Liberal Nationalism for Israel: Towards an Israeli National Identity
Published in Hardcover by Gefen Books (August, 1999)

Recommendation of Liberal Nationalism in Israel
Joseph Agassi is a thoughtful philosopher, whose recent book, Liberal Nationalism in Israel, presents a profound analysis of national identity, political processes, and the relation between religion and the state. He makes a passionate plea for the separation of religion from government in Israel, arguing that the result will be greater security for the nation, a more open political life, and a healthier religious life. It should be read by every one concerned with fundamental questions in political philosophy and with the special case of Israeli society.

Israeli National Identity: A Dilemma
This is a brilliant book by a leading Israeli public intellectual on the vexing question of Israeli national identity and the relationship between church and state, religion and nation in Israel. Agassi provides a brief synopsis of the history of nationalism and Zionism from the perspective of "liberal nationalism" and develops a program for radical revision of Zionist goals and Israel's "constitution" in light of progressive enlightenment ideals. He demonstrates that "normalization" in accordance with the Western model of nation-state would have beneficial effects for Israel, the Jewish Diaspora, and the Palestinians. When the book first appeared in 1983 in Hebrew, it evoked a lively discussion, but few were willing to consider seriously Agassi's vision of a secular Israeli identity. Since then a second edition has been published, and the number of Israelis willing to follow the book's inexorable logic is constantly on the rise. An excellent translation and wonderful design enhance the pleasure of reading. A must read for anyone wishing to understand Israel's abiding dilemma.

Professor Shevah Weiss, Chairman, 13th Knessset, writes:
_Who is an Israeali? Who is a Jew?_ On May 14, 1948 David Ben Gurion declared the establishment of the State of Israel. At the time there were about seven hundred thousand Jews in the country. On the threshold of the third millenium about five million Jews live in Israel, nearly one million Arabs, Druse and Circassians, hundreds of thousands of foreign workers and non-Jewish new immigrants from the Commonwealth of Independent States. Israeli Society and its political system are still engaged, perhaps excessively so, with the problem of national identity and the question of the political status of religion. The Israeli "melting pot" does not manage to smelt this great people into a homogenous "Israeli" entity. On the contrary, the chasm is deepening and it is as if it threatens to tear apart Israeli society. Professor Joseph Agassi, one of the important Jewish Israeli philosophers of our time, designs a platform for the normalization of Israel in the accepted western liberal style, and does this in the internal, regional and global contexts of Israel. This book is an absolute must for anyone who cares about the future of Israel. Professor Shevah Weiss, Chairman of the Thirteenth Knesset

Masterfully written
I was so caught up in the novel and couldn't wait to read the next page. Very difficult to put down. You can feel what the Characters are feeling, and realizing that it really happened, with the exception of the fictional family, you can live the past thru their eyes and experience what people really experienced. Very moving. It tugs at the heart strings. I suggest reading the whole series of 9 books, from start to finish.

Wow ! What accuracy ! History Comes to Life .
Emotions raged through me as I read the incredibly accurate writing of Lund . I felt like I was there with the mormons when they were driven from their homes by lawless mobs . How do you get the lump out of your throat after reading such an inspired book ? Read it ... Live it ... Love it !!!

A wonderfully written book.
It's about he Steed family as they move New york to Ohio and then to Missouri. I really loved this book I recommend it to all.

Great book
I greatly enjoyed this book. It is the story of one teacher's career- both the positive and the negative.

The Personal Side of Teaching
I've just had the privilege of reading "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Teacher" by Edward A. Joseph and feel that I should express my appreciation for being allowed to enter the private world of Teaching in urban America. How, one might logically ask, can this be regarded as a private, largely unknown endeavor, given all the publicity the field of Teaching receives? It is simply because the intensity of the emotional involvement is just not appreciated or understood by the general public. This memoir does an admirable job of permitting the reader to share in that intimate experience.

The book is not voluminous, employing short chapters which actually heighten the effect of the hard-hitting commentaries.

The Epilogue has a paragraph which I consider to be very important:

"In addition, the education community needs to restructure the schools so the teachers can teach and the students can learn more effectively. Increasing the amount of curriculum that students have to learn and teachers have to teach is not the answer. High expectations are important, but the setting in which education takes place must make achieving these expectations possible."

I think Joseph is suggesting a more widespread implementation and acceptance of the Alternative High School concept like Yonkers Prep. I assume also that, while such an implementation would undoubtedly be desirable as part of a restructuring, his thoughts are not limited to only that. The solutions of fundamental problems inherent in our system are so daunting, complex and elusive that they would appear to require daring and drastic measures as yet not seriously entertained by those in positions of influence and authority.

In any event those closing thoughts seem to set the stage for a follow-up book on this subject. I look forward to it!

A teacher's revealing insight.
The author gives great insight into the the trials and tribulations of a teacher working in a large school system. Especially interesting was the section about the beginning of Yonker's Prep, the alternative school that the author helped start. It is obvious that there were many difficult times but it is also apparent that the author loved the actual teaching. This is a great book to read for any one but especially teachers and those that may want to be teachers.

