Very refreshing and hopeful information
I was a little reluctant to read this book, because of the title, but I discovered that the content is scholarly and intuitive, and provided me with insightful information about Christianity, based solely upon the Bible. It opened my eyes to Christian doctrines and practices which are not Biblical. These practices rather than assisting me in my life have always worked against my own personal well-being and happiness. The book tipped me off that Christianity is a social institution and, as such, can not satisfy the individual needs I have for spiritual life and personal relationship. I was encouraged by the book to take drastic steps in my own life. As a result, my marriage is better. I have set proper priorities for work, personal goals, and relationships. One of the best things I learned from the book is that tithing is not portrayed by Christianity as it was meant to be in the Bible. My personal finances have drastically improved because I no longer feel the need to give ten percent of my income to the church. With all of this, I have a better understanding of who God is and feel closer to him.

Against the Death Penalty: The Relentless Dissents of Justices Brennan and Marshall
Published in Hardcover by Northeastern University Press (April, 1996)
Author: Michael Mello

Average review score:

The two supreme court justices who never voted for death
This is a promising book that is thoroughly researched.

Unlike every other supreme court justice that has had the opportunity, neither Justice Brennan nor Justice Marshall ever voted to affirm a death sentence.

The first third of the book covers familiar territory as it recounts the lives and possible influences on Brennan's and Marshall's approach to the law, including their consistent opposition to capital punishment.

The remaining two thirds of the book tries to place Brennan's and Marshall's approach of dissenting for the same reason for about 20 years, in historical and jurisprudential context. It does not fully succeed. In some sense, neither Brennan nor Marshall were writing to recapture the past or to have death penalty cases decided according to established legal approaches; they wrote for the future. They believed that at some point the rest of this country would "mature" and, like them, renounce the death penalty as a legitimate penal sanction. It would have been more meaningful if the book contained a detailed examination of Brennan's and Marshall's influence on capital punishment in the 20th century -- both nationally and internationally, notwithstanding their "relentless dissents." That is, I would have desired that the book look in detail in what occassion their dissents eventually became the law of the land, or the compromises that had to be made by the other justices to accommodate or rebut their views.

The book could use a little more editing, as in several places the thoughts contained in some paragraphs are repeated a few pages later.

poems for the fire-place?
This is an attempt to correct some of the points made in the KIRKUS review. Before a critic even starts to express an opinion, he or she should present the contents of the book under review accurately and scrupulously. The KIRKUS critic, however, sets off with generalizations, backed up by blatant misinterpretation and inaccuracy. Commenting on the poem "Brief Encounter" he mentions the poet hearing a 'hummingbird trill'. But the bird in question clearly is a nightingale, and hummingbirds do not trill anyway. The most casual reading of theses poems quickly reveals that they are not concerned with 'sacralizing' od presenting a 'comfortable'or 'comforting' view of nature. Already the title of the book suggests that the contents will be anything but reassuring. The poet is not looking at nature for comfort but reflecting on how marginalized nature has become. For example, in "Red Admirals" there is a description of a car passing over butterflies which have been killed by a previous vehicle but then are lifted briefly off the road by the rushing air. In the poem about geese the writer is again placing what is left of nature against the background of human destructiveness: nature is not seen directly, but through glass; it is like something registered, if at all, behind a screen. The KIRKUS reviewer does actually note that the illustrations are 'somber', but doesn't seem to have thought that there might be some connection between the dark pictures and the mood of the poems. I found his notes extremely ill-informed and misleading; the book in question, however, highly recommendable.

America's retreat from victory; the story of George Catlett Marshall

Yes---this is what he said
Much has been made of this. Sen. McCarthy had some things to say about the so-called good general. Eisenhower went ape, as they said then, and the establishment press pontificated---but these words, written by Forrest McDonald, are worth a view. Where was Marshall on Pearl Harbor day? Why did he consistently side with Mao? Read this for a decidely different view from the conventional one.

America's teachers : an introduction to education

Excellent Introduction to American Education
I am a university professor and dean of education. I used Dr. Newman's book during the spring 1998 semester in my Introduction to American Education course. My students enjoyed the easy reading and the manner in which Dr. Newman presented the material.

The book is quite up-to-date and deals with current and historical educational issues in an honest and up-front manner.

I highly recommend this book to anyone teaching an introduction to education course.

The one drawback is the quality of the supporting materials. The teacher's guide is not well constructed and at the time I used the text, no test back or items were available.

The Biafran Genocide
I do not really wish to write a review as such. However, I would like to correct the impression that have always been attached to what happened in Nigeria between 1967-70. What happened was not a civil war. The war wasn't a civil one, it was actually a genocidal war against a people who had refused to participate in the corruption that went on at the time in Nigeria. Of course, since the collapse of Biafra, the true nature of things in Nigeria have become clearly known by those of us in this country who have no way of knowing goes on in that part of the world. This is the impression that I got reading this book?

Good Starting Point, Technically and Pastorally
This is the second edition of a very good book on Marriage Annulments in the Code of Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church, ten years after the latest Code of Canon Law of 1983, went into effect. If you are using this book to consider or take some sort of action in your personal life, go first to the small section in the first chapter entitled "The Tribunal as Pastoral Ministry." This sets the tone of this book, one that is both informational and pastoral. The author's examination of the types of questions a Tribunal will ask exhibit a good knowledge of the grounds the Church uses for examining an annulment case. He also uses some good forms that one might see during the annulment process. His discussion of witness forms is especially important. Witnesses are necessay to a case and they can sometimes be the deal breaker. The extremes are witnesses who try too hard to help you with their answers, to witnesses who tell you they sent their questionaire back, but it must have gotten lost in the mail. This part of the book gives a witness encouragemnet in the role and practical advice as well. The only fault I found with this book is two occasions of talking about a "failed marriage" and why a marriage "failed". I think such negative talk does not belong in today's world of no-fault divorce, let alone in the healing process of a Church annulment. In the next edition, and I hope there is one, that reference should be adjusted. Outside of that, this is a very good book.
