... BOOFO IS TERRIFIC
I've been looking for this book as my daughter wants to get it for several gifts. I'll pass on to her that I found it. I have read it and seen the reaction of children to this book. It's absolutely delightful. What a shame that the above review from the School Library Journal is so unfavorable...
Get this book for your child or grandchild and it will become as traditional at Christmas Time as reading "Rudolph" or "The Snowman" is...... You'll enjoy it too!

Charming and sweet
This book is adorable, charming and sweet an absalute must for all you people who like to read.

A book all parents with teenage kids should read.
This book is not only funny but very insightful. It opened several doors of communication between my sixteen year old daughter and myself. I am able to get needed information about the boy she is dating while sharing a few laughs at the same time.
I have given this test to a couple of boys now, she is actually making better and more concious choices of the boys she is choosing date. She now looks at boys wandering if they would pass the test or not.
I love this book and would recommend it to any parent that has a teenager in the dating scene.

What A Great Read,
Funny and well written, this book shows the reality of parenthood and I laughed throughout out the entire book. It reminded me of my father, and how much I am like my parents when dealing with my own kids and the sense of humor you have to have to be a parent in today's culture.

I'd reccomend this book to everyone. I also like the fact that the author is a guy who is just a father dealing with the same problems and teenager issues, making it easy to relate to him, from a personal perspective. I have told all my friends about it, and I will be giving the test to every boy that wants to date my daughter.

Outstanding Resource!
This book cover all aspects of the ADD / ADHD child. Good recommendations on meds. for different types of ADHD and why.

concise yet thorough discussion of ADHD and its management
I read a borrowed copy and was ordering my own book within 24 hours. Both as a professional working with "at risk" children and as the mother of a child with a psychobiological disorder, I whole-heartedly recommend Dr. Horacek's book. In a spare 211 pages he gives perhaps the clearest most readable discussion of neuroanatomy and neurotransmitters I have encountered. He covers medical management and includes a fascinating glimpse of drug manufacture and marketing, the FDA, and the quandry faced by medical practitioners (hence insurance companies and consumers) in labeling a collection of behavioral symptoms. This book's cost might give some pause, but in my experience one would have to combine 2 or 3 other less readable texts to approximate the content of this single volume. It's an ideal purchase for those who want to know "why".

Breaking the Silence: Overcoming the Problem of Principal Mi
This is a book that needs to be read by every intelligent taxpayer in the United States. Improving education is a frequent topic for both the media and our political leaders. But this book very quietly points out one of the major weaknesses in our educational system. The abuse of teachers by their adminstration and school boards.

Read this book and ask a public school teacher how much of it rings true in your schools.

Teachers are the most valuable link in the value chain. They are also at the bottom the totem pole. What way does excrement run?

Required Reading
The American Society for Ethics in Education (ASEE) STRONGLY ENDORSES "BREAKING THE SILENCE" for use in ALL teacher/administrator training programs, as a tool to assist abused teachers as a healing tool to overcome the intentional devastation inflicted upon them by evil administrators, and as required reading for schools and districts that have been found in violation of abusing teachers by agencies, such as the United States Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights.

ASEE had the great honor of reviewing this book in advance of its release. Without question, Breaking the Silence is destined to become THE definitive book on the shocking topic of teacher abuse by corrupt and evil (we're using that term in the most literal sense) school administrators. This horrifying look at what is so prevalent in American schools is based upon genuine research, conducted by respected scholars Drs. Joseph and Jo Blase, from the University of Georgia's, College of Education. Their research was conducted over a three year period, using well established and accepted methods. Essentially everything regarding teacher abuse is covered:

* personal (anonymous) testimonies from research subjects (i.e., abused teachers),
* personality characteristics of corrupt administrators and their innocent victims,
* lack of support from district office personnel,
* refusal of most teachers who work in foul environments to reach out to abused colleagues,
*inability for abused teachers to find legal assistance,
* failure of unions to support abused teachers,
*strategies used by corrupt administrators to enlist "support" for their sick behavior through favoritism with certain staff members, and developing "spy" networks (weak-kneed teachers and staff who "snitch" on those that refuse to compromise their ethical behavior),
* suggestions for those who are currently, or have been, in abusive situations,
* the devastating short and long term impact upon teachers' physical/physiological/psychological health, and
* the overwhelming detrimental effects on schools and society.

The list goes on, and on, and on . . . Without question, this book will not only serve to validate the experiences of abused teachers (the number one comment of those writing to ASEE comes from teachers who, until having visited our site, have felt "alone"), but it is also the first serious work on a topic that has long been regarded as "education's dirty little secret" - severe and intentional infliction of evil on highly competent educators. Still not convinced? Guess who wrote the "Forewords" to the book?

Don Saul,
American Association of School Administrator's
Superintendent of the Year (2000)

and

Dr. Gary L. Anderson,
Professor of Educational Administration
California State University, Los Angeles

Certainly, such esteemed educators, both of whom have a vested interest in school administration (and administrators) must have significant and compelling reasons to lend their support to a study that reveals that members of their peer group are among some of the darkest and most evil members of American society. ASEE was founded by teachers to help expose this evil. We salute these educational leaders for displaying the courage to lend significant professional credence to something that both the news media and society in general have continually ignored.

Made Me Laugh, Made Me Cry
This book is a wonderful continuation of the Molly the Cat series, but also stands alone beautifully. You will follow Molly on her next adventure Outside, where she meets the lovable bulldog, Brewster. Full of charming storytelling, great values, beautiful illustrations and an ending that will touch your heart. A must have for children and cat-lovers of all ages.