The March to the Sea and Beyond: Sherman's Troops in the Savannah and Carolinas Campaigns

A view of the war from ground level
I have to confess a bias; Professor Glatthaar taught me US history in my first semester of college and was a very engaging, entertaining and clear teacher.

This book is history of the very best kind. It is extensively documented from primary sources, it is well written and draws the reader in and the text of the book is free from cumbersome and often distracting academic citation apparatus. It also has selected a topic of almost epic proportions.

The March to the Sea, coming on the heels of the devastating fall of Atlanta was the straw that broke the South's back. After years of war and the related hardships, the devastation that this march produced in the South dealt a death blow to the South's war effort.

In one of the great strategic decisions of the war, Sherman breaks his lines of communication and supply and, like a modern day nuclear sub, disappears only to resurface at Savannah. The freedom of movement that this decision allowed made this march even more effective.

Further, the productivity of the South, even after years of warfare is evidenced. The author presents data showing an increase in the weight of soldiers due to the richness of the diet they were able to secure from those unfortunate enough to be in the path of Sherman's army.

To quibble with a prior reviewer, this is not a novel. This is academic history of the best sort but written in a easy and accesible manner. A great book.

Learn more about Sherman's Soldiers- in their own words
Joseph Glatthaar wrote this book in order to examine Sherman's march across the South "from the level of the common soldier, both enlisted and officer". In the introduction he states that by writing the book from this perspective, he hoped "to restore the reality of the campaigns, to understand the underlying motivation of Sherman's men for adopting a policy of devestation and to shed light on the total-war concept in military history".

Mr. Glatthaar's efforts have resulted in this very informative and engaging book. I did not know a lot about Sherman's Army before reading this book, and feel that I now have a much better understanding of the men who filled the ranks and led the regiments in their famous march to the sea. In his text, Mr. Glatthaar presents many quotes directly from letters and diaries written by Sherman's men, which really enhances the story and his conclusions.

I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn about Sherman's Army- why it was successful, why it adopted a policy of total war, destroying much of the South, and why it remains controversial to this day.

A great justice in the portrayal of MG Sherman's force.
Individuals who belong to a Civil War reenacting association, history buffs, and serious scholars of the Civil War will all find quiet enjoyment in Joseph Glatthaar's historical novel on Major General Sherman's march to Savannah and through the Carolinas. Glatthaar's perspective of bringing the war down to the level of the individual soldier is not always found in historical novels. He writes about the soldier's innermost feelings, not about the glorious generals, the great armies, or the magnificent campaigns. I believe that individual battles do not win wars, but that it is the men composing the fighting force that can turn a potential devastating defeat into a glorious victory. Mr. Glatthaar has done a great justice in his portrayal of the men who conducted the march to the sea and beyond. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who wishes better to understand the soldiers that fought for Sherman

Mark It With a Stone

Mark it With a Star
Joseph Horn's memoir, Mark it with a Stone, is a sharply etched portrayal of the Holocaust as seen for seven years from inside a series of boxcars and concentration camp factories where workers who broke down were systematically broken down. Rich in irony, Horn's visual imagery of what is was like to be a Holocaust victim makes the whole terrible processing of humans seem almost normal despite his vivid accounts of near-starvation, random murders, beatings, and human callousness beyond beliefs. Horn survived several years as a slave of the Nazis, he believes, so he could tell the world what happened as he saw it. Mark it with a Stone accomplishes that goal using visual descriptions that are absolutely convincing and avoiding the lurid hyperbole that turn up in the average Holocaust story. It's all like a description of a day at school punctuated by chronic overwork, wretched food, and occasional murder. The reader, emotionally attached to the hardships of each and every Jewish person, not only feels he or she is actually there but also emerges as a survivor of the book. Because "Mark it with a Stone" presents itself in such an emotionally attaching and vivid manor, high school or advanced middle school students would find it accessible while adults would read it in a single sitting.

No Doubt about it,Mark this book with a Stone and Five Stars
After reading the powerful first hand account,Mark It with A Stone, by Joseph Horn, think of how lucky you are to have a family, food, and a roof over your head. This autobiography takes you along Joseph Horn's journey through Europe and many different concentration camps. He faced death several times and there were times when he'd rather have been dead than alive and suffering. When all the Jews were liberated, he moved to the States. He had to learn how to start over and make a living with few friends and no direct family living. I can assure you that you will not forget such an experience like this one and will learn to teach others of this unfortunate disaster. Knowledge was one concept Horn kept, and hopefully we can all gain more knowledge and use it wisely just like Joseph did, not too long ago! Horn's most interesting aspect was definitely his courage. When you're facing danger, it's hard to act quickly and maturely. Yet, Joseph Horn did this without a problem. Courage is a characterisitic that does not come easily to most people, but Horn demonstrates this several times. To go through the death defying situations that Horn went through, it is evident that courage is needed. Horn was very lucky and benefited from having this important quality that he took with him through life. I highly recommend this book to all young adults and their parents. It's a great book that should be shared with people all around the country. It is very powerful and can be very graphic, so if you're not good at handling these details, then maybe it's not such a good idea. But, we could all learn a lot from Joseph Horn and his story. Regardless of religion, race, or ethnic background, this book should be read by all. If there were only more people with Joseph's courage, strength, wisdom, and compassion, the world would be a better place.

