Probably Controversial When First Published (even in France)
I read this book in French (a language I'm imperfect in) several years ago. Written in the '30s,the story of a bourgeoise deliberately entering a part-time life of prostitution was probably daring for its time, even in blasé France. The Buñuel film gives a religious (i.e. repressive) reason as clue to Severine's entry into prostitution, and a brief shot of herself being molested when young. The former would follow Bunuel's anti clerical atheism. The book, however, is more explicit (though brief) in describing Severine's being molested, and this is certainly one reason why any female might enter that life. She might also have had a "naughty" streak untended by her caring husband. The style of the book is simple but skilled, characters such as the criminals Severine becomes involved with through her new surroundings believable. (In Bunuel's film the main "heavy" is Spanish, in the book not). All said, an interesting, well-told twist on an old profession.

Heartwarming Dramedy
A well-written mix of comedy and drama, this is a tenderly, yet at times brutally honestly told tale of two older women whose well-meaning daughters set them up in a condo in Las Vegas. These women, Tess and Fannie, who think life has passed them by, both fall in love with the charming swindler Johnny Paolucci, and they realize that they are still capable of love, passion, and recreating themselves. Funny, touching, sometimes delightfully raunchy play with wonderful character parts. 2f (over 60), 2f (30s/40s), 1m (40s/50s), 1m (over 60).

Bluff Your Way in Office Politics

the only office etiquette book you'll ever need
Having seen and been distressed by other "bluff your way..." books I saw BYWIOP on a shelf in a store and thought, here's a "how to bluff" book that is about a field that is all bluffing! This should be full of useful information, or at least as entertaining as Dogbert!

I picked up the book and was proven correct. This book is very at home next to "Dogbert's top secret management handbook" on my shelf and would fit that way on any cynical bureaucrat's bookshelf.

Insight into the Author
Shea's sense of romance is interesting. The story line sometimes loses the essence of time. The dialogue lacks in many instances. However, Shea's writing carries a much larger meaning. His introduction points out that his initial writings helped him to cope with his the untimely suicide of his mother. Often insightful, the reader can easily tell which parts were written from Shea's heart.

His story is real. His feelings are real. His book is fiction. By carefully reading his dialogues, the reader can see into Shea himself, setting the storyline aside. Shea's message is clear. Depression is a disease, and those who have it need to seek help immediately. It's a worthy cause worthy of congratulations.

Fluff Piece To A Great Movie
Published at the same time as the release of the film, "Notes from a Film Maker" offers a great deal of back-slapping and generally high praise as written by the producer, Levine and the director, Richard Attenborough. It's actually a very short book with plenty of glossy photos from the production and written pieces by Levine and Attenborough. This book is out of print, but was great fun to review as a fan of the film. The most disappointing part was that there was very little insight offered into the actual production. What comes off is that Levine and Attenborough have a great deal of respect for each other and don't have a bad word to say about anyone.

great book for a new Mason
This is a great book for a new (or old) Master Mason to read. Joeseph Fort Newton designed this book for new Master Masons under the Grand Lodge of Iowa - but it is in no way specific to Iowa.

Contents are superb, but spoiled by bad organization.
As prior reviews state, the text is well-selected from Powell's journal, and the photographs are superb. But how can the author publish the journal of an explorer without a map keyed to the dates of journal entries? The photographs are superb, but again, not keyed to a map, or even associated with the text. The identifying data for each photo is listed in the front of the book, but is not given on, or near the photograph. A potentially superb book, but, because of these defects and faults, one that is maddening to read.