To label this exclusively a children's book is a misnomer!
I have found this book to appeal to all ages. As in any good literary work, I seem to find something new on each reading. It not only expands on the development of the obvious themes but touches on many other important issues. Beyond that it paints many great visuals as well as interjecting humor. I would highly recommend it!

Bright Promise, Failed Community

Sociology at Its Best!
Dr. Varacalli has written the most incisive and informative analysis of the state of the Catholic Church in the United States over the last forty years, especially regarding the issue of the impact of Catholic social doctrine. His sociology of knowledge framework represents the discipline at its best! I have used with great profit BRIGHT PROMISE, FAILED COMMUNITY: CATHOLICS AND THE AMERICAN PUBLIC ORDER as a required text in my American Catholics course; I will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Donald J. D'Elia, Ph.D. Professor of History State University of New York New Paltz

Catholic Social Teaching and the American Public Square
In this lucidly written, intellectually lively, and politically provocative volume, author Joseph A. Varacalli offers his explanation as to why the "bright promise" of Catholic Social Teaching has not been widely accepted and received favorably in the American Republic. In short, he argues that two dialectically related factors account for this rejection/indifference. They are (1) an uncongenial American value system (first Protestant, then secular) and (2) the"failed community" of Catholic America, i.e., an ineffective and dissent-ridden set of organized and institutionalized arrangements that have been unable to carry successfully the message contained within Catholic social doctrine. Varacalli's understanding of the contemporary state of the Catholic Church stands in a line of succession of analyses put forth by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Monsignor George A. Kelly and James Hitchcock. Conversely put, his analysis throws a gauntlet in the face of the dominant liberal faction that basically has controlled the United States Catholic Church since Vatican II. Whether or not one agrees with Varacalli's analysis, he has put forward a serious intellectual, moral and religious challenge to those who defend the present situation in the Catholic Church of the United States. Of note is that the volume starts off with a useful forward written by political scientist Stephen M. Krason (of Franciscan University), who along with Varacalli founded the Society of Catholic Social Scientists in 1992. Varacalli's analysis is consistent with the dual mission of the Society, namely, to integrate Catholic Social Thought into social scientific analysis and to attempt to shape the American and the international public square with an authentic Catholic presence.

Thoughtful & compassionate view of a life passage
Joe Gallenberger gives us a thoughtful and compassionate view of what it is like to live with and go through the suicide of a family member. He shows the emotions of himself and his family very vividly as they go through the stages of living with a person who has suicidal tendencies, and dealing with the aftermath of death, putting it all into perspective. This is a most insightful view of everyone involved and I highly recommend it for anyone who has lived through the death of a loved one. It is the perfect present to give to people who have experienced a sudden death of a friend or family member. I have given many copies as gifts to friends in need and shall continue to do so. Joe Gallenberger has created a gift for all of us and I am grateful! Gari Carter(GariCarter@aol.com)

Open and honest accounting of a deeply personal experience!
The author is so nakedly truthful about this intimate experience of life and death, one can't help feeling connected with him and his family. A great book for anyone seeking solace in a similar situation. Courageously written and elegantly presented

Direct and informative
Well focused and aimed at the home builder in 6500 degree-day and colder climes, contains a complete roundup of insulation, ventilation, and waterproofing problems. Don't know if I believe everything though. For instance, temperature gradients ("water vapor moves from cold to warm") as a vapor transport mechanism. No explaination is given, other than that it is somehow related to the Second Law of Thermodynamics. My sense is this is not worth worrying about.
The basic format consists of a text discussion of a topic, followed by a section containing numerous architectural drawings that illustrate the material.

Best book on subject
I have reviewed lots of books and magazines on residential building techniques for energy and resource efficieny. There is a lot of confusion and misinformation out there. This book clears it up in one authoritative and concise guide to building techniques. For those who want to know how and why to build it right. Best source available on moisture control and insulation applications. Challenges some conventional wisdom. Concepts demonstrated in great graphics. Listiburek is a respected expert.

The Cambridge Companion to Joseph Conrad

A Great Conrad Companion
The series "Cambridge Companions" is somewhat uneven. Some titles are excellent, and others are inaccesible, tedious and really not "Companions" at all. This "Companion", however, to Joseph Conrad is probably one of the best in the series.

Beginning with a short biography of Conrad's life, there follow chapters on the short fiction, and several on most of the important of Conrad's works, such as "Heart of Darkness", "Lord Jim", "Nostromo" and "The Secret Agent". These are followed by sections on his late novels, Conradian narrative, his influence, and others. All of the Chapters are written in closed essay form by leading Conrad scholars, are easy to read, and well documented with footnotes. The final chapter includes a fairly comprehensive bibliography that wil be most helpful for students and scholars alike. It will provide a good starting point for further research.

If you are interested in Joseph Conrad, beyond reading his novels and short stories, then this book will be very helpful. I recommend it highly.

TRAVELLING WITH CAPTAIN CONRAD
Joseph Conrad is not only a Great Master of English literature, but also a man who wandered all over the world, by sea and land, producing for our delight a treasure of short stories as intense as novels, as well as a dozen novels as engaging as fairy tales. For some readers he is above all a writer of "sea stories", for others a creator of fabulous adventures; for many, an intuitive connoisseur of the human soul who gave birth to unforgettable characters. But there is more: Joseph Conrad inhabits his books, he is a friend who shows us a path, gently spelling out about a period in human history. He talks to the intelligence and the emotions. The bunch of essays of this wonderful companion, by the Cambridge fellows, gives us precious hints for travelling with Captain Conrad through the labyrinths and waves of the physical and virtual planet in which chance has placed us to live and die.
