A superb daily missal
The St. Joseph's Missal is, in my opinion, the all time great daily missal. The organization is simple yet complete. It provides those of us who wish to follow the readings of the Mass with exact readings from the Lectionary. If it has any fault, it is the binding, but this can be overlooked in a book that offers so much of a positive nature.

This is a First Communion Set
As a First Communion gift set, this is beautiful. It consists of a hardcover-bound Children's Missal and matching Rosary with gift card in a lovely presentation box.

I wish I'd known that when I ordered. There is nothing in Amazon's description to say this is what you're getting. I thought I was getting a set of Missals (Sunday and Weekday). I'm returning my set as it did not meet my expectations.

A little local insight
The book itself is a fascinating piece of local history, as well as a captivating true crime story. It illustrates all too well the failures of the American Justice System in this case. I found the story especially intriguing because it took place in my hometown, not far from where I live. The story is an amazingly detailed timeline tracking Hatcher through his many run-ins with Law Enforcement all over the West and Midwest. His sheer luck and the unabashed recklessness of the authorities he encountered are beyond comprehension. For anyone interested in Law Enforcement and/or its blunders this book is a must, and even if Law Enforcement does not pique your interest I think this book might.

An objective account
This book is a non-sensationalistic, rather fair account of Joseph Stalin's life. The author goes out of his way to try to find actual documentation and explanations for Stalin's rise to power and subsequent life as dictator of the Soviet Union. This work is refreshingly free of the anti-communist hysteria of other more famous accounts. The only thing that rings untrue in the book is the possible 6 million victims of one year's famine in 1932- but look up the reference and we find that Mr. Mcneal used Robert Conquest as a source, thereby negating the aforementioned incredible number.

An Engrossing Picture of Stalin and the Russian Revolution
It's a shame that this book is out of print. It's an excellent book by an excellent author. This book contains all of the things you would expect from a biography of Stalin, including all of the stories of his childhood, etc. What makes this book interesting and controversial, however, is that Tucker dares to explore what effect his childhood might have had on his future personality (always dangerous ground for a historian) and detail his motives as well as his tactics in the struggle for power in the post-Lenin Soviet Union.

That said, it should be noted that, as is common with Tucker's books, this is the middle book in Tucker's biography of Stalin. It's focus is on his rise to power and the consolidation of that power in the Soviet Union, although it does deal slightly with other periods. Also useful is the chapter on Lenin. A very useful book for anyone interested in Russian studies, as Stalin was one of the shaping figures of the Soviet Union.

Very well written but somewhat lacking
I found the book at the same time gripping and disappointing. Very well-written and readable, it contains a number of gems, such as discussions of the complicated relationship between Stalin and Lenin and its shocking conclusion between Lenin's second stroke and his death, and the effect of Alexander Blok's poem "The Scythians" on the pre-revolution Russian intelligentia. But revelations -- or even details -- concerning other critical events such as the purges of the mid-Thirties seem entirely lacking. Here, Deutscher simply lists the names of a few of the old guard who were annihilated and sparsely sums the whole episode thus: "It is not necessary to assume that he acted from sheer cruelty or lust for power. He may be given the dubious credit of the sincere conviction that what he did saved the interests of the revolution and that he alone interpreted those interests aright." (page 378) Absolutely no description of any thought process by Stalin as to who would die is given; no hint of the stories of Stalin personally going over lists of names to mark the condemned is offered. Likewise, the deaths and ruined families of these thousands are passed over and we are given this in their stead: "The real mass purges were carried out without the thunder and lightning of publicity, without confession of the victims, and often without any trial whatsoever. He sent thousands to their deaths and tens of hundreds of thousands into prisons and concentration camps." (page 380)

What the book does offer is a detailed and easily-followed history of the Russian revolutions of 1907 and 1917, the subversion and takeover of the latter by the Bolsheviks, and the major (and sometimes minor) events that followed until Stalin's death. But even here important events are left out; the murder of the Romanovs is not even mentioned in passing and the Western miltary interventions aimed at toppling the Reds are only hinted at. Trotsky's complex role and his relationship with Stalin is handled well throughout, but his murder warrants a single paragraph, as if it happens off stage, with no hint of Stalin's inner compunction or outer reactions to the death of his lifelong nemesis.

Overall, the book is a good read. But the reader who expects to pry into the personal, inner workings of Stalin is likely, as I was, to be sorely disappointed.

No-nonsense guide to doing CORRECT auto restoration
This is a no-nonsense guide to dealing with the concourse winning restoration. One thing I like the most about the book is the detail sections on everything from specific engine parts to welding fundamentals and tricks, to the common, simple language of how to do the job right. It was updated in 1992, so most of the paint and chemical parts are pretty up to date. Lots of pictures staged throughout the processes, with USEFUL captions. The text coveres mostly American Iron from the 20s through the 40s, and suffers from some of the specifics of the era of thicker sheet metal and old-style paints.

A good textbook in statistical optics
Since I'm an optics graduate student beginning my research on image through atmosphere turbulance, I'm eager to find a book of statistic optics which can be both a classical one and easy of self-studying, in fact, I don't want to waste a lot of time jumping from one book to another trying to get the right one for me. One friend of mine introduced this book to me, also because it is written by goodman, whose book "Introduction to Fourier Optics" is one of the best books I've ever read, I did have a try on this book, "Statistical Optics". It's really well written and good organized, I read all through the book, especially on the chapter focus on the theory of partial coherence, imaging with partially coherent light, and atmospheric degradations of images. I obtained not only some basic concepts from it, even got some inspiration for the research work I'm doing. Thank you, Prof. Goodman. Thank you for offering another classical optics textbook to the optics student!

Somewhat outdated now, but still has great information.
I used this book for many school papers and while it is somewhat old, the specifics it gives in stealth airframe materials are outstanding. I highly reccommend it also for its history of steath programs starting with WWII
