Interesting, but very brief
Although this friendly paperback is about 250 pages, 120 of these are just summaries of the bills he worked on.

This was a nice reference about Lieberman when he was first announced to be Gore's choice in 2000 for running mate, but now the world needs to see a more in-depth portrait of him. Still, this book is interesting in that it gives us a brief idea of Lieberman's strong moral standards and integrity.

Not the best
Joseph T. Robinson had an interesting career, being elected to Congress in 1902, elected Governor of Arkansas in 1912, in 1913 elected by the Legislature to succeed Jeff Davis (who is the subject of a really outstanding biography: The Wild Ass of the Ozarks: Jeff Davis and the Wocial Basis of Southern Politics, by Raymond Arsenault), and served in the Senate till his sudden death on July 14, 1937, having been the vice-presidential candidate on Al Smith's ticket in 1928. While the early chapters of this book, telling of Robinson's early years and his rise in Arkansas politics are interesting, the account of his Senate years is pedestrian and uninterestingly written. The author has a superficial grasp of the times in which Robinson lived, and while the book is well-footnoted and has a good bibliography, the book is actually a published thesis and was a disappointment to me. I have read a lot of senatorial biographies and must rate this one of the poorer ones.

A Compromise
If you seen the work of Joseph Cornell before and loved it then you will find much to learn from in this book. But, I'm not sure readers encountering Cornell for the first time through this book will be won over. The detailed text by McShine is thorough, covering his life, his surrealist box constructions, collages and cinema. A huge amount of his work is reproduced, and an extensive bibliography are included. However, most of the plates are in black and white, with only a handful of colour photographs of his work. Moreover, the photographs of his work lack depth, so the three-dimensional tactile qualities of his enigmatic box constructions are lost. Perhaps these qualities would be difficult to convey in any photographs. So, it is not the perfect Joseph Cornell book. But the writing is interesting and I still loved looking at the less-than-ideal reproductions of his work.

OUT OF PRINT
Here is another travesty...Joseph Mankiewicz was one of the great directors, but studies on his life and work fall way behind his colleagues...only one book is in print that shows how Mank directed: see A THINKER'S DAMN by William Russo which details the making of The Quiet American in Saigon in 1957.

This book was a typical biography, good for reports and whatnot, it has some of Turner's Paintings, and it has a lot of information.

A bit confusing!
Joseph Stella's Symbolism is a good introduction into the work of Joseph Stella: however, not being a fan of modern art, I found the paintins to be a bit confusing.

Hero of Both Worlds
An interesting biography of Lafayette, the young French nobleman who served with Washington during the American Revolution and then went back to France to help usher in the French Revolution. A long life spent extolling the virtues of liberty, Lafayette is portrayed in the book as a generous man who seeked fame only. When presented with a chance to actually take action and change the course of history, he would retreat and allow others to make the decisive actions of the time.

The author is not particularly kind to the Lafayette and does not hestiate to point out his flaws. However, the writing is well done. The only major problem I have with the book regards referring to many major historical characters without giving us some background before they are introduced. For example, many of the leaders of the French Revolution are referred to without any explanation of their politics. The author assumed a fairly wide understanding of the various personalities. I would have preferred a little more exposition.

Enjoyed this book
This book is an easy read. There are really two stories told: Marland's biography, and also, an history of early economic development in the northern part of the young state of Oklahoma. In a few chapters you will read about geology, Native American tribes, seizure of Indian lands in the "Cherokee Strip", early oilmen, New York bankers, the roaring 1920's and the Great Depression. They all influenced Marland's career as an oilman. The author's (often acerbic) opinions about persons and events are freely given throughout his book.

The never ending unfinished novel
While I am not really a Fitzgerald fan I am not sure how relyable this review is, but I had to read the book for a class. I think if you like his style the book is good, and many say that it would have been his best work had he been able to finish it. Because there is no ending, and the plot is not that enticing you really must read the book for readings sake and not to get a great adventure from it. If you have the time check it out and hopefuly it will do more for you then me, but otherwise this would not be my first choice of books.

The Loyalist Mind: Joseph Galloway and the American Revolution
Published in Hardcover by Pennsylvania State Univ Pr (Txt) (December, 1977)
Author: John E. Ferling

Somewhat Dull and Inconclusive
This book paints a decent protrait of Galloway in the years before, during and after the American Revolution. However, Freling does not offer his own opinion of Galloway's historical significance. Overall, a decent book, but a bit tedious at times.
