Fastmoving story, beautifully read
Richard Rohan reads this complicated story about a sensational murder case in a sparsely populated area of the Adirondacks, where killing is usually confined to the slaughter of moose, deer or fish. In books on tape a lot depends on the reader. A fine reader can make a poor book sound good. Rohan's an excellent reader.

When authorities are called to the scene of a spectacularly gruesome murder of an elderly couple by their retarded grandson, Jonathan Hamilton, they immediately assume that he's the perpetrator. The assumption is seemingly verified by his confession when taken into custody. As the story unfolds, though, the actions of those authorities come under question. Evidence such as blood on Jonathan's forehead and hands and bloody footprints solidify opinions against the young man.

Matthew Fielder, a big-city criminal defense lawyer drop-out, especially trained to handle "death cases," is assigned to defend Jonathan and the more he learns about the case, the more he's convinced that Jonathan is innocent. The battle lines are drawn and both sides go for the jugular as the trial commences, its fury fed by the media into a frenzy.

A chilling story, laced with legal detail and feisty, memorable characters, FLAT LAKE IN WINTER is just the tale to see you through a quiet, fall evening. Klempner's legal fiction compares pretty favorably with Grisham's.

Surprisingly good
While the 'legal thriller' genre gets larger exponentially every day, it seems harder and harder to find a really good read - which makes this book a real find. What I loved about the book was its original narrative style, bouncing from an omniscient third person to a sort of research persona, almost as if most of it is a true crime book written after the fact. It gave the book an air of authenticity that was added to by the author's obvious knowledge of the legal system.

Even without the unique narrative style and the well-researched legal environment, it is still a book that is marginally better than most books of this type. Overall, a very worthwhile read.

This Author Is A Real Find!
Because I read three or four books a week, it is rare that I find a book thoroughly engaging in both substance and style. The style is unusual and fascinating; the author does not "write" in the usual sense. Klempner CONFIDES. It is as if you were sitting in a chair across from this author as he tells you the story, complete with "inside information" and amusing asides. In fact, the first paragraph of the book begins this process and I was captivated by the author's intimacy with the reader. The plot is not very original but it is solid. The ending is a heart-tugger, completely in line with the aauthor's style. I will definitely read anything Klempner writes; reading his book has made me a fan and a friend of his.

Should've been called "How to Build 35 Great Clock Cabinets"
Maybe I'm crazy, but I've always considered a clock to be the inner workings - springs, pendulums, and such. This book doesn't tell you how to build those - it is merely a woodworking book that talks about the design of the cabinets that house clocks. Not for a horologist.

Entry level
I bought this book based on the title, which for me was a mistake. I was expecting drawing and guidance on making reproductions of time honored classics. While it is helpful it lacks the details about the originals that are needed to built future classics.

Former Student of author
I have this book and was looking for other books by Mr. Daniele since I had him as a teacher years ago at Ludlow. One of the best classes I've ever taken. He is a master craftsman with wood and metal, and certainly respected and admired the colonial period. He conveyed this respect to his classes, and through his books, I am able to convey it to my sons. The drawings and instructions are clear and easily used by all levels of woodworker. Lots of photos of finished peices. Ideal for the home hobbiest.

Gimbutas is great
This is a truly wonderful book by a now deceased author. Marija Gimbutas was a fine scholar (chair of European Archeology at UCLA), and if she were alive today, would gladly take part in the storm of response that her ideas on prehistoric religion have inspired. All such scholarly theories require work and refinement, and the ideas presented in this book are no exception. There is, however, no other single text on the subject of early human religion that I think is more important. Read it, love it, and give it to all your friends.

beautiful collection of ancient European images and symbols.
This book is a must-have for anyone interested in symbolism and imagery, as it presents some of the oldest decorative markings ever scratched into stone, bone, and wood. Most of the images, reproduced in line drawings and black-and-white photos, are taken from Neolithic European village sites dating back as far as 7,000 B.C. Thus they are, for the most part, a product of agricultural cultures. However, there is a striking similarity between some of these marks and those found on relics from Paleolithic hunter-gatherer sites, some of which are shown in this book.

