A very gifted writer with strong sense of humor
This is a most gifted novelist with natural paintbrush. Every book written by Ignatius was thoroughly reseached before put into writing. If you are keen enough in humor, some of the chapters and paragraghs were the most humorous creation ever written by a novelist! Some readers might find this book somehow not so easy to read along since the Cold War was over and CIA is really and actually in deep shit now. But Ignatius never failed to amazed the readers that he could adjust himself pretty well and fast; he proved it in his recent good book, A FIRING OFFENSE.

Virtual visual history comes alive!
This book is a winner! The author has gathered all kinds of old postal card and family photos of the folks who settled Sister Bay, the northern jewel of the Door Peninsula. Then he met with older folks with long memories and assembled a kind of oral history of the Sister Bay our grandparents knew, from the 1890's to more recent history. A lovely book, great photos, a real trip down memory lane and beyond! Even if you don't know Door County or Sister Bay, Wisconsin, I think there are some wonderful commonalities with all small towns, east coast or midwest.

Wonderful!
I had the pleasure of studying with Larry at Skidmore College. He gave me a copy of this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed his work. The poems in this collection (as are all of his poems) are well-written, beautiful pieces. I am sad to mention that Larry passed away this past summer. The literary community has lost a fine contributor.

Surprized!
Im Ms. Holden-Bussard's hairstylist. To be very honest, I bought her
book out of loyalty. I knew I would need to read it before her next
appointment, so I set aside a time, on a very, very busy day, with
lots of stops and waiting periods in between, while in town, to read
her book. My first stop was tune-up and oil change, good, at least an
hour or more to start reading this book. My car was finished, I
continued reading the book for more than an hour, at the tune-up
center. I made a crucial decision---cancell all the other business for
the day--go home--READ THIS BOOK!! I did, came home, got comfortable
and did not do a single thing but FINISH reading this book!! I simply
couldn't wait to see what happened next. I came sooooooo close to
calling Ms. Holden-Bussard at 2:30 in the morning when I finished
it--I simply had to share my feelings with her!! I was overwhelmed by
the beauty, the adventure, the mystery, the excitement-the romance,
suspense, intrigue--the easy to read format that Ms. Holden-Bussard
uses. It literally held me in its beauty, its grace and heart-felt
simplicity! I cannot reccommend this book enough. I have since
purchased several copies to give to friends and family--NO, I will not
loan out my autographed copy--it has become an essential part of the
energy of my home! I have only one more comment: Ms. Holden-Bussard,
will there be more?? Please!! I remember you sharing some of the
frustrations and challenges of getting this book published--but the
selfish part of me says--Skinny Scottie was worth it--I WANT MORE!!!!!

Great for surgery and medicine review!
This book has been great for reviewing the presentation, diagnosis, and medical management of surgical conditions like PSS and PDA. It's an efficient way to review for boards, too.

An Eye-Open on the True Nature of Our Modern Society
No popular book has been as urgent as this since Al Gore's 'Earth In Balance' in addressing the imbalance in our modern lifestyles. A discussion on how our society as heedless consumers and the whole economic structure built around it are bringing woe unto our own species as well as onto our precious planet, this book also reveals that by living a simple lifestyle much can be done to alter basic socio-economic ills present in todays society as well as pressing environmental issues that we cannot ignore in our daily lives. A sobering read anyone with a even a modicum of conscience.

Balanced and informative, from warrior pilot to novice flyer
Walt always delivers the best of aviation history. He manages to bring the man and machine into perspective.
I am not sure he will be able to quote the maximum load capacity of a Phantom II on a bombing mission to Hanoi, but he sure will know what Dr. von Ohain and Sir Frank Whittle have in common.
It is this insight that will always seperate Boyne from his contemporaries, and make his books a rewarding reading experience.

Translating the Clouds
A forced exile from Leningrad who went on to live in New York and New England, and teach at Mount Holyoke College, Joseph Brodsky is a serious poet--a brilliant self-translator of his own often brilliant poems--the National Poet Laureate under Clinton--and a man who advocated putting poetry books rather than Bibles in hotes drawers. Well I'm not sure one can find infinite solace or religious consolation proper in this work (which was, if not the last, then among the last of Brodsky's works--with many of the poems written in the mid-nineties shortly before his death in his fifties), one will find moral guidance at its non-preachy best. Like other poets, Brodsky writes of love and loss and the end of the century (one of the half-rhyming translated poems is entitled "fin de siecle"), but he does so with a certain nobility, a certain nongrandiose majesty that lifts him, without any display of effort on his part, to the ranks of the very finest poets ever. Unlike fellow exile Vladimir Nabokov, for example, who seems always to be arguing, thinking about arguing, or making a flourish of having no need to argue, for his posthumous recognition--and whose works, translated by his son, always seem a bit overwritten--Brodsky's poems read fresh and direct in his own translations. And yet, as with the greats of the Russian literary legacy (Chekov's characters are the subject of one poem), we are reminded in reading Brodsky that story-telling and poetry have reached peaks out of the purview of those who cannot appreciate say Pushkin in the original. Observation is a kind of translation, and there is the opposite problem, or rather tendency, of Brodsky's view of America (like Nabokov's) having something strangely quaint and distorted about it--as if strip malls could provide Americans with something more than the generic backdrop against which the exile spins his reveries and measures his memories. It is strange to see the archetypal nonexotic of America made strange through the exile's eyes. We must be grateful for Brodsky for taking the time to translate his own works. In this volume Brodsky laments the passing of time, the aging of lovers, the encroaching of death--he captures long-vanished armies in his poetic net, advises his daughter on where to look for him once he is gone. There is an uncompromising realism in him that is both frightening and refreshing. I thought "Clouds"--"lighter than the body/better than the soul"--one of the best poems ever written--or should I say translated.
