Catch-22
Joseph Heller's work, Catch-22, is an unequivocal satire on postmodern American life, with messages of dissident revolt that were well suited to the decade in which it appears. Heller is almost systematic in the issues he touches: the frustration of the individual up against powerful and faceless bureaucracies; the anticommunist purges of the Cold War and its smug hypocrisies; and strong antiwar issues that dominated postmodern America. In Heller's work, escaping these traps and inconsistencies of government is essential in the pursuit of moral and self-preservation. After all, "The enemy," as Yossarian puts it, "is anybody who's going to get you killed, no matter which side he's on." (Joseph Heller)

THE BEST NOVEL I HAVE EVER READ!
That about says it all. I had no idea what to expect when I picked up Heller's masterpiece. I was left breathless with my outlook on life completely thrown for a loop. No book has ever made me think and reevaluate as this one did. A perfect novel - it makes you laugh, it makes you sad, it makes you think and it stays with you. I reread Catch-22 regularly.

Catch 22
Catch 22 is like no other novel. It has its own rationale its own extraordinary character. It moves back and forth through OUR conception of time. The humor and overallvitality and power of the novel create the master piece that is a catch 22.

Unimaginable Reality
I couldn't stop reading this book. I was crying. I wanted to shout, to yell, to kick, to k.... I couldn't avoid the thought that if I was put in this hell, probably I wouldn't survive it.

Born in Israel, I've learned a lot about the Holocaust but never before I felt the horror so strong. For example, Noami's description of the Nazis humiliating her grandparents shocked me stronger than all the many times I watched pictures of the Nazis cutting a Rabbi's sidecurls (PEYOT) hair and beard.

The part telling how in the US every one refused to hear Noami's story made it even more terrible and hard to comprehand.

I wanted to thank you Noami for telling your story which I promise to tell to my children.

A Real Page Turner - I Couldn't Put it Down!
This is one of the best books I have ever read - period. The author is a remarkable writer, and I can't understand why this book isn't number one on the best-seller list. It should be; it is truly that good. I felt like I was there. I got the book from the library, but I'm going to buy one for each of my adult children to read. No book or movie about the holocaust has touched me as much as this one, and I want the author, Naomi Samson, to know that this Irish Catholic and his family will never forget - because of her book. We will never forget.

Hide - Naomi Samson
This is an emotional, engaging account of a girl's survival of the Holocaust. I started reading this book and could not put it down until I had finished reading it. It is as good if not better than any other personal account of Holocaust survival, including Night by Elie Wiesel. I can not say enough good things about this book. Read it. If you are open to its messages, it will change you.

A continuation of a great story
The Home follows Molly as she adjusts to life in the home of Joseph (Honey) and Mary (Mother Mary) Bonsall. Her trials are funny and all cat owners/lovers can relate to her antics, and those of the other cats in the Home. Great reading for children and adults.

A Series for Children, Adults, and Pets
After reading both Molly and The Home, I've been waiting eagerly to pounce on the next in the series, Outside. Why do we have to wait soooo long when we know it will be sooo good! In this era of violence, horror, and graphic representations of real life, Joseph Bonsall's writing ensures us that there are still people in this world who will write quality, loving, touching literature for us to read to our children (and our cats)! My niece loves the illustrations, and we both found ourselves saying, "Don't go out that door!" These books are a must for any pet lover, especially those who love cats, their mischieviousness, and the love they show humans. When I read these books, my cat is in my lap, purring away . . . now if only Outside would come inside to my bookstore before October . . .

Touches the adventurous and playful spirit in us all.
All of what I stated in my review of the first book continues to hold true for this one. It maintains its appeal while not only challenging but also has included a moral. This is all done with an unique writing style that holds the interest of any age and also touches its audience at many different levels. Each time I share this something new surfaces! I am axiously awaiting the 3rd in the series titled the OUTSIDE. Do yourself and those you care for a favor and don't miss a single one of the books in this series.

