could be an issue. He also sidesteps any criticism from fellow Jews that his positions are decidedly unorthodox. He emphasizes that everywhere his wife ever went and everyone she ever spoke to always loved her. If something went wrong in the campaign, it was because he didn't follow through with his instincts. He even quoted an editorial where someone said that Lieberman can make an attack not feel like an attack. Hardball politico, but with a smile.

What a pleaseant surprise!
In the last election, I did not know much about Joe Lieberman and that is because I did not give my self the opportunity to do so. When this book first came out, I scoffed at it, because it looked so "light" and yet after reading it I was taken aback, not only on what an interesting look it is into a presidential campaign, but also into the man himself.

Suffice it to say I agree with much of the man's politics, but that non-withstanding, this book was an interesting look at a family who lives their faith while working on the campain trail. It was touching as well as eye-opening.

In addition this book was able to tell its tale without totally stomping on the opposing party. It was obviously written by a man with good character and ethics. Perhaps it was released to coinside with his run for the presidency, but it has made me take a second look at this man and boy am I impressed!

Gotta love it!!!
The Liebermans amazing adventure also becomes an amazing one for the person reading this book! Written in the similar format of "he says, she says" or James Carville & Mary Matalin's "All's Fair" book, Joe and Hadassah Lieberman share their thoughts, feelings and experiences on the campaign 2000 trail.

Reading intimate details, insofar as Senator Lieberman's contemplations regarding how to remain true to his own ideals of his religion and political convictions and Hadassah's contemplations regarding her life experiences - especially having been raised by parents who are survivors of the holocaust, is incredibly inspiring!

One cannot possibly read this book and not develop a greater appreciation for the sacrifices, courage, determination and faith that the Liebermans made throughout the campaign and throughout their lives.

Not only is this a "biography" but it is also an excellent book on the political process, namely the campaign process. Throughout the book, the reader becomes acutely aware of the amount of work, energy and choregraphing a national campaign requires.

A very inspiring and informative book, indeed! I highly recommend it!

Animals of the Soul: Sacred Animals of the Oglala Sioux

Book fell short of its mark
I had high expectations when I began reading this book. I was looking for a clear and concise description of animal totems and how they related to the life of the Sioux. I was disappointed as it appeared the author never did quite get across the specific meaning of the animals and their relationship to man. The background material was good as well as the information on dances and ceremonies. Dr. Brown seemed right on the edge of a wonderful definition of the animals but just was not able to get the meaning across.

An excellent introduction to Oglala beliefs
This book is not a comprehensive study of all Oglala beliefs but is a great overview of their main ceremonies and the meaning of the animals they worshipped. It's a great book for those people interested in learning about this culture without being mired down in material intended for scholars and those embarking on in depth research in this subject. A great book for students of social history.

a book for those willing to accept and learn
This book is not for those who are blinded by what is expected of them in modern western life. Joseph Epes Brown treats the subject in a factual and down to earth way, not romantisicing. This book is a fascinating insight into the Spiritual way of the Oglala. It explains about the Oglala's attitude to those who shared the earth, their mother, with them. He explains Mita kuye ayasin - we are relatives- and how the animal spirits could help a man through life. He has a good descriptive set of chapters about the main animals and what they mean to the Oglala. He also shows which animal had which qualities and how these responded to male or female. This is only a book for those who are wiling to accept and to learn. Those who have lost the way will not read it properly. They certainly will not understand it. This book should be read, not with the two eyes of the head but with the Chante Ista, the single eye of the heart. A very enjoyable and informative book.

Good compiliation of information
I have read "Eat Right 4 Your Type" and "Body For Life". For a person who has not read these previously, this book, in a nutshell, takes both these concepts/programs and merges them together (as much as it can be merged) (Perhaps making it a less expensive alternative to the buying two books.) Please keep in mind my rating of three stars only reflects the usefullness of the information to me as I already follow a (very similiar) plan that I compiled as a result of reading the other two books. Mr. Chrisiano does an excellent job of putting the information in an easy and usable format. (So do the other authors) As the book stands alone, it would be more like a 4.5. But I must say that I am somewhat alarmed at the similarities yet the authors of the other books were not referenced. (and they were written first) If you already own, or have read, one or both of the other books mentioned I don't recommend it, any reasonable person would be able to tie the two together and come up with the same concept. If you don't own either of them, go for it. I firmly believe in the concept.

