Bleeding Twilight
Published in Paperback by Booklocker.com (May, 2001)
Author: Joseph Armstead

This is The Stuff!
Get BLEEDING TWILIGHT. Period. This book is so fast-paced and so intersting and has so much going on that its a shame there aren't a million readers for it. This one delivers the goods. I read Mr. Armstead's NOCTURNES AND NEON, to which this book is supposedly a "prequel", and I thought that it was the vampire novel of the year. BLEEDING TWILIGHT, while only half as long as NOCTURNES AND NEON, is just as good. Don't hesitate: if you love good vampire fiction and are tired of the same old cliches and Goth-pretensions, then this is the book to get!

Scientific Vampires with Bad Attitudes
I really wish this book were longer. I understand that it is related to another longer book featuring some of the same characters. That's really my only complaint. Otherwise this was an exciting and dark story full of danger, suspense and lots of new twists on the cliched old theme of vampires in modern society. Mr. Armstead's vampires are arrogant and murderous and very sophisticated, more like rich corporate raiders than drooling hellspawn.

I like the difference!!

Highly recommended. Give the book a try -- if you're like me, you'll want more!

Blood & Roses: The Vampire in 19th Century Literature (Creature Classics Ser.))

Amazon base price: $15.98

Good stories, bizarre introduction
Once you get past the introduction and into the actual stories, this is a reasonable enough compilation of vampire stories. Unfortunately, the 'introduction' fails to introduce the collection adequately; it looks more like an essay on the topic "Vampires in fiction as subversion of the Oppressive Male Patriarchy: discuss"... The purpose of an introduction is to introduce the stories that follow it; the closest Ms. Gladwell's introduction comes is to occasionally draw on examples from the stories to support her own points.

While sexuality is a major part of the mystique of the vampire, Ms. Gladwell does her readers a disservice by concentrating on it to the exclusion of all other considerations; also, by treating the stories as supporting material for her essay rather than the other way around. In comparison, Christopher Frayling's anthology 'The Vampyre: Lord Ruthven to Count Dracula' has a much more balanced and informative introduction.

WOW!
I loved this book. It strikes the gothic romantic in all of us!!

Older than you think
Amazon shows this as a Feb 99 title but inside jacket indicates 1994....and it shows. Has some good tactical systems but "introduces" lead tracking software as something up-and-coming....

I would recommend SPIN Selling in lieu of this title.

These techniques make good managers great!
I've seen the benefits of working Joe Petrone's systems in the field. This book was written from his hands-on-experience, and provides valuable techniques for every manager- whether in sales or any other business capacity These techniques make good managers great!

Cap 'N Eri

A look at Cape Cod at the Turn of the 19/20 Century
I enjoyed this book tremendously. While the story is based in fictional 'Orham', it is describes the town of Chatham quite well. Lincoln actually lived there for some time. Captain Eri reminds me of my grandfather, who was a retired sea captain and lived in Chatham after moving from P'town. The books are entertaining and well written.

A SALTY TALE OF THE ROMANCE OF 3 RETIRED SEA CAPTAINS.
JOE LINCOLN IS A MASTER OF ROMANTIC NEW ENGLAND STORIES, USUALLY CENTERING AROUND RETIRED SEA FARING MEN AND JUST AS USUAL, MASTERS OR CAPTAINS OF SAILING VESSELS. THIS PARTICULAR YARN IS ABOUT THREE SUCH MEN, CAPTAINS ERI, PEREZ AND JERRY. ERI IS THE SENSIBLE ONE KEEPING THE TWO OTHERS FROM MAKING COMPLETE DISASTERS OF THEIR ROMANTIC INTRIGUES. ALTHOUGH THIS SOUNDS LIKE A SIMPLE PREMISE FOR A STORY, THINGS GET COMPLETELY OUT OF HAND AS IT UNWINDS, WHILE LINCOLN'S FERTILE MANAGEMENT OF THE PLOT KEEPS THE READER ON PINS AND NEEDLES THROUGH TO THE LAST PAGE. THE DELIGHTFUL NEW ENGLAND SETTING ADDS JUST THE PROPER LOCAL COLOR TO MAKE THIS BOOK COMPLETELY ENJOYABLE. EVEN THOUGH THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN ABOUT THE TURN OF THE LAST CENTURY, IT HOLDS THE INTEREST OF THE READER AS THE MILLENIUM APPROACHES.

Casey: From the Oss to the CIA
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (October, 1990)
Author: Joseph E. Persico
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Great book on a complex character!
Casey was a very complex character. He was always on the edge -- always straddling that ethical line (and frequently crossing it). The book is fair and it gives a good overview of the former chief of two much feared agencies: the SEC and the CIA.

An informative and balanced look at a controversial American
Persico provides a balanced look at the deceased former Director of Central Intelligence. William Casey has served as both a lightning rod for criticism of the Reagan Administration's proactive foreign policy and as a right-wing hero. Unfortunately both of these views display an amazing inability to take into consideration all of the facts. The author presents Casey in an objective light, showing that the former OSS man often did what he felt was right for the country but in a fashion that just as often went outside the rule of law. Most importantly, Persico gives a more balanced and accurate view of Casey's role in the Iran-Contra scandal than the view presented in Bob Woodward's Secret Wars. Anyone interested in the career of one of the most respected and disrespected of America's former spy chiefs is encouraged to read Casey, from the OSS to the CIA.

