Lone Voyager
I found an old copy of this book and read it a year ago. An incredible true story. I`m glad to see that it is available in paperpback again.

Remarkable adventure
After having read The Perfect Storm, I was interested in other stories about the fishermen of the Gloucester area. This book fit the bill perfectly--just as harrowing as The Perfect Storm, but with a happier ending.

An outstanding story of an adventurer par excellence!
This is without a doubt the best seafaring story I have read since reading Joshua Slocum's account of his sailing adventures. Would make a wonderful film if produced by someone careful enough to make the details realistic.

Indispensable for a Seychellois trip
Two summers ago we went into Seychelles, and Mauritius,Reunion& Seychelles LP travel guide was essential for us. Thanks to it, we could discover Seychelles was not just a diving and incredible beaches paradise, but its interiors landscapes were the best of our journey. We recomend it,because its fantastic information about Mahe,Praslin and La Digue islands, their national parks (such as Sainte Anne or Vallee de Mai). Prices were as high as the author wrote! and all information about public buses, rent-a-car and restaurants was right. Just one thing, we couldn't find where La Gogue Reservoir was! If anybody can strength the lake exists, please let us know!!

Fantastic Guide Book
This guide was my Bible while I traveled through Mahe and Praslin islands in 1999. The Seychelles are full of kind, open-hearted locals who are generous and more than willing to show Westerners around. My trusty LP guide helped me find several reasonable b&b's, Michael Adams' studio (wonderful local artist) and the most perfect beaches in the Indian Ocean. What I love about LP guides, and this one in particular, is the extensive history of the area the book is covering, as well as the locals' interests. Those intending to visit this incredible area should take this guide book - the photography alone will tempt anyone.

Outstanding Guidebook
I used an earlier edition of this book on a trip in 1996, in which I visited the Seychelles, Mauritius, and Reunion. I was travelling independently (not as part of a package tour) and the book helped in many ways to make my trip a great one. It provides a wealth of information about hotels and restaurants, island culture, and places and things to see on the islands. If you can only visit one of these three islands, I would recommend the Seychelles, which offer some of the finest tropical scenery I have ever seen. One advantage of Mauritius for the budget-minded traveler is that it is considerably less expensive than the Seychelles.

Touching
The author's grate sensibility comes out through his words, describing feelings that we all have or had in the past, but we couldn never express them like this. Through his wards, the author creates a special bound with the reader, taking him into the writer's world, which is, hopefully, his own world. Enjoy reading this fantastic book

Do not pass this one up.
I must say this is one of the finist poetry and photography book that I have read. I can really relate to what the author was feeling each time I read a poem. The clear and understanding literature is very enjoyable to read. I find myself reading Love Triangle over and over again. Do not pass this one up.

Do not pass this up
The first time I read the back cover, I knew this book of poetry was going to be well written. I have enjoyed the poetry and photography. I can actually relate to the authors feelings and emotions on being in love. I still find myself picking up the book to read it again and again. You will like it and find yourself consumed with its literature.

Lucy Goes to the Country

Incredible!
This is an absolute must buy. The story is totally delightful -- cat lovers, take notice! Lucy the cat migrates from the City to the country every week with her two big guys, and this story is about her (mis)adventures at their weekend party.

The fact that her big people are two men obviously in love and partnered is incidental to the story, which makes it almost unique (Anna O'Day and the O Ring is the only other one I can think of, and that story is pretty blah). The gay subtext is most amusing when one of the men is enamored of the adorable fireman who comes to rescue Lucy from one of her misadventures (while the other glares).

The illustratations are terrific! This book is on my holiday list to give to all kids in this age range.

Susan in Ann Arbor

From Bay Windows, San Francisco, June 11, 1998
Reviewed by Harriet L. Schwartz Recent news has confirmed that the battle over gay-related children's books in public libraries continues. Most recently, a Baptist minister in Texas attempted to keep "Heather Has Two Mommies" and "Daddy's Roommate" out of circulation by checking out and then buying the books, according to the Associated Press. However, publicity in the town's newspapers magnified local interest in the books, forcing the libraries to obtain extra copies. Soon, anti-gay advocate will have another book to battle when Alyson Wonderland releases "Lucy Goes to the Country"...a vividly illustrated book that follows the story of Lucy as she travels to the country with her "two Big Guys." Children will follow Lucy's funny encounters with birds, guests, and a dog, while adults will catch a second level of humor.

Another Lucy to love!
I thought no book about cats could equal May Sarton's marvelous "The Fur Person"...but I was wrong! Lucy is a rambunctious amber and white cat who lives in a New York apartment, which she shares with her two "Big Guys". The authors, the two "Big Guys" who are Lucy's family, paint a loving portrait of their favorite feline's adventures as she, in her dreaded red bag, goes to the Guys' country house for the weekend. Hilarious, charming, and beautifully illustrated, this book is a childrens' book but it'll appeal to anyone who loves cats, and appreciates loving families of all kinds. My partner and I just lost our 20 year old calico, Calliope, so this book was especially meaningful and touching for us! More of Lucy's adventures, please, Guys!

