Definitely a page turner
This is a disturbing book. Citro never fails to deliver a well-written, well-thought out, plausible thriller. I would have given this book 5 stars, but I took one star away because I did not think the computer theme worked very well. Also, the illustrations were amatuerish and should be abandoned in any future books. However, those are minor quibbles. This is a terrific read and will spook you in ways you've never been spooked before.

An incredible book!
For those who refer to Joe Citro as the "Vermont Stephen King" apparently have not read Joe's work. The only way to describe this talented writer is to call him Joe Citro. He follows in no one's footsteps, and is paving his own road into the Macabre and Bizarre. Read his work, both fiction and non-fiction, and you will see what I mean.

Doniphan's Epic March: The 1st Missouri Volunteers in the Mexican War (Modern War Studies)

Epic March Remembered
Dr. Joseph Dawson's new book is an outstanding study of perhaps the most grueling and longest campaign in American military history. Following in-hand with Dr. Roger Lanius' superb recent biography of the Mexican War's quintessential citizen-soldier, Alexander William Doniphan, colonel of the 1st Missouri Mounted Volunteer Regiment, this is a regimental history well-done and well-told. Dawson's strong military back-ground, meticulous research, and smooth and vibrant writing style brings color and passion to a great military venture. The reader is carried away in the struggle, the dust and grime of the march, but it never loses the focus of the winds of Manifest Destiny and the tidal-wave of national expansion. Glory and gore fill the pages as Doniphan, the most unlikely hero of the war, leads his rag-tag, motley command of Missourians hundreds of miles deep into Mexican territory, winning two major battles on the way. His ability to paint the difficulty and drudgery of the march, the courage and sacrifice of the men, and the unfolding national events in Washington and Mexico City are all woven into the fabric of splendid prose. The only area that may be considered a shortcoming is the last chapter that spends so much time and ink on the sectional crisis over slavery. Here, the flow loses some focus from the previously straight and direct narrative of the war and Doniphan's march. Joseph Dawson succeeded is telling the story of a great but little known military operation that is rivaled only by Alexander and Napoleon's feats.

Doniphan and the Conquest of New Mexico
"Doniphan's Epic March" explores the experience of the 1st Missouri Volunteers in the Mexican-American War. A volunteer unit formed in June 1846, just after the declaration of war against Mexico, the 1st Missouri formed an integral part of the Army of West led by Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny. Under the command of Alexander William Doniphan-an able young Missouri lawyer, militiaman, and politician-the 1st Missouri performed admirably in the conquest of New Mexico and northern Mexico in 1846-1847. He led it on an epic march of 3,600 miles throughout the Southwest, commanding it to victory over two larger Mexican forces at El Brazito and Sacramento. Joseph G. Dawson III, on the faculty at Texas A&M University, tells this story with enthusiasm and pungency.

The significance of Dawson's work rests on his analysis of the role of citizen soldiers in the wars of America, using Doniphan as a case study, both in the context of combat operations and in military governance of captured territory. In many respects Doniphan was a Cincinnatus at the plough, answering the call of his people to defeat perceived enemies. As such he was like many other Americans both before and since. Dawson explores this issue in relation to the nineteenth century American military establishment, an establishment that gave Doniphan, and indeed all other non-career officers, grudging respect at best. In a rare episode, the Army even invited Doniphan to address the cadets at West Point in the aftermath of the war. Dawson concludes that such citizen soldiers as Doniphan have been an important source of strength for the United States throughout its history. Yet they have received scant attention and even less analysis by military historians.

Dawson also uses Doniphan to evaluate the role of the military in governing conquered foreign provinces. This was something that the United States did not have to deal with before the Mexican-American War. But the acquisition of New Mexico and California by invasion of the Army of the West raised important questions about the status of the peoples residing there and the form of government to be established. Doniphan's legal background made him an ideal advisor to Kearny as he dealt with these questions in relation to New Mexico. With the mission of bringing New Mexico into the United States, Doniphan counseled Kearny to swear its residents to allegiance to the conquering nation and to establish a civilian government as expeditiously as possible. Kearny did just that, and Doniphan wrote both an oath of allegiance used throughout the territory and a law code that served well the now U.S.-controlled territory of New Mexico. This approach, championed by Doniphan, set a precedent that has continued.

"Doniphan's Epic March" is a good book. It is solidly researched and well written. Most important, it offers broad conclusions about the role of volunteer officers in American military history.

Early Germanic Grammar: Pre-, Proto-, and Post-Germanic Languages
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (September, 1992)
Authors: Joseph B. Voyles and Joseph B. Voyles
Amazon base price: $105.75
Average review score:

Derivational grammar of the various Germanic languages
This book is thorough in its coverage of the derivational laws that turned Indo-European words into the Indo-European vocabulary of the Germanic languages. To find interest here, you will not only have to have a fairly solid background in Indo-European linguistics; you will also need to be familiar with the abstract shorthand used by historical linguists, as it is omnipresent in this book.

As a treatment of these topics, it is thorough and comprehensive. It is silent, though, on the question of whether there is a substantial non-Indo-European element in the Germanic languages, and the relationship of any "substrate," if it in fact exists, to the sound changes it records. There is also minimal attempt made here to analyse relationships between the various Germanic languages, even though the book records similar sound changes appearing independently among the different languages of the family. Some nod to the existence of these subjects for debate would have made this a better book.

