Good resource for parents
A handy book. Girzone is a mostly liberal Catholic, although in some areas he's surprisingly conservative. A good resource to prepare for the inevitable questions about religion and life that your children will ask.

Excellent Synopsis of Pathophysiology and Laboratory Tests
The value and limitations of human clinical laboratory testing is very difficult to introduce or summarize. Most texts are over 1100 large fine print pages. This text by authors at Georgetown University and the Scripps Clinic provides a systematic introduction to Hematology, Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology (including some virology), Endocrinology, Theraputic Drug Monitoring, Toxicology, Tumor Markers, and Nutrition Disorders. Both diagrams provided and helpful tables are surprisingly current considering the 1991 publication date. Many medical professionals will be well served if they understand just what is contained within these covers.

Excellent Reference
These days it has become difficult to find programming reference manuals that are both complete and concise. This quick reference is the perfect programming companion to the Win32 API. I would give it 5 stars except that it could use a few more bits of sample code.

Good explanation of America's facination with early aviation
Joseph Corn's "The Winged Gospel" is a loving study of why many Americans were fascinated with aviation during the first half of the twentieth century. Corn explores the religous flavor which became associated with the airplane, and how a career in aviation became regarded as a mystical, "higher calling." Corn also examines how the bombing raids of World War II, especially on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, shattered that optimism. Corn devotes separate chapters to such phenomenon as the unique freedoms discovered by women aviators, the belief of "an airplane in every garage," and the boundless optimism in the future brought about by the airplane held by people in the grip of a crippling depression. Although his prose tends to be a little dry at times, Corn manages to coherently present a time when people embraced technology, and placed all of their hopes in its "miracles." As Corn ably proves, that time is something Americans will probably never see again.

Great Book
This book was one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and and his brother Hyrum. It was historical, it was unedited, and gave me a unique perspective into the events that lead to their death. I had no idea that the entire state of Illinois was virtually at war with the Mormons.

The author, Michael Joseph Brown is a professor at Candler School of Theology at Emory University, with a M.Div. and Ph.D from the University of Chicago. Thus, he is more than qualified to offer the would-be student of academic biblical studies an intro to this field.
In the first chapter he outlines the purpose and method of academic biblical studies as opposed to the devotional study of the Bible. In the following chapters, he gives 28 rules of thumb for reading and interpreting biblical texts, and for understanding and surviving biblical scholarship. I would say that most of the rules are very sound...though not all. As Brown himself would say, read everything with a critical eye. However, the rules of thumb for understanding biblical scholarship are particularly good and, well, honest.
He writes from a moderately critical perspective, and though his persuasion is always evident, he does not aggressively push his conclusions on the reader. He is evidently aware of the limits of all biblical study...even his own. Certainly frustrating to the conservative student will be the obvious skepticism for the historicity of the events recorded in in the Bible, but I would say read on. Don't look here for a proper understanding of what the Gospel is, but rather to understand the methods, assumptions, and rules of critical scholarship. Whether you like critical scholarship or not, if you dare enter the field of biblical studies, this is what you will contend with.
Much biblical scholarship today, including critical scholarship, is full of overstated cases, imbalance, and arrogance, but Professor Brown comes across as equitable, sincere, and with a real desire to help the student study the Bible academically without losing their faith in God. Although I do not endorse much of what Brown says, I think that students desirous of entering the field could read this and benefit greatly from it. At the very least, it will wake them up to realize that seminary isn't Sunday School, and to their likely surprise will greatly challenge their faith.
