A great, entertaining, well-written historical fiction
Julian Rathbone, the author, has done a remarkable job of telling the fictionalized account of the life of an engaging, adventurous man of the Napoleonic era. Joseph, as a character, is so interesting and well developed that you feel you know him very well. Other characters are similarly developed and portrayed. Furthermore, the plot is fascinating and well-paced, taking the reader across the map of Europe, through villages, battlegrounds, etc. Mr. Rathbone clearly researched his subject well, as he has a clear command of the era in his descriptions of the life of the times. As a reader, you become completely immersed in the story and learn much about this important time in European history. The book was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and it is easy to see why it was. I have also read Mr. Rathbone's book, The Last English King, which is equally, if not perhaps, more wonderful. Fans of well-written, literary historical fiction will be richly rewarded from reading these books of Mr. Rathbone.

It's fun even if you don't know the music.
The Quentin Blake illustrations are cool. The lyrics are very readable. (Quentin Blake illustrated many Roald Dahl books) A 4 year old friend of mine loves this book and sings along with it.

Joseph Balsamo
This is a must for Dumas fans. Joseph Balsamo is the first book in a series that capture the history of the French revolution in a novel that is truly of epic proportins.
Love, war, fantasy and politics are delicately woven into the fabric of the story. Highly recommended.

Excellent collection of original documents on Beuys
Joseph Beuys is a mythical figure in the art world; however, this books shows the real intetions of his art work and social sculpture. An excellent resource, a must read for anyone interested in challenging the fabric of society.

Get this if you are at all interested in Joseph Beuys
If you know anything abouy Beuys, this book will be so interesting to you! As the title says, these are his early drawings, they are great to see in comparison to his later sculture etc. It's is mostly a collection of works, but the tiny book also has information about the artist and by the artist! This is a great reference material on Beuys, and it's pretty inexpensive!

A great book for all, academic and passing interest
This is an excellent book out of the 12 I've consulted for my final year dissertation, when I ordered if from Amazon I was torn between this one and the Adriana "felt hat: A life told" but the costumer reviews put me off. Having read Adrianas "JB the art of cooking" from the library, buying this book from editor Gene Ray was certainly the best way to go. The book is similar to, but more accessible than, the Critique of Beuys from the tate series. It contains however, the vital "Twilight of the Idols" by benjamin Buchloh which, if nothing else reveals some of the misconceptions and horrors that beuys provoked...but it offers another article by Buchloh, written 20 years later that acts almost as a retraction. the presentation and the much needed balance of argument makes this book an absolute must for anyone, from any level of understanding to purchase. A great, essential read on Joseph Beuys.

Joseph Campbell an Introduction

Segal points out some significant disparity
The author has written an excellent overview. While he recognizes the romantic appeal of Campbell's work, he remains solicitous with his breakdown of the recurring themes, such as the collapse of Eastern into Western culture and the supposed Matriarchal culture and philosopy that underlies all "higher" forms of religion. This is not to say that he disproves Campbell's ideas as a mystic per se, since such ideas are subjective.

Wonderful
Listening to these tapes has rekindled my passion for writing and storytelling. In these tapes Joseph Campbell tells the detailed story of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. He includes fascinating details and versions of the stories that I never knew existed. He also shows how the history of England impacted the different versions of the King Arthur legend. For me, the stories and information on these tapes is more delicious than ice cream and cake.