The link between the images from Neolithic and Paleolithic sites arises at least in part from those cultures' shared worship of the Goddess. Gimbutas manages to present the world-view of the Goddess people by careful attention to the symbols, their meanings, and the cultural context of the objects on which they were found.

I found it difficult to read this book straight through. Rather, I took it chapter by chapter, in a non-linear way. As each chapter focuses on a separate group of symbols, such as Net, Streams, Snake, etc., it works well to pick the symbol you feel drawn to and read from that for a while. That way, the symbols become part of your symbol vocabulary in an organic way, through slow digestion. Reading quickly through the book will give you a left-brain overview of these marks, but they probably will not resonate in the psyche much.

This book is wonderful for textile artists, potters, painters, poets, anyone interested in creating from the deeper, farther parts of our shared history. These are powerful symbols for study, which come alive when given careful attention.

Frost and thunder upon humanity's fruiting tree-flowers
Gimbutas has unsheathed from history's husk, the weed-seed of modern thorns. She lays bare the dark battle obsessed mind-set that bruised and nearly rooted out 'the adoration of life principle' that drove the path of Europe's ancestors, and eventually entangled it with vengeance. The briars were invasive Indo-European peoples, who razed the united civilization of prehistoric Europe to near oblivion. They were a war-hungry, unrefined, pirating people from the Russian steppes. These people stole metallury technologies from Europe and twisted them from plough-share to sword, literally. Gimbutas is not the first, but the most studious, in piecing together the signature significances within uncovered archeological artifacts that assert such evidence. Many earlier archeologists had already captured the story within old stone, and explained it as Gimbutas does, prior to her revelations-'Man in Prehistory', Prof. Chard, Univ. of Wisc. 1969, and a score of others similarly acclaimed. New dendrochronology and improved carbon-dating techniques using centuries old rare pines have now proven her time-lines; disproving the sequential-inventions concept of her opponents. What truly makes this book incredible, although,is not the historical revision(others pay more to this); it is the incredible vision she gleans of their world-view through symbol-relations she has belaboured over. this book is tribute to Europe's 3500-year fruition of peaceful prosperity, derived from seed of another world-view ( and early humanity's earliest religion concept, the 70,000 years of a God who gives Birth and nurtures!

Pretentious and Preposterous
The main character's name is "Goody" and the love interest is called "Dreama" and another character is called "Peanut". If the author can't imagine these characters as real people with real names, how can the reader be expected to? The writing itself is quite striking, but the story is weak, aimless, and there is no dramatic tension at all. It seems like the author knew this and tried to bluff us with a lot of heavy breathing and embarrisingly over-the-top grandiloquence. Like a violent empty cartoon, but written as if it were Moby-Dick.

Fantastic book, stupid ending.
This luminous, riveting and maddening book had me in thrall until the last fifty pages when it degenerates into a Rambo style mess. Oh, but when it's good it's terrific, I'm anxious to read this author's other books.

Fine work
This is a well crafted book, not the usual word processed [stuff] that passes for popular fiction these days. It is a evocative, dark, literate slice of Americana. Not reccomended for those who like their reading to crank along at the pace of a made for T.V movie. Pinckney has a fine eye for character and detail. If you liked the movie "Sexy Beast", you will probably enjoy this book as well.

Too Focused on the Analysis Software
I was very impressed with an earlier edition of Bowles' book as he had some very well-explained design examples (the best I had seen on design of sheet-pile walls). When I purchased this edition, I was dismayed to find that the text is very much centered around the software included with the book. In some cases the author provides sample computer output rather than illustrative design examples. This text left me regretting making the purchase, and hoping to find a used copy of one of the earlier editions.