A very moving account of the Holocaust!
It is just unbelievable how many times the author survived death. This is an excellent book for everyone interested in the truth about the Holocaust. Joseph Horn tells everything straightout, nothing but the truth. After reading it, you'll be left thinking about it for a very long time, and wondering how he, or anybody, could survive such an ordeal. An extraordinary book.

A Pleasant and Instructive Book
Cardinal Ratzinger's memoirs are brief and pleasant enough to read easily in one sitting. They are full of interesting biographical background that conjures a picture of family and professional life full of simple joys and of earnest intellectual pursuit of the truth. It is a refreshing and inspiring picture given the prevalence of cynicism and nihilism in our modern Western societies. His vignettes once again demonstrate that simplicity of life is the best route to lasting joy.

But in addition to the personal, we also have insight into the theological and cultural currents in the Church from the end of the Second World War into the late seventies. Especially interesting is Ratzinger's view of the Second Vatican Council from within and how destructive forces have exploited the Council in ways unimaginable to the Council Fathers. The other related facet is the frank portrayal of the ongoing conflict within the Church-- a conflict between those who accept the revelation of the living God given in both Scripture and Tradition always necessarily together (and never apart), and those who wish to remake the Church into an essentially agnostic society whose beliefs fluctuate with the latest academic fads. This book makes a perfect introduction to Cardinal Ratzinger's theological works.

Ratzinger: A Gentle Glimpse
In "Milestones" Ratzinger, the Cardinal, allows us a little glimpse at the soul of Joseph, the man. Yes, there truly is a human individual behind the persona which catches the headlines; and not always in the most favorable of lights. This brief, interesting, easily read 150+ pages shows us a man who loves and is loved by a family with encounters, some normal and others not so due to the times in which lived. We are permitted to see a man, priest, scholar making decisions based sometimes upon very ordinary and personal considerations.

"Milestones" in a quite simple way ties together some great Catholic, theological thought represented by the individuals who walked across the stage of the Cardinal's life; Rahner, Kung, de Lubac, Congar, von Balthasar, Danielou, Bouyer, et alii. Individuals some of whom I have met only in their works were his contemporaries. I find it interesting that this present papacy reflects the theology of not only John Paul II himself but of that of the likes of de Lubac, Congar, von Balthasar, etc.; theological currents with an appreciation for Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition, and the Fathers of the Church. And in its midst is a man comfortably familiar with it all, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger.

The book includes a selection of illustrations which give it a very warm and inviting setting. We see the Cardinal not only in his official capacities but also in some very personal moments with family and friends.

"Milestones" is a simple but important introduction to a man who, one suspects, is far more than just Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. At its end it leaves one wanting more.

Without hesitation, I give "Milestones" a five star recommendation.

Meet Cardinal Ratzinger
This book was wonderful to read and have a sense of the author's personal experience from childhood, living under the Nazi's and Communists, becoming a Priest, Bishop, and Cardinal. The focus is not so much theology but that comes into focus at various times as the author describes his involvement with pre-Vatican II events , the Council itself and the aftermath. It is very insightful for anyone wishing to have a overall picture of the process of the Vatican council and the theological processes that were there at war with each other. Great way to get a picture of the mind of Cardinal Ratzinger.

"Mine in the Sky" from a mill workers perspective.
I worked in the Union Carbide Pine Creek mill for six years during the operations declining period. I am greatful for the experiences as an operator that I had in the mill and the sense of history that is there.I have hiked thru Morgan Canyon many times and after reading Joe Kurtacks book the "Mine in the Sky" it has really brought the history of the operation to life.I am greatful to Joe for documenting the history of this great tungsten operation.

From a former miner
I worked in this mine in 1952 and 1953. My brother worked in the mine for more than ten years. My wife's father worked at the mill during WW II. This is the finest book I have ever seen of it's type. The author caught the flavor of the Pine Creek Canyon and the people who lived and worked there. This was a unique mine with unusual methods of extracting the ore. I heartily recommend this book. The pictures are fabulous.

A true and factual account of man's endurance to mine ore.
This is a wonderful account and fascinating story about many people working eighty years to mine and produce a product that helped our government when in need, and develop several types of tungsten compounds new to the world. It is a story and personal account of many who labored, raised their family and retired at the Pine Creek Mine. Impressive and detailed research was done, plus many actual photos. A must for mining historians and others. Don't miss this true account of one of the worlds greast tungesten mines of all times.