Comprehensive & well-illustrated guide for Hoppy collectors
This is the book. Whether you are a serious Hoppy collector, a novice beginner, or simply a fan of one of the greatest western character heroes ever, this book is a must. Extremely well written and organized it is a trip down memory lane. William Boyd, who played Hoppy, was one of the first cowboy stars who was also a marketing genius. This book shows why. This beautifully illustrated price guide encompasses the myriad of Hoppy collectibles that swept not only the U.S. but the world in the 1950s. Every kid wanted to be like Hoppy and as this price guide shows a trip to the store could fulfill that fantasy. You do not have to be a collector to enjoy this book. It will rekindle memories of the things you had as a child and might still have in your attic. To the collector this is an invaluable tool to assist you in evaluating what you have and what to search for. Well done Joe!

Book is excellent resource for beginning collectors.
Like many fans of Hopalong Cassidy I had toys and other items connected with the TV show collecting dust in my attic. I didn't realize how many Hoppy souveneirs I could collect. This book gave me price ranges but it also brought back some great memories with its detailed pictures and descriptions. Clearly this author knows his subject. I can't wait to increase my collection.

A superb labor of love for the Hoppy collector!
I am happy to state that I have added Joe Caro's "Hopalong Cassidy Collectibles" to my library. It is worth every penny! As a writer, I can fully appreciate the hard work that went into this study - a must for every serious collector of Hoppy material as well as the novice who wants to know originals, reproductions and items that existed only in someone's "mind". A wonderful and colorful display gauranteed to bring out even the most "shy kid" back to when America was a gentler nation and everyone looked up to Hoppy - youngsters and adults and how we all wanted a Hoppy collectibles - whether it was a flashlight or a holster set! The reading is easy, the color photos dazzling and the market values makes the cost of this book minuscule compared to knowing what the curent values of these wonderful collectibles bring today! Joe Caro is to be congratulated for his exhaustive effort to make us smile again as we get re-acquainted with our he! ro - Hoppy! There is one drawback: Careful, pardners, it'll turn you into a kid again! Job well done!

Reality is often cruel--how else would we know love?
Please see my review of this book listed under the original French title "Les Cavaliers". The true meaning of this story is discussed there, without revealing the details of its triumphant, ending---just recall that every triumph has its price, and the price may not seem fair to some people. The spirit of Northern Afghanistan is represented in this tale, perhaps presaging events of this most surprising new century. While America still recovers from the horror of the World Trade Center bombing, and politicians discuss their intended actions and threaten each other, read the story of a man who relies on himself, rather than on strangers, eventually finds support and friendship, and ultimately, healing and success. The world is at times, a savage and lonely place, with no guarantees of success. This book may help you deal with it.

A fearful tale of cruelty, arrogance, ordeal, and ego.
A unique look at the stubborn inner self, and self-punishment. And a revealing view of humankind.

A proud and savage prince has been trained all his life to win a game that goes beyond a game. He is an outstanding athlete, his father raises outstanding horses, and he and his horse have been groomed and trained to win. Nothing less.

This is the tale of a struggle to deny reality. It is a painful, frightening, revealing, gripping story, and nearly impossible to put down. I have never forgotten it, though I read it many years ago, and I doubt anyone else could forget it either.

This book provides you with the real meaning of life.
Even if life is different in each country, men are the same. This book, which takes place in Afghanistan, tells you the story of a journey, the journey of mankind on earth. Through a fairy tale, Kessel (as TimO'Brien does) finds out the real meaning of life... what more could you expect from a book?

Doctors Prefer Dinner Meetings For Learning
All the studies available show that MD's prefer peer forums and meetings over sales rep presentations. I recently read a report that showed that 65% of physicians surveyed preferred MD forums over sales rep visits.
As sales manager for a pharmaceutical company, I made the decision to purchase "How To Conduct Doctor Dinner Meetings," for all of my district managers and sales reps.
This book provides all of the latest AMA/PhRMA/FDA Guidelines, the "How To" of contacting physicians and other healthcare to set up the meetings.
This is a great book and it is standard issue to all of my sales reps.

This Book Cost Me Nothing!
This is a great book on how to conduct doctor dinner meetings, but what makes it even greater is that it was essentially free! After I bought the book, I went to their website listed in the book, downloaded the forms for a 360 Degree Selling Consultant sales planning tool, and faxed them to the publisher. Within twenty four hours I received a free 360 Degree Sales Strategy Report on one of my doctors. The report is valued at twenty five dollars, so the book cost me nothing. I have never seen any other selling book make such an offer.

