Educational Bereavement Handouts for Clients

Author: Joseph R. Pfeiffer
Amazon base price: $39.99
Average review score:

Practical with Extremely Useful Clinical Info
I utilize these "handouts" for a support group I facilitate with family members who have lost a child under my care. These handouts have proven to be very practical, easy to absorb, and great at getting group members to begin sharing their own grief surrounding the death of the young child. I can't think of a topic this title does not cover. I especially appreciate the fact that each topic (or handout) gives my group members space to journal and/or respond to the subject based on their own experiences. It is obvious this author has faced death more than once.

The Edwardian Detective, 1901-1915
Published in Hardcover by Ashgate Publishing Company (December, 1999)
Author: Joseph A. Kestner
Amazon base price: $89.95
Average review score:

Amazing review of Sherlock and his "brothers"
Dr. Kestner has done an excellent and thorough job of exploring the relationship between Edwardian detective fiction and the social and cultural background in which the genre was developed.

Kestner argues that detective fiction arose out of the anxiety and instability felt during Edward VII's reign, specificaly the feeling that the British Empire was losing its political domination abroad and that society at home was crumbling.

Through examinations of the famous Sherlock Holmes stories and also some lesser known detectives (at least to the casual reader), Kestner explores how those stories reflect Edwardian fears about the rise of America and Germany, the influx of immigrants, the stability and worth of the aristocracy and monarchy, and the changing role of women in the society.

I recommend this book for the serious Holmes enthusiast and anyone interested in the general history of the Edwardian era.

A Wonderful Book!
As a Eichler home owner I couldn't wait for this book to arrive and thankfully it was a joy to read and pour over all the original photos in the book. I always knew I owned a special home and now I own a wonderful book that validates that too. Even if you are not a Eichler homeowner, but rather just a fan of mid-century homes this is also a must have for your library as it goes into more then just Joe Eichler and his homes. Enjoy the read!

Excellent Book for ESL
I am a literacy tutor for Spanish-speakers that want to learn English. This is the best book ever, and it is one I always use with my students. It has excellent little line drawings that I Xerox and then cut into cards to use in playing words games. I really like the layout of this book. Highly recommended!

The Elements of the Baha'i Faith
Published in Paperback by Element Books Ltd. (January, 1993)
Author: Joseph Sheppherd
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

Very informative book for seekers of the Baha'iFaith
This is the best book I have found to accurately explain the Baha'iFaith and it's beliefs. It is personable and basic enough for someone who has never heard of the Faith to understand the message of Baha'u'llah, yet can be of interest to those who have been Baha'i for a long time. The historical information helps the reader to understand the time period of the birth of this Faith.

Elwood and the Witch
Published in Library Binding by Greenwillow (September, 1900)
Authors: Nicholas Heller, Jos. A. Smith, and Joseph A. Smith
Amazon base price: $15.89
Average review score:

A superbly illustrated, rollicking picturebook story.
When Elwood, a young pig, finds an old broom leaning against a tree trunk he takes it to sweep his front step. What he doesn't realize it that the broom is the property of a witch who will do everything in her power to get it back. To Elwood's surprise and dismay, he finds that he can fly through the air on that old broom. Elwood wants to get rid of the broom as badly as the witch wants it back! Elwood And The Witch is a rollicking story of enchantment by Nicholas Heller which is superbly illustrated by Jos. A. Smith, and one that will hold young readers (ages 5 and up) total attention from first page to last! Also highly recommended are two earlier picturebooks by Nicholas Heller and Jos. Smith: Goblins In Green, and Ogres! Ogres! Ogres!: A Feasting Frenzy From A To Z.

Inspirational
There is a phrase I have always carried with me since my days in the Marine Corps which states: "At the dawn of victory they stopped to rest, and resting, they died." Emerge and See the State of Emergency by Joseph J. Briggs is a thoughtful, well-written, and an extremely motivational book that forces one to reflect on one's choices and direction in life. Most of us spend a lifetime trying to decipher the meaning of life, that meaning which makes life living. For the hungry that haven't reached fertile soil, let this book be your guide.