Macworld Mac & Power Mac Secrets

A "must-have" for the serious and not so serious Mac hack.
I've been working exclusively on the Mac for nearly seven years, yet each chapter of this book unlocked another great time saver or just plain fun secret! It also demystifies technically cryptic computer jargon. It's a logically structured, easy read. Chapters cover the basics to the advanced. Macintosh unraveled from memory to modem! The included CD-ROM contains very useful items such as ResEdit and File Buddy, that allow you to roll up your sleeves and dig around inside your programs. A true treat from beginning to end! I can't wait to read their next edition

A great Macintosh book for all levels of users
This book, written by two of Macworld magazine's top authors,is extremely informative. It is written not only for thefirst-time user of Macintosh computers, but also for the Mac guru. Everything it talks of finishes with at least 2 or 3 pages of extremely useful tips. The only flaw found in this book was the fact that by the time the book is on the shelf, some information is out of date. Also, some users of outdated technology will find the tips to be only for the newer systems. Of course, the CD-ROM included has much of the info for the older user.

As good as it gets!
As the owner of a Mac computer company this is one book I love to have on hand. It just doesn't get any better! Never again will someone come into my store thinking they know something I don't. It's the best book for computers I've bought in years

Manual of Prayers - A truly wonderful book
After purchasing the Manual of Prayers, I found my prayer life had greatly improved. I have been greatly blessed by it. It comes leather bound in 2 colors, black and burgundy. It was such a blessing fort me that I had to get one for a friend. It is good for those who have a hard time praying. It makes it easier to start a prayer or gives one ideas on how to pray. It is a wonderful book that is nothing short of priceless.

A needed prayer book for priests and all Catholics
As a priest recently returned from Rome after two years of graduate study at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum), who lived and prayed at the Pontifical North American College Casa Santa Maria, I can recommend no finer book of prayers for priests and lay Catholics.

Prayer is essential in the life of every person. Catholics have read the Scriptures, worshipped God in the sacrifice of the Mass, prayed the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross, used the psalms to pray and sing, and have used many other prayer forms for nearly 2000 years. Prayer is essential!

The Manual of Prayers continues this tradition. The need to bring forth from our storehouse the greatest of Catholic treasures combines with the need to compose beautiful prayers suited for today. The depth and scope of its scholarship, its fidelity to the faith, and the beauty of its prayers fill the need today for a prayer book in the Catholic tradition. Beautifully presented, made to last, portable and complete, the Manual of Prayers is one to treasure and use every day of one's life.

The most wonderful and complete prayer book ever!
My priest introduced me to this prayer book. As a cradle catholic of 40 plus years I am truly blessed to own a copy. It contains basic Catholic prayers, novenas, prayers for various needs and also has the Latin form of prayers. It is beautifully bound in black leather, gilded page edges, 2 ribbon markers, and a handy case to keep it in. It is truly heirloom quality. Will make a great gift for cradle catholics as well as converts. Originally written for the students of the Pontifical North American College. A must have for all Catholics.

Mastering Atmosphere & Mood in Watercolor: The Critical Ingredients That Turn Paintings into Art

buy this book
The approach that Mr. Joseph Zbukvic uses in his book is fascinating. For me, he takes the mystery out of painting watercolor and breaks it down into a more understandable approach. What I like about it is that he explains the different consistencies that paint should be when applied to the paper. His consistency of paint is described as: tea, coffee, milk, cream and butter. The dampness of paper is described as: dry, damp, moist, and wet. He ties these ideas together by using a concept of a clock. The concept of a clock is used to explain when and how paper and paint should be used together. An example of one of his demonstrations: laying in the first background wash to paper, the paper is dry and the paint is in the consistency of tea. His demonstrations in the book are clear and easy to understand especially with this "clock" method. He also writes very well and it is an enjoyable read. I love the way he paints and the price of the book alone is worth just looking at his paintings.

Stunning effects by manipulating the amount of moisture
The example paintings in Joseph Zbukvic's "Mastering Atmosphere and Mood" are stunning. By manipulating the amount of moisture ON the paper and IN the wash of paint, Zbuvic creates strong contrast between ethereal washes and densely painting architectural or landscape elements.

Zbuvic uses a device he calls a clock, which consists of a circle divided into wedges; the left side gauging the amount of water on the paper (from shiny wet to bone dry) and the right side gauging the amount of water mixed into the paint, from weak "tea" to "butter" or thick paint. This is rather original, but it does communicate an awareness of the moisture levels in both paint and paper to the artist. One example painting that really stands out is a rainy scene of downtown Melbourne, Australia. The street is lightly washed to allow the paper beneath to create the white shine of a wet street; the buildings and headlight reflections are painted more densely to provide either solidity (the building) or glow (the headlights.)

