Painful People and How to Deal With Them

Highly recommended
This book was the next best thing to reading "How to win friends and influence people". It helps me understand difficult people, and I'm not angry when I deal with them. The facts are very new, startling, would have taken me years to figure out by myself. Also, it is a readable book.

The Papers and the Papers
Published in Paperback by Columbia University Press (April, 1999)
Author: Sanford J. Ungar
Amazon base price: $20.50
Used price: $3.59
Average review score:

Fascinating depiction of a fascinating time
Ungar's book is a wonderful retelling of the Pentagon Papers controversy, from start to finish. It follows the stories of Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the documents, the New York Times reporters and editors who worked with them (in a secret location, for fear of Nixon's government), and the compelling legal battle that followed their publication, reaffirming some of our most basic First Amendment rights. If you want to read just one book on the Pentagon Papers, this should be it.

Excellent reference on the classical orders of architecture
This is the best reference on the Classical Orders of Architecture I have Seen. It has very good text in the first chapter explaining the orders and proportions, but what makes this book unique are the measured drawings of examples of each of the orders. Many variations and richly illistrated.

A wonderful collection of literary essays
Joseph Epstein's collection of essays on various literary figures carries with it two of my favorite virtues: readability and inclusiveness. A book that is readable (or if difficult, rewards the effort, like Faulkner's novels) and that covers all the bases is a joy to find, and "Partial Payments" fits that category nicely. Epstein's basic method is this: read all of a writer's works, a healthy piece of the biographical writings, and then cogitate upon the subject. Each one of Epstein's essays effectively provides an introduction to the writer under scrutiny; each one carries with it a sense of worth and incisive definition of the writer's gifts. Epstein takes for the most part writers who have fallen out of the canon (like H.L. Mencken), or who are no longer read outside of literary history classes (like Theodore Dreiser), or who need fresh views (like E.B. White), and strikes off a portrait in words. Every single one of his essays is worth reading, and most of them have sent me to the local library or Amazon to buy one of the recommended texts. In short, a guidebook to a literary cornucopia of the unjustly forgotten or neglected.

rugged true escape story
Captain Frelinghuysen, of the 5th Field Artillery Battalion of the U.S. 1st Infantry Division, was ambushed and captured by the Germans in North Africa in WWII. Arriving in a concentration camp in Italy in the dead of winter 1942, he refused to accept the defeat and apathy around him and began a self-imposed program of physical training and Italian, preparing himself for an opportunity to escape. His ordeal of seven weeks of fear, hunger, and cold, on foot in some of the most rugged terrain in Europe, ia good history and fine adventure reading as well. Better maps would make the action easier to follow.

Absolutely awesome!!
Being born much too late to witness the glory years of the railroad, I love books which show what the good old days looked like. Some of the scenes in the book are familar to me, and that also adds to the book's appeal. This book shows both the machines and the people affiliated with the railraod. Highly recommended.