A unique reference work unlike others out there
No other academic volume covers the different eras of Germanic grammar more completely nor more succinctly than Professor Voyles'. He comprehensively treats nominal/adjectival declension, pronominal declension, and verb conjugation and addresses some long-standing controversies. He does not believe for instance, that there were two long-e vowels in Germanic (e1 and e2); rather, he demonstrates how they are both derivative of the same long-e in Indo-European and how they were pronounced identically in Germanic times. Any historical linguist would do well to start with this singular volume.

interesting format
The book consists solely of exercises and hints for every exercise, which he curiously calls "answers". This book is perfect if you are looking to review geometrically-tinged algebraic structures like matrix groups, symmetry groups, and wallpaper groups. There is also some basic pure algebra in here. I don't think this book would work all that well for a student new to algebra, although someone with some backgroud in algebra can definitely get something out of the geometric chapters.

Good but requires that you keep paper and pencil at hand.
This is an exellent book on stability and bifurcation theory, from an applied math perspective. A reader could just skim and pick up a broad outline but would be better off working though at least some of the messy details to make sure that (s)he is really following the thread of the argument.

Eye Opener
The premises of this book are that during the late 70" and 80's budget cuts decreased the amount of money the State Department could spend on the embassy program. The cuts they chose to make were to the site security forces and the actual compound security equipment. The book also gives the reader a nice little run down of all the attaches they have faced over the past 25 years.

The most interesting parts of the book were the known safety issues that were brought up by embassy staff, but could not be corrected due to funding problems. Then to correlate these safety issues with the events that have taken place or the past few years, it is chilling to see the mistakes that were made. Overall this is an interesting book.

Why Diplomacy is the First Line of Defense
"Embassies Under Siege" tells the story of some of the greatest tragedies and dramas of modern diplomacy. Told by Americans who experienced shattering events, these first-hand accounts speak of courage, terror, and blunders as ordinary foreign service officers attempt to cope with extraordinary circumstances. The immediacy of the writing, brevity of the chapters, and the harrowing reality of the assassinations, bombings and hostage-takings make this a quick read. Yet you will ponder the lessons of "Embassies Under Siege" long after you've finished the book. A must-read for anyone interested in foreign affairs and the challenges of diplomacy in developing countries.

English Fairy Tales

What fairy tales are meant to be!
Okay, it's not totally 'PC', but this book is true to the spirit of childrens stories. Along with the classics (e.g. Jack the Giant Killer and Tom Thumb) there are lesser-known tales full of real suspense, action, ghosts, magic, realy wicked stepmothers, love lost, imps, and fairies. And no guns. It provides the little stressors that Disney doesn't, so that the effect is genuine - real anxiety, and real relief at the point of resolution. You can never be sure that there will be a wedding at the end of any story.

The book has beautiful word-play and rhythm, along with classic sketched illustrations - A keeper for all time.

Two Classics from Joseph Jacobs
I'll let you in on a little secret. This is actually two of Jacobs' books published together in a nice hardbound edition from the Everyman Library. This edition includes both "English Fairy Tales" and "More English Fairy Tales." Jacobs collected and adapted many tales in his lifetime and made contributions to the field of fairy tale studies. This is one of the most popular of his collections. Variations of well-known and lesser known tales are available in this book such as Cinderella and Tom Tit Tot (similar to Rumpelstiltskin).

eBay Business The Smart Way
I have a large collection of 1930 - 1960 kids' toys and games I want to liquidate. Sinclair's book not only provides the ABC's of selling on eBay, but it shows you the potential business problems and how to navigate (and research) your way around them. This book is a great tutorial for applying important business principles and common sense to a new (for me) marketplace. Selling these collectables, and making good money, on eBay may not be as easy as I once thought, but Sinclair's book is a broad-reaching consultative resource to help me get it done faster, safer, and more profitably.

A comprehensive , practical business guide
I picked up this book expecting technical discussion about Ebay. I am a novice Ebay user and wanted to get up to speed after having successfully bought some things and gotten familiar with the process, while planning to sell some higher priced items. I found it easy to read with many Ebay-specific facts and tips but was really impressed with the wide-ranging discussion about business, especially the emphasis on customer service and marketing. These are the topics many first-time entrepreneurs find mysterious and large companies have seemingly started to forget, to their disadvantage. Giving good service in this era of voicemail mazes, un-navigable websites and untrained, minimum-wage retail salespeople is a lesson, if learned, Ebay businesses will use to prosper. Sinclair has covered most, if not all of the bases in this business book. Everything is current and up-to-date, from how to get paid to the latest info on taking and using digital photos. I recommend this to anyone in any business.

ebay business the smart way
As the owner of a bookkeeping/computer programming company in a remote area of Texas I have many clients who have a problem disposing of excess inventory, marketing their products, or finding needed items at a reasonable cost.

While I have been aware of Ebay for sometime, I never really thought it could benefit me or my clients. Sinclair's book is an eye-opener.

I see how excess invntory can be sold, and Texas Hill Country crafts can be made available to a huge market at a very low cost. I also see how many necessary items can be purchased at prices well below those in this area. When you are 125 miles from the nearest large city your market is small, and your choices are few. Ebay changes the market dynamics for us.

After reading ebay Business the Smart Way, I have been looking at Ebay in a different light, and I am working with several clients developing marketing plans using Ebay.