DESIGNED FOR BOTH DOCTORS AND STUDENTS
Accessible and highly useful, the format of "Cecil Essentials of Medicine" is unique. This is one of the few broad-scope medical texts, which used simple language to present advanced information. The book is dynamic; and very easy to understand. Its strengths lie in the methodological manner with which it tackled clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and therapeutics. It gives detailed information in each case, without dabbling into anything that is unnecessary.
Anybody who reads this book will appreciate the depth of its coverage. It is a quality designed: a valuable compilation with both doctors and students in mind.

the right focus
I am a 4th year medical student and have referred to this book contantly on my rotations. i find that the chapters were lucid and covered just the right amount of depth for each topic. Best of all, the authors focused on all the clinically relevant points of each disease which is a must for the busy clinician. Get it now!

better than the Kirkus review account
Here's hoping that you didn't already read the above review by Kirkus because it manages to give away the entire book in a few short sentences. Though it wasn't a work of art, it was a good and quick read. The author hits his groove when he talks about the joy of setting sail out on the open sea -- even for a non-mariner, the details of managing a sailboat are quite clear and easy to follow. There is the mandatory storm scene (quite well done though) and then the revelation from one of the brothers that he really isn't plotting to Walker Island at all. I'd rather not ruin the drama, but there are some good brother to brother bonding scenes and some of the scenes were well described. I'm not sure why if the author's life so closely parallels that of his characters that he didn't just make this a non-fiction account. The confusing forward seems to tell us that the account IS real, but then at the end it seems that it's a novel after all. A solid and enjoyable read overall.

Change of Course
This is the first book I've read by Joseph Klemper. It was like no other I've read. The characters were so real I felt like I knew them personally, and the story line is not what I expected.I put myself in Joe & Jack's place & wondered what I would do in a situation like that. I'm wondering if part or any of this story is non-fiction since Joe sounds just like Mr. Klemper. An excellent read.

Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce: A Poem

Author: Robert Penn Warren

Average review score:

Another fine work from a true poetic master.
Robert Penn Warren, Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce (Random House, 1983)

Warren's penultimate book of poetry, published as he was nearing eighty, is less something to be criticized or examined as it is to be learned from. Warren, seventy-five at the time of this long poem's writing, had been in the game for over a half century, had won the Pulitzer three times (as well as most other major prizes known to man), and was one of the last century's most influential writers on many fronts. Forget nitpicking, and just learn from one of the few Americans who has truly earned the title of "master" in the poetic realm. ***

Beautiful & poignant monument to a slaughtered man of peace.
I rode a motorcycle through the Dakotas, Wyoming, and Montana some years ago, and became sensitized to the tragic plight of the Native American Indians. Robert Penn Warren has created a beautiful and lasting "monument" to this unsung hero of peace who was slaughtered by the United States Cavalry. This tiny book is similar to Gutzon Borglum's monument to Chief Crazy Horse -- only a different medium. I would give it a highest recommendation for enlightenment reading and to keep close forever as a visionary friend.

First Novel is a Winner
Waiting breathlessly for the arrival of first time published Joe Sanstrums novel, A Childs Avenger, I was not disappointed when I tore through it. This "who done it" captured me from the first page. Mr. Sanstrum's raw, gritty , in-your-face style leads the reader thru a series of twists ( of a knife ) and turns ( whos going to be the next victim ). The subject matter is not for the faint of heart, yet it begs to be told. If you are looking for a great new quick read this is the book to purchase. Thumbs way up for Joseph Sanstrums A Childs Avenger. I look forward to future works from this budding new author ! WAY TO GO JOE !

Dark, Fast Paced Thrilling Ride!!
Mr. Sunstrum has the reader cheering for the "Avenger" and racing through the book to find out who it is. A wonderful wodunit in the likes of Patterson. Could not put it down till I figured who the Avenger was. I am telling all my friends to put this book on their list of "MUST GET" because Mr. Sunstrum is going to be very big, very soon....

Heart-warming
After the death of his baby sister, David's parents struggle to maintain their marriage, and hire on a Jamaican housekeeper named Clara. As his parents separate and divorce, David befriends Clara and sees her as the one person he can count on, but even she isn't spared from his misbehavior. Clara is hiding a secret about the death of her own son back in Jamaica, and David is determined to find out what it is before he loses her from his life. "Clara's Heart" is a big-hearted story that has great moments of comedy that nearly get lost in the maelstrom of melodrama. Clara is the only likeable character, and it's rather bewildering why she stays with this family, even though she says she's staying to help David. "Clara's Heart" isn't a terrible book, but neither is it the greatest. It was made into a movie starring Whoopi Goldberg.

Powerful enough to overcome images of the movie
Having seen Whoopi Goldberg as Clara in the movie version of Clara's Heart, I assumed that when I finally got around to reading the book, I would keep thinking of the actors from the movie. This was not the case.

David, Clara, Bill and Leona are all deeper and more vivid characters in the book. Though I loved the movie version, the written words prove to be much more compelling. As usual, the movie edits out the incredible words written by Olshan. Though parts of the movie are taken word for word from the book, much of the story and significant passages are missing in the movie.

Having owned the movie for many years and after repeated viewings, I really wasn't too enthusiastic about reading the book. But once I started reading the novel, I couldn't put it down. It was as if I was reading something totally new, even though I assumed I would find it completely familiar.

It's no surprise the novel is far superior to the movie, though as movies go, the movie version isn't bad. If you can have only one version of Clara's Heart....take the book!