Forget everything you thought you knew.
Forget everything you thought you knew about "doing the right thing for your body" and read this book. I have struggled with digestive disorders and food battles for the past 20 years. I dreaded eating meals because I never knew how I was going to feel afterwards. (bloated, headache, hungry, sleepy) I thought I was eating healthy with shredded wheat for breakfast and fresh baked pumpernickel/cucumber sandwiches for lunch... the "list of foods to avoid" section of my blood type was invaluable. Two days after eating from my beneficial food list and avoiding the "avoid list",which included shredded wheat and pumpernickel bread! I dropped five pounds, no bloating, nausea and my energy level has soared. if you are having a struggle with nutrition, weight or food issues... you'll be pleased with the contents of this book.

Changed my life
I must tell you that at first I was very skeptical about the premise of the book--That a person's genetic characteristics, namely, blood type, could play a role in what foods one should eat and which foods should be avoided. But, I took the author's advice and put the diet to the test. The book outlines very nicely (based on an individual's blood type) which foods are beneficial to each blood type, which foods are neutural and which foods are to be avoided by each blood type.

As I took the advice, the results were incredible. This thing works and works fast! I felt better than I have in years. I guess its because my blood sugar levels stabalized. My blood pressure also improved as a result of the advice in this book. With ZERO exercise, although the book points out the importance of exercise, and gives great answers for how to best exercise based on your body's shape, I didn't work exercise due to my schedule at the time I started the plan. I LOST 10 pounds in two weeks! Incredible. I would highly recommend this book to any one who is not feeling their best or doesn't have the energy they should have. It will change lives. You will feel great and be much more healthy when you listen to Joesph Christiano, you may even live longer!

Suspenseful read
This is a well written and suspenseful book, with a richness of detail reminiscent of Stephen King. The fighter pilot sequences are especially exciting. I look forward to more books by Mr. Bailey.

You'll be happy to stay inside
Gave me nightmares but I enjoyed every minute of it! Guaranteed to give you ice-cube blood the next time you go outside in the rain. And no, you're not even safe in your car . . .

GOOD TILL THE END!
This book is a pleasant surprise!!! I loved the premise of the story and Mr. Bailey's attention to detail is very precise. I hope to see more titles offered by Joe Bailey soon!!!

Interesting, thought provoking read
I read this as an outsider of the Catholic Faith, but I found it very intriguing, nonetheless. Ratzinger's perspective on the essence and origin of the Church is impossible to dismiss, and the truth in this book, although it's doubtful that the author intended this, exposes huge problems in the (many) Protestant concepts of "church". Although the contents of this book were not originally intended to be presented in book form, the ideas are fluid and clear. A great book. 4 stars only because I'm not (at least not yet) Catholic, and, therefore, there wasn't much practical wisdom I could take from this book.

Communion with Church, Communion with Christ
Of all Cardinal Ratzinger's works, this is my favorite. It touches upon issues of ecclesiology and sacramental theology. In short, Cardinal Ratzinger ties in the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Holy Eucharist, with the Church. Through it, he explores God's covenant with His people. I have long noticed the various double meanings -- one sacramental, the other ecclesiological -- in much of our theological language. Words like "communion" and "Body of Christ" carry the double significance of our communion with one another, as well as our communion with Christ. This book explores both, tying them together in an easy to read, as well as understandable, format.

For a People in Search of Their Identity
This is a little book which was not originally a book by intention. Yet it is held together by the internal theme of ecclesial self-identity. It is a little book with a big message.

In any sphere in order to know how something is to function, it is extremely important to understand its origin and purpose. It is no different with the Church. In a confused and confusing world there is need for such a book as this to re-establish and re-invigorate our ecclesial focus. ...And Christ Jesus is its essence and center.

CALLED TO COMMUNION is not necessarily the easiest read because a good part of it was originally directed at individuals(Bishops) who could be assumed to have had some prior knowledge of the subject matter. Still it is worth the time invested, for even the average reader interested in the Church as well, to search out the pearls of wisdom which are assuredly to be found within its pages.

As always the Cardinal writes from an admirably, profound knowledge and depth of faith.

