Human Rights and Social Policy in the 21st Century

Thought-Provoking Book
What is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? What is its history? And to what extent is the U.S. in violation or compliance with this document of international law? In his well researched book,Human Rights and Social Policy in the 21st Century, Joseph Wronka addresses these issues in layperson's language yet with a breadth that crosses space and time. The major argument that human rights includes social and economic as well as legal rights is compelling. This book should be read by lawyers, political scientists, educators, and citizens wanting to put human rights into some kind of perspective.

Humbert, a French general in rebel Ireland, 1798

Author: John Cooney

Average review score:

A readable little book
This book, as it's title implies focuses on Humbert's short foray into Ireland. However this was only one of the many adventures that he crammed into a short life. A few extra pages to complete the story of this remarkable charachter would not have gone amiss. Anyone who can manage to win the heart of the Emperor's sister (for a while anyway), escape drowning in a shipwreck, befriend the Lafitte brothers, (pirates by trade), Marie the Sainted (a voodoo priestess), fight in the Vendee, Ireland, across central Eurpoe, Santo Dominica, New Orleans and attempt to lead an invasionary force to Mexico surely deserves a biography of more than 34 pages. The only thing that did annoy me about this book was Cooney's tendency to link the events of 1798 to the modern Irish Peace process and sugest that this is just exactly the way that long dead old warhorse Jean Joseph Humbert would have wanted it. Maybe he would have approved, maybe he wouldn't; probably he would just have eyed up a pretty girl and asked for another whiskey.

A down to earth book of essential hydrology for applications
This book is an essential read for civil/water/hydraulic/water resources/environmental engineers who need a bit more hydrology necessary for understanding the hydrology applied in their disciplines.

The book defines hydrology and proceeds to indicate the essential difference between applied hydrology and just scientific hydrology. Beginning with the traditional presentation of the hydrologic cycle, all the components of the cycle are dealt with in more detail in the subsequent chapters of the book to indicate the applications involving each and appropriate examples given.

Non-verbose explanations with adequate real examples are used in presentations of meteorology/solar radiation, rainfall/snowmelt, evaporation, infiltration, streamflow and hydrographs/unit hydrographs, groundwater occurrence and hydraulics, probability distributions/extreme value analysis/design floods/storms, river morhology, sedimentation, computer modelling, flood routing by hydrologic and hydraulic methods, and introduction to applications. These are by no means all the main contents - but just indicative of the variety of included essential topics.

It may be old (my edition of 1988) but still contains all the hydrology an engineer may ever need.

I Don't Know How To Pray But God Does

Understanding prayer has never been this easy!
Never in America's History has there been such an interest in spiritual matters, especially prayer. There seems to be an erroneous belief that God is a giant Santa Clause to which we go to get our wish list fulfilled. The result has been that most of our prayers go unanswered. We find today many people offering various methods and techniques which promise us the secret to getting what we want through prayer. Having tried many of these methods I have found them to be woefully lacking in "fruit". Then I found Rev. Joseph Wolpert's book, "I Don't Know How to Pray But God Does". Finally someone has gotten it right. Rev. Wolpert reminds us that our purpose and reason to pray is not to "get" something from God, but to "get God". When we seek God and not "things from God", our prayer life suddenly becomes effective, fulfilling and powerful. Rev. Wolpert very skillfully guides us through the maze of our previous misconceptions of what prayer is or ought to be, and brings us back to what prayer was meant to be. The way to establishing a personal relationship with our heavenly Father who loves us more than we can imagine and want's to pour out His Blessings on us. There is a saying that "Prayer changes things". After you read Rev. Wolpert's loving and insightful little book, "I Don't Know How to Pray But God Does", you will realize the truth of that statement. I know it will be a blessing to you as it has been for me.

The idea of a town : the anthropology of urban form in Rome, Italy and the ancient world
Published in Unknown Binding by Faber and Faber ()
Author: Joseph Rykwert
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $17.25
Average review score:

Not optional reading
This is a book more for architects than it is for classicists although it will enrich anyone who reads it. Rykwert is a scholar of the first rank, and it is the mark of a superior scholar to write in such a way as to cull the most arcane information from another field and trim, dry, boil, knead and package it for easy swallowing without sacrificing any of the wisdon-enhancing ingredients. Other books dealing with the same theme have preceded Rykwert's own book. F.W Jackson Knight's and Fustel de Coulanges' are exemplary for their intensity of imagination and obliquity of perspective. And like its predecessors, Rykwert's book takes you on a brief, but a grand tour of the ancient world. That is to say, it shows you just what was so grand about the ancient world and the ancient mind's response to the cosmos in its orientation with regard to "worlding". The book deals with the ancient practice, especially Roman, of founding a city. Rykwert shows you in plain language the profundity and density of religious and mythopoetic factors that used to go into the act of founding a city. But, this book is not about something that once was. It is about that which always IS in Architecture. The Roman poet Sallust said of myths, "these things never happened, but are always." This is what Rykwert gets at in describing the actual mechanisms and the machines that appear as gods, herms, gates, etc, in ancient Mediterranean constructions of the world. World: Mundus, in Latin. The chthonic gateway to the underworld, the big gaping vaginal hole in the middle of the site where the town is to be erected. The final chapter discusses the symbolic parallels found in other traditions.
This book is not optional reading for those who would pretend to practice architecture, or for those who want to understand the origin/destiny of the relationship between "art" and "religion", between the Apollonian and the Dionysian in Western culture. I recommend Camille Paglia's for a richer and wider and literary understanding of the implication of Rykwert's thesis as it applies to the whole cultural trajectory of the Occident's history. By the way, the sales rank of this book, and that after 25 years, no architect (practitioner, student, consumer) has bothered to write a review of this indispensible work only further fan my misgivings concerning the two thing I know about my own profession: intellectual vapidity of the license wielding practitioners and the miasmic cabalism of the academics.

Practical, easily understood examples of the value of math
Modern electronic commerce requires the secure, error-free collection and transmission of data. Basic number theory provides the tools needed to perform these operations and this book is an excellent introduction to the theory behind it all. The teaching of mathematics generally suffers from a chronic affliction. Where the examples are easily understandable they are not practical or useful and where they are practical and useful they are not easily understandable. That is not the case with the demonstrations in this book.
We all have encountered the ISBN numbers of books, the Universal Product Code (UPC) on products and most of us own charge cards. The simple, yet effective ways in which number theory is used to verify the correctness of these numbers is one of the most demonstrable uses of mathematics that exists in the world today. Furthermore, the level of mathematics is well within the reach of an advanced high school or first year college student. The most advanced topic in the book is the most basic of group theoretic concepts.
The book is structured so that it could be used as a textbook, and there are three classes of problems at the end of each chapter. A first set of basic exercises that reinforce the discussion of the chapter, paper assignments, where topics for potential short papers are given and finally activities that can be done in a group. The exercises are well-done and test the reader’s understanding of the material of the chapter.
This is a superb book on many levels. The best aspect is that it shows how mathematics is used in practical applications, where the background is simple enough for almost anyone to follow. Truly one of the best demonstrations of the utility of mathematics that exists today.