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Dinner Meetings
This book covers everything you need to know about doctor dinner meetings, from pre-meeting planning to post meeting follow-up activities.

This book touched both my heart and soul!
This book touched both my heart and soul. I really had a chill every time I stuck my nose in this book! Danielle Vargo is not only a great writer but an excellent person! I think she really got her readers atention with her book. I sugest, if you love books that really get you deep down under, then, beleive me, you will love this book! I know I did!!

Content inspirational and rewarding.
"Immortal Eyes" is a well described life journey that from the beginning exhibited an influential sequence of events that capture the essence of a heart-fulfilled family living the "story" of life. The story progressively convinces a reader that we are all a significant part of each other beyond everyday life. Overall, the content and "real life" story line is easy to read without neglecting a reader's curiousity of details that are an intricate part of understanding the atmosphere adherent to a family that succeed in the "game of life". I'm certain "Immortal Eyes" will prevail as a best seller.

unforgetable
This review has been a long time in coming. I had thought I'd already done one but, nope, no I had not. My apology to the author of this wonderful, inspirational book.

I believe that I know my real reason for convincing myself that I'd done the review. This book encompasses so much, emotional, inspirational, spiritual, that it would be nearly impossible for anyone to put it into words. I may have said this before about other titles but I do not know if I've ever been this touched, down to my core, by anything I've ever read.

It may seem like a lot of pages but Immortal Eyes reads as if it had half as many. It reads like a spiritual awakening; lasting a lifetime yet over in the blink of an eye.

The plot? Well, the back cover says it the best.

"WHY ME? WHY NOT? Believe and become part of an incredible journey."

Ingersoll the Magnificent

Yes, Magnificent
This is one of the best books I have read. Ingersoll was one of the most courageous and eloquent spokesmen for Reason. He honored nature, science and liberty and condemned superstition, bigotry, slavery, religious intolerance and worthless ritual in a time when it took great courage to be outspoken. His words have even greater meaning today when the evils of religious fundamentalism and fanaticism have again reared their ugly head. This book condenses much of his writings in an organised and eloquent way. If it were required reading I think it would seriously undermine the religious convictions of many Americans. I urge everyone to familiarize themselves with Ingersoll, the magnificent!

Ingersoll Proved Freethought is Positive
I had finally sat down to read the Bible when I picked up a copy of Ingersoll the Magnificent. I can tell you the latter was the only book I finished. The Bible shocked me with its ignorance and cruelty. Ingersoll impressed me with his wit and principles (charity, respect, intellectual integrity, hope, and honesty.) There are so many gems of wisdom. Here are but a few: "I admit that reason is a small and feeble flame, a flickering torch by stumblers carried in the starless night, -- blown and flared by passion's storm, -- and yet it is the only light. Extinguish that and nought remains." "All that is necessary, as it seems to me, to convince any reasonable person that the bible is simply and purely of human invention -- of barbarian invention -- is to read it." "It is a great pleasure to drive the fiend of fear out of the hearts of men, women and children. It is a positive joy to put out the fires of hell." "Honest men do not pretend to know...they admit their ignorance, and they say, 'We don't know.'" Reading Ingersoll made me want to meet people like him and directly to meeting Madalyn Murray O'Hair. They certainly had their differences, but both stood for high ideals and wanted humankind to be better.

A must read for all Americans.
It's funny that in the 21st century most Americans have forgotten the lost American tradition of Free Thinking. Robert G. Ingersoll was one the greatest free thinkers and one of the greatest Americans in our history. This is a tremendous collections of his thoughts on the nonsense on christianity and the seperation of church and state. You have to love a politician who had the guts to stand up and say "Christianity has made more lunatics than it ever provided asylums for." Here is the opposing view to those who believe this is a "christian nation."

Bill Peet is great!
My son was introduced to Bill Peet in another book "Kermit the Hermit" and we really enjoy reading his stories. Our house is now going through a dragon phase and Bill Peet is coming through again. The grass eating dragon with a price on his head is a charming story and my son loves it. It's also a fun book for Mommy to read.

