Interesting biography of a hard subject
This is the first biography and one of the few available about Steven Crane, published about a decade after his death, by a personal associate of Crane's (Thomas Beer - a contemporary author in his own right). Beer does a good job at dispelling popular myths at the time of Crane's death about Crane's life. Probably of most interest to those reading Crane's work and wish to know more about Crane. Published in 1933.

rich in detail about the family of St. Therese
Father Piat offers a wealth of detail about the families of Therese's parents, Louis Martin and Zelie Guerin, and about the family life they enjoyed, especially up to the birth of their ninth and last child. The tone is somewhat worshipful, but the book is well worth while for all lovers of Therese.

queering straights
Like the increased visibility and rush to study 'whiteness' in the wake of critical race theory's interventions, this edited collection proposes to make heterosexuality visible in the wake of queer theory. Applying queer theory to the contruction of heterosexuality in its many forms allows a break with the normative. The writers here thus work to make visible "queer straights" and further disrupt heteronormative institutions and discourse. While scattered among a broad array of subjects (from Seinfeld to Shakespeare), the papers work well together to show how queer theory can be usefully applied to the analysis of norming institutions and identities. Some may object to the claiming of a queer identity by "straights,"; others will find that the authors make their case and do progressive work by extending the bounds of queerness.

spiritualism for the young reader
tales of the fox sisters, and horses that wore charms. This collection of true tales of spiritualism in america is a rare read. The stories are as entertaining as Sleepy Hollow the only difference is that many of these strange tales are thought to be truth. Illustated by William Sauts Bock, this book is a beautifully done collection of wonderous stange tales.

excellent introduction to how residential streets evolved
This books describes the history and evolution of residential streets in the US and Britain. It remains very objective, until the last chapter when the authors push for the shared streets concept. As a transportation planning professional, I found it very informative and compelling. It did the impossible: it changed my mind on the value of cul-de-sacs.

a thorough introduction
This is the ultimate starting point for students who want to enter the field of string theory. It discusses most subject in great detail. However in can't be self contained or complete at every stage since progresses in string theory are being made every day. Nevertheless it provides enough background to understand current articles.

For me, this is a good book for students who want to get master degree in Civil Engineering, Building Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. Students can understand of the dynamic response of structures and the analytical tools to determine such responses. Furthermore, it demonstrates modern theories, solution techniques and real-world problems.

Student Revolution: A Global Confrontation
Published in Hardcover by W. W. Norton & Company (November, 1969)
Author: Joseph A., Jr. Califano

Used price: $151.80
Collectible price: $9.99

An Interesting Find
I was lucky enough to come accross this book at a library book sale, and it was a good find. Califano gives a brief overview of the turmoil surrounding S.D.S. and the student uprisings at universities in the late sixties. Part of the focus is on Berkley, but the book also covers western european unversities in some detail.

Califano's portrayal is from an outsider's perspective (he was not involved in the movement), but he is very sympathetic. Even where he disagrees with some individual causes the students brought up in their protests, he recognizes that if the students are in turmoil then there must be some very real problem underneath the surface.

This guide is usefull to organize the studing of public finance. Due to the large amount of practice questions and review notes, this book serves as a complete guide to the reading of The Economy of the Public Sector.

In my personal point of view, its ideal to complement the reading of the book with this complete study guide.

Theoretical treatise on subsampling
Subsampling is a form of data reuse similar to the bootstrap. However the idea of subsampling preceded the bootstrap. The original work is due to Hartigan in the 1970s and was motivation for some of Efron's ideas on bootstrap. The authors begin with a treatment of bootstrap theory. They then introduce subsampling under the assumption that the data are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d). They then provide the theoretical development of subsampling for i.i.d. data, stationary time series, non-stationary time series, random fields and marked point processes. The material is thorough and includes some of the authors' own original research. It is a highly advanced text that presupposes a first year graduate course in theoretical statistics.