A Bible on Foundation Design.
I have used this book since its 2nd edition and have always been impressed by this book. It is now fully metric thank God and expanded to cover just about all possible foundation and retaining wall problems. A must for all practicing engineers.

Classic on Foundation Design
I have used this text book since its 2nd edition and was always impressed by this book. Relevant for both students and the practicing engineer, it is an authority on foundation and retaining wall design. In my opinion all structural engineers should have a copy of this book.

good for reference, not for exam prep
This book is laden with stuff useful for anyone dealing with networks on a support level. However using this book as a primary source is a bad bad idea. The spelling, grammar, and factual errors left me with a "duh" a few times. The chapters are out of sequence as far as any type of learning curve (more often than not other chapters are referenced to explain something that's being explained in the beginning chapters). It's very long winded too. I doubt anyone who has read this from cover to cover once can remember nitty gritty details when they hit the last page. The software test really bites too. The questions are WAY easier than what the real test covers. I'm sorry to say this book is out of the return policy timeframe for me. Get the ExamCram book instead.

This book helped very minimal!!
I read this book, I took the practice exams cd that was included with the book. AND IT WAS TERRIBLE!!! The basic stuff was barely on the NETWORK+ exam. I think that Mike Meyer's Passport was even better than this bible book. I do not recommend this book at all. It just goes through some of the stuff but it is very redundant. I failed the first time I took the NETWORK+ because I changed a couple of answers at the end but then the next day I took it again, I passed with flying colors. I would recommend getting definitely the mike meyer's passport to network+ and another book besides this one as the main source.

Good content -- but too many typos!
Though I have found much useful info in this book, and like the practice exams and additional tools on the CD, the many typos and errors (including incomplete sentences) make it difficult to read. I think whoever did the proofreading (if anyone?) must've been asleep.

I was familiar with many of the elements and concepts beforehand, but I've had a hard time grasping newer or unfamiliar subjects due to the many mistakes.

I will definitely be using other materials to study with.

Filled with myths and omissions
Practically every sentence in the book is twisted and there are manifold untruths and omissions on every page; therefore, all I could do was try to keep track of some of it. (Go to the Exit & Support Network Recovery Page to see the full details.) The worst thing beyond the untruths is the author's obvious lack of feeling for the abuse, suffering and trauma the members and exiters have endured.

Almost all of the important dates for significant happenings; i.e., when the WCG leaders met with evangelicals are cleverly omitted. The author tells the world that the WCG is "Trinitarian" now, but his mention of the Holy Spirit in the book approaches zero. (To this day I haven't heard members of the Worldwide Church of God admit that they consider God a "Trinity".)

I consider this book the greatest deception a cult has pulled off in this century. I hope more people research the facts and let the truth speak for itself!

Exit & Support Network

Additional reading is required
In order to fully understand this title additional reading isrequired. Many unauthorized changes have occured in the last few yearsthat cannot be properly understood unless we have the whole story. For the missing side of this story, the title: "Malachis's Message to God's Church today" is offered gratis. This subject is too important not do ones own research. The Revelation is freely available (as it always has been), to those who value the truth.

An honest and compelling story
Tkach has laid it all on the line in this book. I am sure that it was not an easy book to write, as he was involved in much of what this church was about, both before its "conversion" and after. The charts were especially helpful, as it helped me to better understand where this church's roots lay. In some places the book bogged down a bit, as some of the details seemed to be somewhat redundant. But it did not diminish the powerful story as told by the church's current leader. I am sorry to see that it is now out of print--can it be that this story is not well received by the general Christian population?

Not even close to YMOYL
Should be subtitled, "How Two Seattle Yuppies Retired Early on 3.5K a Month". This book contains some helpful info, but I was hoping to see someone with a negative net worth pay off their debts and become FI. What I got was the story of a couple of yuppies saying, "Whoa, were worth a bundle and if we refuse to pay for our kids' college we can retire early". Not too impressive to me. I would not read this book if I were looking for material on voluntary simplicity. Why does Vicki Robin endorse this book?