A wonderful imaginative tale
I just picked up this book secondhand and it is my first introduction to Bill Peet and I am sure to get more of his books! It reminds me of an old fashioned fairy tale with kings, dragons and knights and is a fun way to introduce my 3 year old to these "magic" concepts. It is a nice story with charming pictures - Droofus gets separated from the other dragons and becomes a kind, grass eating dragon. The king wants his head as a trophy and puts out a big reward. Droofus gets discovered by a young boy who decides Droofus must be a good dragon since he did not hurt the lamb and so the boy does not betray Droofus. Later Droofus gets a chance to repay the boy by helping on the farm. Eventually he does get discovered by the king and the knights, but the boy comes up with a way for the king to have Droofus's head without chopping it off! A sweet tale with lots of little lessons about kindness tucked in.

My favorite from childhood
I read this when I was just a kid (maybe 1st or 2nd grade), but it was one of a handful of stories I never forgot -- except for the title. When I finally had kids, I began looking for it and luckily came across it searching book-by-book at a store. It's better than I remember -- both the writing and the illustrations. It's highly recommended, and not just by me, but my 3 year old!

and 1/2 stars
Grady Service is a loner which extends back to his childhood days. His father was a conversation Officer who spent many hours away home which had Grady raising himself. When the bottle finally catches with his father and he dies on the job, Grady doesn't't shed a tear and heads off to Vietnam. Upon coming back
home a man who left as a boy, he decides to follow in his father's footsteps. Not because he wants to honor his father's memory but because he has love of the land that is close to idolization. As the winter snow melts and summer comes to this remote part of the country so do tourists and problems. Grady has a hard time following rules and obeying orders. You could even say he is a Type A personality in both his professional and personal life. As his beloved sanctuary is being invaded by people who are hell bent on destroying the pristine land for money he goes beyond the call of duty to save it. He does his everyday job of patrolling the area, writing tickets for minor violations and protecting wildlife. He also acts a detective
trying to solve a baffling case of why so many are interested in this lonely piece of land. The reader who has good deductive skills will figure out what everyone is hunting for and will even root for Grady to protect the land even though his actions are a little unorthodox. As for his personal life it is just as exciting. At the beginning of the book he thinks he wants to settle down and being a proper boyfriend when another old
flame won't let the fire go out he has a dilemma just as big as the problems plaguing his job. Heywood writes a realistic character that has many incidents happen on the job and shows the reader how this job is done in vivid dialogue. If you like Steve Hamilton C J Box or Nevada Barr or just like stories set in unique places with real characters this is a must read for you.

Very good. Could even be Better.
Mr. Heywood's "Berkut" is one of the best books I've ever read. Very hauntingly good. This Ice Hunter could be a very promising series to come, if he could keep Grady Service and Nantz more interesting than this first one. Some parts of this book were little contrite and tiresome, and would let the reader put down for couple of days and pick it up later, and that's not good. A better book should grab the reader so tightly that once he picks up, it won't let him go even he's so tired and need the sleep to recover. Mr.Heywood is a very talented writer, and he could be one of the greatest storytellers in the book world. By the way, one thing I did find out from the book's jacket: Take a good look at the fine printing of who took the picture of Mr. Heywood. You may find it very interesting. God Bless you, Sir.

Good plot, great character
Grady Service doesn't do well with people and he can't play political games. What he does is hunt down violators of fishing, hunting, dumping, and other regulations protecting the environment. His special love is the Mosquito Wilderness Tract, an unspoiled piece of land in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. When strange things start to happen in the Tract, Service launches into action.

The strange things include arson, and murder. While murder is normally reserved for the county police, Service won't back down. Something strange is happening in his wilderness and the murder is only a symptom. But who would possibly have anything to gain? Service intends to find out.

What makes ICE HUNTER work is Service. Author Joseph Heywood has created a complex character with enough flaws to make him approachable, and enough weaknesses to make him endearing despite his pathological fear of women, commitment, dogs, and taking it easy.

What makes ICE HUNTER work is watching Service. While the plot is well constructed and interesting, it is simply the stage across wich Service acts. It will be interesting to see if Service can keep his edge in future novels as he overcomes his fear of both women and dogs. I'll look forward to finding out.
