A Theory of Evolving Tonality
Published in Hardcover by DaCapo Press (June, 1975)
Author: Joseph Yasser
Amazon base price: $63.50
Average review score:

Still the best book on 19-tone equal musical temperament
19-tone equal temperament divides the octave into 19 equal tuning degrees, instead of the more usual 12. I am probably the world's leading authority on this temperament. Yasser's book is one of the half-dozen most important references on the subject. His basic thesis is that music has evolved from 5 to 7 to 12 tones in the octave, and is in the process of proceeding to 19 tones. There are problems with this idea, but there can be no doubt that to the extent that music makes use of microtones it will tend toward the 19-tone equal, for a variety of acoustic and physiological reasons. Rock singers constantly use 1/3 tones, for example, and this points toward the 19-tone equal. Yasser's work pullulates with interesting ideas regarding modality and the theory of temperament, and is an essential reference.

This book is a treasure
The first edition of this book changed my life. Back in the sixties I was a teenage Wild West nerd, reading all I could about Western gunfighters. But I was frutstrated. No serious historian was writing about them so I had to settle for highly fictionalized versions. Then Joseph Rosa came along with this wonderful book and established the standard for what a well researched bio of a western gunfighter should be. It taught me the value of looking for the truth even if it's not as pleasent as I would like it to be. There's been few gunfighter bios since that can come close to this one for quaility characterization. The Hickock he creates is flesh and blood and very sympathetic as well as truly flawed. The second edition is even better. This book is a treasure. Thank you, Mr. Rosa.

Tremendous account of unsung regiment
Without a doubt, "Three Years in the Bloody Eleventh: The Campaigns of a Pennsylvania Reserves Regiment" by Joseph Gibbs is arguably one of the finest books recently published about the Civil War. Gibbs' work not only takes the reader directly into numerous conflicts the Bloody Eleventh endured, he explains with thorough and exhaustive research the life of some of the bravest and finest soldiers that fought against the Confederacy. Gibbs' work pulls no punches and his facts are clearly presented with tremendous footnotes, maps and photos. This book belongs on the shelf right next to "Black Hawk Down". Yes, it's that good. I read "Black Hawk Down" recently and while reading Gibbs' book I noticed how both Gibbs and Mark Bowden are able transport the reader to the battle field with relative ease. Civil War reading doesn't get any better than this.

"In the Back of the Deli"
In many cities in the U.S., including such places as Toledo, we stand at Deli counters ordering our cheese from men with heavy accents and lives we know little about. The Georges and Yusefs, Nadias and Sourayas in these bodegas have rich lives we know little about until this collection Through and Through. Geha brings to life this Middle Eastern community, not by only showing how these characters are strangers in a strange land, but also how they are our neighbors as well. We learn a little of Arab customs, something of what it is to be an immigrant. What one values when they are successful and what they hope for when they fail. These stores are human and humane, enlightening and funny. They take the chance for self-irony and even farce. I would recommend Through and Through for enjoyment, for a class in ethnic or immigrant lit, as well as for a source of understanding.

Thy Mystagogy of the Holy Spirit by Patriarch Photios
Published in Paperback by Holy Cross Orthodox Press (January, 1987)
Authors: Joseph P. Farrell and Ddemmetrres Kakavelakkes
Amazon base price: $6.95
Used price: $88.18
Average review score:

Dr. Farrell's introduction is itself classic
Dr. Farrell's translation of Saint Photios' Mystagogy is eloquent and, in this time of renewed interest in the ancient Church, altogether timely. His lengthy introduction, drawing on references as diverse as Plotinus and Paul Tillich, provides the historical, cultural, and theological setting of Saint Photios' controversial treatise. The introductory essay is itself a classic of modern Patristics - the study of the Church Fathers. Dr. Farrell argues that Photios is attacking a fundamental theological trend in Western Christendom which has implications for its entire polity. In this sense he offers the Mystagogy as a prophetic work rather than simply a theoretical one. The Mystagogy is a comprehensive assault on the new culture being created in the West by the addition of the "filioque" clause to the Western Creed. For Saint Photios, this clause represents "all the rash impudence" that the new Europe has to say. Dr. Farrell in his analysis uses the phrase "summation of all theological error". This is not a wishy-washy work of scholarship for the faint-hearted. It packs a punch both in stye and in depth. Still, the brevity of the book makes it accessible for a general audience and rightly so if, as Dr. Farrell argues, Saint Photios' work is of universal import. Hearty reading!

