The Presence of the Actor
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Pub Co (February, 1973)
Author: Joseph Chaikin
Amazon base price: $8.95
Used price: $2.49
Average review score:

Disarmingly honest and insightful
If I could possess only one book, I would choose this book. Chaiken candidly describes profound moments of awareness in his work and in his life, and the relationship between these. This is not a conventional book about the theater, but rather a complicated and understandably inconclusive examination of being and enduring and striving toward authenticity within the confines of an inauthentic "setup." It begins..."Most of the people I know who are seriously interested in the theater don't really like it very much." If you like this book, try The Performance of Self in Everyday Life by Erving Goffman.

Violence at Work by Joseph A. Kinney
This is the most thoughtful and comprehensive book on non-robbery violence at work. The book is based on substantial research and investigation into more than 200 cases. Other books in this category simply are not based upon this type of indepth research and analysis. More importantly, the book also provides a comprehensive set of recommendations for policy makers and administrators who are interested in addressing this phenomenon in a meaningful way. Not only does the author have a comprehensive insight into this problem, but clearly understands the best methods for preventing violence.

An excellent resource!
This book is an excellent resource for both the practitioner and the researcher with an interest in occupational stress. As a stress researcher, I have referred to this book many times and my questions are almost always answered. In addition, it has an unusally extensive reference listing that covers virtually the entire spectrum of academic literature in the field of occupational stress. This book adds real value.

Priestley: Political Writings

Authors: Joseph Priestley and Peter Miller

An Overlooked Classic
Joseph Priestley is one of the greatest intellectual figures of modern times. However, he should be remembered for more than just his great discoveries in the realm of science. His "Essay on the First Principles of Government" is a brilliant libertarian piece based on natural rights philosophy. He is a strong enemy of both established religion and public schooling. His eloquent advocacy of these positions as well as "freedom of thought" as a whole is still very much relevant today. It is a shame that his works have been so overlooked in recent times. This work is yet another example of how the wisdom of the 18th century is far greater than that of the 20th in many fields, most importantly political philosophy.

Prime Time Law -- a great read!
I read "Prime Time Law" for my Society and Law class at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It is formatted into essays written on different prime time television shows (i.e. Law & Order, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, etc.). The book as a whole is an excellent analysis of how law and legal actions are portrayed on the small screen. An exception read for anyone interested in a theoretical analysis of such television programs.

This book can be read in fifteen minutes easily.
This book is truly written for the young reader; however, it can be read and enjoyed by all ages. There is really no new information, but it is treated in a different manner which is appealing. The story is told almost entirely by using almost all simple sentences so that is can be easily understood by the age group for which it is intended.

It is refreshing to have the author refer to Prince William's life as "an inspirational life" which it is when one stops and thinks about all the unfortunate circumstances he has endured in his sixteen and a half years of life.

The author succeeds in getting her point across. Any individual who is five years of age and can read will be able to read and to understand this book. The words which the author thinks a young reader may not know are written in bold print and are explained very simply in the glossary found on page 30.

One also get the Web site for the publishers from which one can download a free screen saver. also, there are two Internet Sites given for Prince William with which you are probably acquainted if you have always read about the young prince. All pictures are in color.

This is a delightful paperback book consisting of thirty-two pages.

The fourth edition of this classic text is now available and it is even better than previous editions. Many chapters have been rewritten and new authors add significantly to the current edition.
