Sometimes we need reminders of the truly important things, remembering that our wisdom and advances are the result of standing on the shoulders of giants. Dr. Hsu's book provides quite a few shoulders, with maxims from a variety of writers and philsophers, neatly categorized in alphabetical order by topic. In addition, he provides warm anecdotes and insightful personal observances of his own. Subjects from "fear" and "anger" to "love" and "faith" offer several points for reflection and discussion. In an age of moral confusion and scattered thinking, this book's common-sense messages are most welcome.

After reading this book, I could not stop thinking about the story "Bloodlines," among others. This story impressed me because of its overwheming tension, yet it is tension that is subdued and subtle. It's not a nostalgic story about growing up on a Pennsylvania farm, but a gripping story about a father's violent nature, a mother's suspicious and complacent demeanor, the death of the narrator's brother; this story transcends other stories that merely strike us as idyllic. The ending is the best part.

There are other stories I like: "The Fifth Mrs. Hughes" is quirky, funny, and delightful. "Expatriates" is about an Amish Dutch boy, who jumps the fence and teaches the narrator something about loyalty and honesty. "Shandorsky's Mother" is about a mother who writes a poem to teach her son about family.

I recommend this book; it's funny and sad.

I have used Harrisons since the eighties. I am a Clinical Psychologist dealing with patients who often have multiple medical problems. Harrison's is a complete solution to getting up to the date medical information, not only the book and CD but also the Website. It is expensive, but if you only ever buy one medical text, this has to be the one.

This book is a rich resource on a wide range of issues associated with the nearly 500 years of growth and transformation of Havana. It is a seminal work that belongs on any Cubanologist's bookshelf, and an essential text for anyone reading to prepare for a trip to the island. It is also an important work for those with only a passing interest in the specifics of Havana's built environment, but who are interested in urban history, architectural forms, state socialism, or Cuba's post-Soviet transition.

This is an outstanding anthology !! It includes articles from a very broad spectrum of Hawaiian writers, both contemporary and historical. I've never seen a compilation of authors like this one. If you want to get a good feel for the variety of experience and styles that Hawaiian authors have to offer, this is THE book to start with. Some of the authors included are: John Dominis Holt, Katherine Luomala, Rubellite Kawena Johnson, Samuel Elbert, Mary Pukui, Gavin Daws, A. Grove Day, Yoshiko Matsuda, Cathy Song, etc.

As a scholar of humour and wit in the instrumental music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, I found this book to be of the highest standards. Wheelock writes with intelligence and charm and moves through the issue of Haydn's joviality with logic and with good pace. She examines the need to make jokes in music and coherently explains the 18th century view on humour and wit from a literary perspective. The musical examples are well presented and very clearly explained and the essay is completed with guts and style. She is never afraid to criticise and this is yet another feather in the cap of this fine musicoligist.

This book is hysterical. It is a straight forward book listing categorically what books to avoid based on their titles. I highly recommend you find this book and read it!

Lisa's "Heads or tails": Story of Terror, real torture, and ultimate survival is a balanced and well-written chronicle of April 4th 1991 terror story that millions of Americans watched the deadly match on their televisions(from the outside). The author tell the inside story with the unfolded and unexpected events that no human being could imagine.

In conclusion, Lisa's story deserves Spielberg's attention; This is a tier-one book...buy it.
