The Title Tells the Story
This book is truly aimed at Latter-Day Saints in order to assist them with understanding their faith and religion. It is a text that enables the reader to comprehend where, someone who questions their beliefs, stands. Many Latter-Day Saints seem afraid to answer "gospel questions" due to the fact that they do not understand just where the question is coming from... critical or curious. This book enpowers the reader to rise to the occasssion and to surmount the situation. This is not done to discourage any who are seeking infromation but to truly answer their questions so that they feel that they the information they requested.

The Sweet Science.

A Must-Read
Sportswriting is generally shlock. But A.J. Liebling was no sportswriter. Perhaps the finest reporter ever, certainly one of The New Yorker's shining lights, Liebling wrote with equal grace on the swaggering cons of Broadway, his misspent youth in pre-war Paris, blood pooled in a landing craft off Omaha Beach, just about anything that caught his sharp eye and florid pen. And because Liebling wrote what he loved, he also wrote boxing. Whether he was at an obscure club fight or a marquee bout, Liebling never saw his subjects as muscled automata. His boxers were people, every fight a story, and the stories collected in the Sweet Science form a classic work of sport that no cigar-chewing sports hack ever tossed on a wire.

Amy Foster
For anyone who loves the beauty and grace of this fine film this makes a wonderful companion. It includes the screenplay, an interview with director Beeban Kidron, stills from the film and, of course, the origional short story by Joseph Conrad.

I have never been a huge Conrad fan and reading this short story after seeing the beautiful film it inspired was a reminder why. Though it obviously is literature, it is plauged by Conrad's choice of Kennedy to relate the tale. Whereas Fitzgerald found that grace and beauty in seemingly sketchy or even trivial people and situations Conrad is either unwilling or unable to do so. It reads as though someone gave a good writer a beautiful romantic tragedy to write and then had them write it without any love or sentiment. Conrad's "Amy Foster" leaves you cold.

Tom Willocks, who does love Conrad, ran into this problem while writing the screenplay. Only when he realized everything was askew in Conrad's origional story because Kennedy's perspective was tainted was he able to turn the story inside out and find the vestiges of love and romance Conrad had omitted.

It is because of Willocks's wonderful screenplay and Beeban Kidron's handling of it that this is one of those rare instances where the film is better than its origional source. The film has the grace and beauty of fine literature because screenwriter Tom Willocks gave it such. Reading the screenplay will make you appreciate just what a difficult task such an adaptation is and how it is an art form all its own.

One of my favorite films is 'Plenty' with Meryl Streep and I was delighted to find that Fred Schepisi, the director of that film, was chosen to interview Beeban Kidron about the making of 'Swept From the Sea.' The 21 questions Schepisi asks and Kidron's responses are invaluable to anyone who loves this exquisitely beautiful work of art. There are little gems and insights into the making of the film you will enjoy immensely.

There are some nice stills to look at and as a bonus the entire credits for the film are listed as well. If you haven't seen this spare and lovely film yet you are missing out. If you have seen it you'll definitely want to own this as an addition to the film.

"It struck me that Amy Foster was one of the greatest love stories ever told, except that the love story itself had been left out."
Tom Willocks (screenwriter)

The Best Book on Symmetry
This is the most wonderful and facinating book on symmetry I have ever read! Everyone who applies symmetry concept should read it. There are many many books on symmetry. Many of them simply treated symmetry as a mathematical attribute. Joe Rosen is the first one firmly treated symmetry as a property of a system (very similar to a thermodynamic properties). The author has rediscovered the symmetry principle (Effect is more symmetric than cause), as some of the most important literature was published 90 years ago and not in English. I recommended many colleagues to read it. You will like it! Shu-Kun Lin, PhD http://mdpi.org/lin.htm

Synagogue Song in America

$56 asked for used copy outrageous, but book's worth it!
....

Noted author and scholar Rabbi Jacob Neusner wrote, "this book brings to synagogue song the discipline of the musician, the learning of the scholar, but most important, the aesthetic sense of the pious person who serves God in the beauty of holiness. Teaching us what has been and what can be, Levine promises to turn what is into something better:musically a service to God through aesthetic beauty consonant with the musical tradition of Judaism. A book of enormous value to the life of Judaism today."

In addition to giving Jews everywhere a key to unlock the secrets of their traditional chant, the book is also a practical guide to one branch of a universal musical tradition: liturgical chant. It's a must read for anyone interested in what makes the cantorial art so compelling to listeners and so important to worship.

Messages from a cosmic trickster?
Is there more to interpreting reality than just the perceptions of your five senses? Is there indeed a "cosmic trickster" who decides to send you signals with irregular patterns about your own life?
In this fascinating book it is a reevaluation of older principles (the ancient Greek belief about lower and higher destiny for one) connected with modern psychology (C.Jung primarily) that leads to a mesmerising study of the phenomenon of synchronicities: events that we today tend to describe as "incredible coincidences" or dejavues without actually realising that there could be a meaning, a "code", which can reveal to us either things about to happen or can function as warnings about the future, or even, "messages" about ourselves and what we can do to alter the "higher destiny" which is the part of fate we actually can manipulate.

In the hi-tech, fast paced and materialistic modern world all this may sound like another book for "weirdos", but it can't be dismissed as others in its genre exactly because synchronicities are something mostly everyone notices at one point of life or another, and the more aware you are about them the more apparent they become.
Being a natural sceptic the first time i picked up this book i abandoned it after only being 1/3 into it becuase i felt it wasn't compatible with my own personal system of beliefs and understanding. It was only after i started noticing some startling synchronicities myself that i read it (through this time) again , only to realise that there's way more to synchronicities than, well, meets not only the eye but any of our senses.
I tend to think that the "truth" (whatever that may be) is not only something one can "learn" but it's also something one can feel and i consider both processes equally important.

The author divides synchronicities into 17 categories and studies them providing in the process numerous truly incredible examples about them. At certain parts of the book it's the examples themselves that steal the show and you may find yourself recognising situations that are in one way or the other familiar to you but you hadn't paid attention when they happened. Attention is of primary importance as you will find out if you go ahead and read it. Frank Joseph attempts to find what most of us would call a "rational explanation" about synchronicities. He's never dogmatic (to his credit) about his own thoughts and his book reads like a conversation with the reader making it one definite "cantputdowner".
In the end what he proposes is essentialy that the reader examines this his/herself and explain it in his/her terms. It doesnt actually matter how one decides to explain synchronicities he muses, what matters is that there is a different dimension of reality present for everyone waiting to be explored, discovered and deciphered.
Put this book in your bag of valuable tools.

Mystery lovers and fans of old Hollywood will love these
These radio episodes have an effective way of keeping the listener at the edge of their seat. Lucille Ball's performance was no exception. Here, she comes out of the ditsy housewife roles she's so famous for and plays a conniving seducing witch who will stop at nothing to get her way. I highly recommend listening to these with the lights turned off or down low.