Awesome Vampire Romp
I first became acquainted with Carmilla from the Hammer Studios Karstein Trilogy of The Vampire Lovers, Lust for a Vampire, and Twins of Evil. The Vampire Lovers is the only one that draws from this book. The book starts getting into the movie from about the fifth chapter. I recognised dialog and descriptions in the plots of both. It's quite a liberal adaption, but the essence of the story remains intact. For example, the dialog isn't verbatim. The single line from The Vampire Lovers of "You must die, everybody must die" is about a paragraph's length of dialog in the book. It's a fantastic tale. Most of the lesbian is implied, and I caught gratuitous nudity added to the movie, which does add to the movie's appeal. I love the short length of about 150 pages. It never drags, and the chapters are no more than 10 pages each, making for easy reading. I put Carmilla above Bram Stoker's Dracula. Carmilla is a must-have for people with more than a passing interest of the vampire myth. I highly recommend this book. It's excellent.

Carmilla is the best vampire sotory ever
Carmilla is incredibly short by modern standards. A victorian novel that **predates** anything Braum Sotker did - this classic was heavilly plagarized by Stoker (much to his credit for having excellent taste). This is a must read in its original form. If you do enjoy this novella you will probably also highly enjoy "La Horla", which is probably the second best vampire story ever penned.

"Dracula" is the greatest but "Carmilla" is the best.
Every Halloween I like to re-read the first 4 chapters of "Dracula." Those 4 chapters create the greatest vampire story ever written. However after the first 4 chapters Bram Stoker's epistilary style bogs down, becomes tiring and very out of date. Thirty years ago I discovered LeFanu's novelette, "Carmilla" and found the best vampire story that can be read.
Carmilla was written over 130 years ago but still bears the marks of a stylish and well crafted story. LeFanu, an Irish writer, created a cursed family whose vamire descendant preys on two modern (for the 19th century) families. The story is rich in atmosphere and is filled with the vampire trappings that Bram Stoker later wove into Dracula. But the best feature of Carmilla is similar to the best feature of Dracula---they both create really evil vampire figures. But there is a complexity to Carmilla that has been argued by readers for 130 years. Is there a lesbian touch to Carmilla or is it a straight (no pun) forward vampire story? LeFanu teases the reader with a story that must have thrilled the Victorian world that first read Carmilla.
I must say that if I were going out to buy Carmilla I would turn to the Dover publication of, "The Best Ghost Stories of J. S. LeFanu." The Dover edition has several other ghost stories by LeFanu and Carmilla has some of the original illustrations that appeared in British periodicals.
If your taste is for vampire stories Carmilla, like the first 4 chapters of Dracula, is a great horror reading. Both show us powerful vampire villians. Both build to wonderful horror climaxes. Both show us that you have to be Irish to create a great vampire story. Halloween is always coming.

Would give it a 3 1/2 but gave it the benefit
This bok is great book for starters! I really do recomend it for starters. Other than that its an ok book. You can master the book in 3-4 days, and a magic book should last much much much longer. I do however recomend this book for people who are intrested in starting card magic.

Good book on card magic!
This is not an excellent book, but it's not a bad book either. It's a good book: it contains tricks for you who doesn't know sleight of hand and for you who knows it. The self-working tricks contained here are not dumb, they do have that great climax too. You'll also find some tricks that require gimmicked decks, such as the Stripper Deck, but most of them only require a normal deck and/or usual props such as a rubber band. If you look for some classic tricks but not the one's shown on TV, you'll be happy to own this book.

Unique card magic!!
This book has a wealth of information on card handling and technique. There are many top notch card effects including some different and offbeat tricks. Charles Jordan was definetely a card genius and you will see why in the way his card magic is done. A must have!

Conditioning for Soccer
I don't normally write book reviews, but I was very disappointed with this book and felt obligated to balance the other overly enthusiastic 5 star reviews. Some of the material, such as the chapter on "Strength Training Exercises", is really not soccer specific. Also, the chapter on "Speed Training" is largely comprised of games such as "Numbers Passing Game" and "Three Versus One in Grid", which Luxbacher had the audacity to simply excerpt from his other book "Soccer Practice Games"(a far better book with great games I have used successfully with my travel soccer team). The 4 page chapter on Plyometric training was interesting, but overall don't waste your money on this book.

great book if u love soccer and want to move faster
This book lowered my 2mile run from 16 minutes to 13.5 in hardly 1.5 months. the off season training guide is comprehensive and differs each day so as to not get bored. plyometrics add true fun. Much of the book focuses on other aspects of soccer such as quick turns and acceleration. Even a section on pregame eating for peak performance.