Fascinating account of the life of Stalin
This book was written by a man who suffered unspeakable crimes under Stalin's reign of Communist terror. His insights and often ironic humor are insightful and very interesting. A must-read for those interested in Russian history and the history of Communism and how it affected (and still affects) those in its grip.

The First Fun Tutorial to Introduce Kids Safely to the WWW
Hope your child grows up to be as successful as Bill Gates, butyou'reworried the schools may not have the resources to take your child the distance? Author Gisele Swinson, President of TIMS - Total Information Management Services, and mother of two, has custom-designed an easy, intelligent, and affordable World Wide Web tutorial, TIMS Interactive CyberKids for youths from 8 to 18.

The TIMS Interactive CyberKids Tutorial package comes complete with an easy to follow workbook, and an accompanying diskette, as well as accessible online assistance at the TIMS Web Site. Future projects include a membership to the CyberKids Club, a Web Site just for kids.

The workbook instructions are laid-out in a simple, easy to follow fashion, accompanied by straightforward graphics. Swinson doesn^Rt talk down to children, nor over their heads. She understands that it takes more than smarts and an innate curiosity for kids to discover the world that awaits them on the World Wide Web (although it helps!)

While researching her tutorial project, Swinson discovered that while other books may teach adults how to access the Internet and surf the Web, there is precious little for the young ones who are being asked to forge ahead into the next century, with at least a basic understanding of the 'Net, and especially the World Wide Web.

Swinson says, "I was fed up searching for any decent book that would help Harrison, my 8 year old son, get on to the World Wide Web at his own pace and level of comfort. In my research the educational books I encountered were too generic. They may have recounted the history of the Internet or described how browsers came about, but most kids don't care. They found those books off-putting. They want to get onto the 'net, and have something more user-friendly for researching their homework, playing interactive games, or for chatting with pals across the globe. There just weren't enough hands on, step-by-step instructions and activities regarding specific tasks that the kids will encounter in the real cyberworld.

"But while my quest for the perfect instructional Web book was a disaster, in the interim, I discovered an obscure article, buried in an Internet magazine, which categorized the top 50 educational web sites for kids. I thought that was GREAT! And I simply took the concept a step further and created the tutorial, the diskette, and the web site.

As a mom, she is committed to providing only SAFE access for children, to the Web. With that in mind, she has personally checked and rechecked with individual Web Site owners, for the exact suitability of each Web Site, before recommending them in the tutorial. TIMS Interactive CyberKids dedicates itself to quality, with frequent online updates. Plus, when the final project is successfully completed, each child will receive a personalized TIMS Interactive CyberKids Certificate of Achievement!

To Live With Honor, to Die With Honor: Documents from the Warsaw Ghetto Underground Archives

Author: Joseph Kermish
Amazon base price: $60.00

Humanity at its best...
This is THE historical document on the Warsaw Ghetto. Inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto documented their lives on paper. Knowing full well that they would probably not survive the war, they buried the documents in 3 milkcans. After the war, they found two of the three. This book is, as far as I know, the only part of the archive that has been translated in to English and published. Documents include everything from a program of a children's play to studies on starvation and copies of Nazi edicts. Hopefully more volumes will follow.

Great help for planning a Catholic Wedding
I have borrowed this book from friends to look at and now have one from my church as I plan my wedding. The one I have I can't keep so I decided to get my own copy! I love the information and readings in it and the "comments for couples" are great to read with your future spouse to discuss things.