Most books on watercolor demonstrate a layered method of washes followed by glazes (paint over paint.) The end result can often be muddy for beginners in watercolor. This method is quite different in how it describes laying down washes and glazes, and can help the watercolorist achieve transparent atmosphere effects by paying attention to the water. If you've run into a brick wall with your current method of painting, this might be a great book to give a boost to your technique.

ESSENTIAL
I think this book is essential for one trying get a handle on this sometimes frustrating medium. One of the critical parts in watercolor painting is judging the amount of water in the paper and on the brush to get the effect one seeks. It's a tricky process but one which this friendly book makes understandable and attainable. I've been painting for 25 years and have bought scores of books on the subject, finding something useful to nearly all of them. But this book, along with two others, I consider to be MUSTS. The others are Robert Lovett's "The Art of Designing Watercolors" and Tony Couch's "Watercolor: You Can Do It."

The BEST Book EVER on AutoLISP Programming !!!!
I did not need any other book on AutoLISP programming - This book went with me anywhere I did - the toilet , my bed , my computer desk. It DID NOT teach DCL programming so I bought another (by Christian Immler). If you want to see what I used AutoLISP for - check the website mentioned below. If you can get the book it - DO IT ...

This book was the best AutoLisp reference that I ever owned
Too bad this book is out of print. I was impressed by the content, the ease of looking items up, and the examples. I wish the book had been updated for Rev. 13 of AutoCad. If you have Amazon try and locate a copy for you and they find one, consider yourself a luck programmer.

excellent

Authentic New Orleans
I picked up this book at the airport as I was leaving New Orleans. I had tried many of the dishes at restaurants in the city, then recreated them with the cookbook at home. The instructions are easy to follow, and the recipes are very much like what I had in New Orleans. My family wants me to make every recipe in the book.

I have a happy hubby !
Oh my goodness ! Have you ever wanted to cook down home creole dishes ? If so, this is the book for you. Simple instuctions and obtainable ingredients. I just made the Seafood Gumbo and it is out of this world. (Don't forget to make it the day before ;) The Chocolate Eclairs are to die for and easy to make. This little book is a must have for every good cook and my guys love every recipe. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. Buy it ! Buy one for a friend. A wonderful cookbook.

Excellent recipes clearly explained
This is one of the finest cookbooks I've used and definitely the best I've seen with regards to New Orleans cuisine. The recipes rarely require anything extraordinary and substitutes are suggested in those rare cases where required. In addition, she adds pronunciations which are often helpful for those of us who are creloe deprived.

Ms. McKee has done a fantastic job bringing the recipes to life. I could smell the fresh pralines cooling in her kitchen and couldn't wait to make a batch of my own. If you love Southern cooking, this small book will be a wonderful guide.

The Lords of Greenwich
Published in Paperback by Michelle Pub Co (April, 2003)
Author: Joseph Bentivegna
Amazon base price: $15.00
Average review score:

A penetrating look at the dark underbelly of greed
Dr Bentivegna has written an at-times hilarious and topical, but also frightening and compelling page-turner about greed, political shenanigans, medical malfeasance and the class system in "Lords of Greenwich." The book propels you into the byzantine political realities of Connecticut state politics, the gaming (jai-alai) industry, a fall from grace, and the consequences of greed, from the angle of a physician. A remarkable cast of characters are fleshed out, and at the same time, clever thoughts and ideas are scattered throughout the book to keep you laughing and guessing at how a down-on-his luck mechanic could win at gambling on games of jai-alai. The only thing that made this book not reach five stars was a less than credible resolution to the whole story, which required a fair amount of medical legerdemain to explicate to the non-subspecialist in corneal surgery the unbelievable (but almost possible) way the scam worked. Notwithstanding that, it was still a real good read.

This is one great book!
The Lords of Greenwich is one of the best books that I have read in many years. It is an exciting, fast-paced novel that delves into the dark connections among the worlds of sports, politics, and medicine. Extremely well written, alternately gripping and hilarious. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

A very good book
The Lords of Greenwich is a twofer - both a delightful political novel and a fascinating mystery. Despite the fact that the book is presented as a mystery, I found the political novel to be every bit as compelling as the mystery storyline.

Dr. Bentivegna's insider knowledge of electoral politics gives a realistic edge to his accounts of the behind-the-scenes machinations of campaign managers. (Warning for those who think politics is a noble endeavor: This novel is bound to depress you.) The tale of a gubernatorial election in its last weeks is compelling. The on-the-money characterizations of the people who interact within a campaign framework are by turns humorous and caustic, giving one the sense that they spring from reality.

Parallel to the political novel is a well-crafted mystery. How did the gambling scam work? Who killed the ring-leader, and how did he die? When would the world of politics intersect with the world of thuggery? All these questions keep the reader turning pages until the very end of an eminently satisfying first novel. Do it again, Doc!