A Wondeful Guide to Soccer Fitness
This book contains all that is needed to know for proper soccer conditioning. The conditioning process is broken down into succint, easy to follow and perform drills. Any level of conditioning will benefit from study and use of this book. Mr. Luxbacher has made a real contribution to soccer coaching here!

Book Review
Skillfully written; shrewdly argued, but the premise just doesn't hold up. A few businesses could economically cut greenhouse gas emissions and will learn this sooner or later. This reduction, however, is a trickle in the ocean. Kyoto is only marginally more valuable. The only way to prevent global warming is to remove greenhouse gases from the air or otherwise cool the Earth; a multibillion dollar decades long research project is needed. The really interesting topic for Dr. Romm's next book could be why the conferences and media coverage about global warming never seem to mention this fact.

simple approach and numerous examples
The book should enlighten those equating the green movement with adverse economic impact. It simply doesnt have to be the case. Companies like Shell and Dow are realizing, the early birds will gain serious competitive advantages when adopting "cooler" operating philosophies including: lower operating costs in general, increased productivity, and lower carbon costs when they ultimately get implemented. Numerous verified examples are provided that cement what should be a common sense belief that reduction of waste (all types) lead to leaner more competitive companies.

I approached my own boss with these ideas and received a chuckle in response. Its an uphill fight out there, hopefully the more people become informed, the easier it will be. This book is a great one to hand to a nay sayer. (I plan on sending a copy to both my boss and President Bush for Christmas)

Improving your Bottom Line by Reducing Greenhouse Gases
By Stephen Corrick Reprinted with permission...Joseph J. Romm was an Assistant Secretary of theUS Department of Energy. He obviously learned his lessons well. Hisbook, Cool Companies, makes an overwhelming case: Not only willreducing greenhouse gases not hurt companies' ability to compete, the action of reducing greenhouse gases (and industrial energy waste generally) offers the single easiest productivity booster, and among the shortest payback periods of any available to American industry today.

Cool Companies offers insights into the detailed processes by which all company sites-from industrial giants like DuPont and 3M all the way down to individual apartment owners-have used greenhouse gas emission reduction to drive many more dollars to their bottom line.

The only question one is left with after Romm so effectively makes his case is why the coal and oil companies are playing Chicken Little and screaming that reducing greenhouse gases will hurt American business. Obviously, the only American businesses they are referring to must be their own. The Wall Street Journal and the American Chamber of Commerce would be well served to get the true picture and start representing the needs and interests of the majority of their customers-whose interests, at this point, are often diametrically opposed to those of the fossil fuel industry.

The Dividend Rich Investor
A very good book on how to buy common stocks directly from the company. I have a friend who is a stock broker at a major firm and all the scams that go on there I am shocked that more stock brokers are not doing time. Even main stream firms stink of the boiler room. They push the stock of the day and most brokers know little to nothing about the market, they're just there to sale the stock the firm tells them to sale. Total boiler room hype!
Drips are the best way to buy stock. Why pay stock broker fees. Buy direct. Save money. This book tells you how.

Highly recommended for beginners
It's not exactly the most glamorous way to invest in stocks, but selecting good quality dividend paying stocks is a great way to earn passive income over a long period of time.

This book contained a few lists of stocks with average yields and so forth which I found helpful, but the sheer amount of numbers became mind numbing at times. Overall, I found some really good information in here about how to select reliable dividend paying stocks and which ones to avoid. Some of the issues covered were companies that regularly increase their dividend yield, how to aggressively buy stocks in companies which have actually cut their dividend recently. I was surprised that the authors advocated buying stocks with low, but increasing yields. After reading that chapter, I can see their point. If you want to chase high growth, high paying stocks, don't go for dividend paying stocks.

I'm giving this book 4 stars because I think it provides much valuable, but basic, information. This book will only appeal to novice or beginning investors who know little or nothing about dividend paying stocks. If you're more of an advanced investor who likes buying high flying Internet stocks, you can skip this book. Dividend investing is a very conservative, long term investment method, and if that's what you're looking for, by all means buy this book.

Best investment advice
The dividend investing approach illustrated in this book is perhaps the most under-rated, under-promoted investment strategy. It's not as exciting as investing in internet stocks, but it's very easy to implement and it can create an amazing income for life. I especially recommend this book for young investors.
