Gorgeous Food!
This book has pictures for almost ALL the recipes( in full color)! I think this helps alot. It make you WANT to cook the dishes...and it lets you know if yours looks right. I am a beginning cook and so I found this book a little more difficult than the others. The instructions are VERY short and CLEAR, but they assume prior knowledge. I personally don't know how to make a bechamel sauce yet, or garam masala, or ras el hanout (the recipes for these are not in the book, but you need them to make some of the dishes)...to name a few things...but other than that (and the fact that some of the ingredients aren't so easy to find) the book is great! I like how the author gives variations/substitute ingredients for some of the dishes. They taste good, too (except if you substitue beef for lamb in the stuffed bell peppers, add more spices! or else it's bland...more of my inexperience, I guess...).

What the experts say...
"...worth owning and reading: the text is valuable, the illustrations are magnificent, and the production overall is excellent. The Mediterranean Diet will enrich the library of any educated person, not only those with medical backgrounds or Mediterranean roots...The book presents the health effects of diet with a simplicity that does not seriously compromise scientific accuracy, and it treats the various Mediterranean cultures with respect..." Mel Bay's Favorite Hymns for Classical Guitar

A Good Resource for Sacred Guitar Music
As stated in the preface, "all transcriptions were derived from the best-known versions of the hymns." This collection of hymns and songs of praise are carefully noted with fingerings and are easy enough for late beginning - to early intermediate guitarists, since since much of the musical notation is in the first position. Both traditional and contemporary pieces are included in this good selection of familiar sacred music.

Memory Distortion: How Minds, Brains, and Societies Reconstruct the Past

Good Interdisciplinary Look at Memory Breakdown
Memory is a central issue for so much of human life - whether it be questions of identity, autobiography, or belief. In this volume, edited by the expert on memory and belief Daniel Schacter of Harvard, we have an innovative interdisciplinary examination into the question of memory, why it fails, and what happens when it does.

The volume is divided into the following sections by discpline: 1) Cognitive Perspectives, 2) Psychiatric and Psychopathological Perspectives, 3) Neurophyschological Perspectives, 4) Neurobiological Perspectives, 5) Sociocultural Perspectives, 6)Concluding Reflections.

The articles, each by a different contributor, are not the easiest to jump into, especially for those without a scientific background. In fact, the overall emphasis is very much on science with the social sciences rather underrepresented (in my opinion). This is the reason why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. However, those with a scientific inclination, yet also philosophical or social science inclinations towards questions of identity, autobiography, belief and fantasy will find this book of great interest. I would advise you to also look at the much more recent volume (2000) by Schacter entitled 'Memory, the Brain and Belief', which may in fact be more up to date.

Mesmerism: The Discovery of Animal Magnetism (1779); A New Translation
Published in Paperback by Holmes Pub Group (November, 1997)
Authors: Franz A. Mesmer and Joseph Bouleur
Amazon base price: $7.95

Very interesting book- pretty short though
This book or pamphlet describes the circumstances surrounding the discoveries of Mesmer. It is interesting reading, in that it gives a brief overview of the findings of someone that used a scientific approach to independently arrive at conclusions that coincide with Eatern philosophy. It is enough to wet my apetite for more information about Anton Mesmer.

Microprocessor handbook

Excellent introduction to microprocessors
The Microprocessor Handbook is an excellent survey of what might now seem to be outdated microprocessors, but it is, in fact, a very good introduction to understanding microprocessors in general. Mr. Greenfield covers most of the major CPU's of the time, including Intel, Motorola, Zilog and others, as well as support chips. If you are really looking to understand how microprocessors really work, and are familiar with digital electronics, this is a great place to start

Middle Clash: The Issues Which Will to the Creation of a Successful Third Party in the 21st Century
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (December, 2000)
Authors: Martin M. Shinedling and Joseph K. Miller
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

a refreshing change
Dr. Shinedling's work offers a refreshing view of politics, and an alternative for those who are sick of politics as usual. His hypothesis is that neither major party advocates for the middle class, and therefore, we should not reelect any incumbent until the politicians start to work for the middle class. Anyone that is interested in politics at large and is open minded would enjoy this book simply for the refreshing point of view Dr. Shinedling has.

worthwhile
Milton Babbitt is the most intelligent and articulate of the serialist propagandists. He is very often dead wrong, but he is always worthwhile to read. His monographs published in "The Journal of Music Theory" and elsewhere have been very influential, but as far as I know they have never been collected in book form. This is a valuable compendium of his thought. The last lecture reprises the argument of his notorious "Who Cares If You Listen?" article. For a reprint of the original article and an apposite rebuttal, see "Music in the Western World: A History in Documents" edited by Piero Weiss and Richard F. Taruskin.

I also recommend (very much) PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.

High praise from a College
This book was recommended to me by a college counselor who has high praise for the authors. If I may paraphrase: The book is eloquently written, the format is very well put together and usable. The authors discuss the aversion to math that has a long history purpetuated in American schools: mathematics and real world rationale continue to be divided by an abyss. One important fact pointed out by the academic counselor is that the book is written by PhD. Mathematicians, which seems to be the only way to get math departments interested in trying new programs. I look forward to using this book.