Good price but not very useful
We read Duane Elgins excellent book Voluntary Simplicity decades ago, and would simply caution that this book Getting A :Life will probably appeal to those who have lots of money and really do not have to worry about making ends meet. For those who are on some type of a fixed income. or those with middle class incomes in a precarious economy it doesn't have much useful information. And I agree with those reviews that note the "yuppy" element.

We run a small simple living group in the Sierras, that is like the ones we ran in Alameda and San Joaquin counties here in California. So we are not new to the live simply and get out of debt ideas. And I note that there is a big difference between spoiled brats needing to learn what is really important in life and those who know what is important in life and want to know even more about how to simplify their lives.

The Intenet be it google searches or Yahoo groups has a whole lot more free information that is useful than this book. Amazon[.com]offers a whole lot more books on the subject that I would recommend.

Not as good as Your Money or Your Life, but still good
After reading Your Money or Your Life by the late Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin, Getting a Life: Strategies for Simple Living Based on the Revolutionary Program for Financial Freedom Your Money or Your Life seemed to be a natural progression.

This book *does* offer some very helpful examples of individuals who used the advice in Your Money or Your Life. However, after reading the original book, I was somewhat disappointed by these authors' inconsistent choices in areas of voluntary simplicity. For example, they talk about how they cut their food bill down to just ($) a month for two people, and I know many couples who are into voluntary simplicity who can easily spend much less than that in a month. They also mention that they kept Call Waiting because they only have one phone line, which made me think, What did people do in the past with only one phone line when people were trying to call them? It just seemed inconsistent with some of the other advice they give in the book. Another annoyance was their example of a family who decided to go without health insurance, and just put money away in savings every month in the event of health expenses down the road. This would seem to me false economy. What would happen to this family if after saving a few thousand dollars they were hit with a serious accident or illness? Such an event could easily wipe out all of their savings.

In spite of the inconsistencies, this book does offer some good advice as well as list plenty of helpful resources for anyone interested in voluntary simplicity. The epilogue does a follow-up of the individuals listed throughout the book and tells you where they're at now in their lives. The epilogue is followed by a section of resources listing foundations, books, newsletters, organizations and other helpful resources for those interested in voluntary simplicity and financial independence.

Life in a Medieval Village
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Joseph Gies and Francine Gies
Amazon base price: $22.75
Average review score:

A Profusion of Details: Lacking Significance
This book is so densely packed with miniscule details and examples that the information's significance becomes blurred, if not obsolete. The authors show they are very knowledgable on the subject, but they fail to analyze the information they present. The reader is left to interpret the meaning of details and ponder why they are included. The authors also use repetitive examples that become tiring and ineffective. The only minutely important information is presented in the topic sentences of each paragraph, and the book can be reasonably well understood just by reading the introductory sentences. While this book could be a treasure house for someone researching the relationship between manors and their respective villages, the average reader's attention is never captured. Students, beware! Before embarking on an excruciatingly dull explaination of medieval village life, reconsider your other options of reading material. (One option is another book by these authors that has gotten better reveiws.)

Lifeless
On the positive side, this book contains an enormous quantity of well-documented detail and scholarship. On the negative side, the writing is colorless and, to my eye, devoid of any unifying theme. Even someone seriously interested in the history of the period will find it soporific. Having struggled to the end, I still cannot decide if the juice was worth the squeeze.

An Interesting Flavor of Life in the Middle Ages
The Gies have made a career out of filling a niche in the medieval history market. Life in a Medieval Village gives a very detailed view of everyday medieval life to the casual reader. As a result, they walk a fine line. Some casual readers may find the text to be dry, and to lend too much detail to seemingly trivial matters, while specialist historians may find the work too general and superficial (not scholarly).

I find their work to be engaging, and to provide a fairly good picture of the subject matter. In terms of medieval studies, it's useful to provide a general knowledge base prior to more detailed analysis.

I recommend this book as well as their other works.
