Good treatment of preventive maintenance management concepts
This makes a good text for introducing broad maintenance management concepts to students who have never been exposed to formal instruction in the topic. Understandable, without being trivial

The Proust Screenplay: a la Recherche du Temps Perdu
Published in Paperback by Grove Press (July, 2000)
Authors: Harold Pinter, Joseph Losey, and Barbara Bray
Amazon base price: $14.00
Average review score:

Too bad this was never made into a movie.
A screenplay of Proust's In Search of Lost Time sounds like a hopeless project. In the most recent translation, Proust's novel ran to over 4,000 pages. Reducing this to a screenplay would seem to require cuts of such magnitude that nothing of the novel would be left. Indeed, those movies that have been made of the novel usually are of a small part, like the Swann in Love section of Swann's Way. Pinter, however, managed to pull off the impossible. He concentrated on key events in the novel, and even more on key images. It is hard to say whether this would have worked with someone totally unfamilar with the material. However, presenting Proust's novel in any literal fashion would be impossible, and probably contrary to what he attempted to accomplish in his novel. Pinter's screenplay, for anyone who has read the novel, is a tremendous success. Unfortunately, it was never made into a movie.

Proximity, Levinas, Blanchot, Bataille, and Communication
Published in Hardcover by Martinus Nijhoff (September, 1982)
Author: Joseph Libertson
Amazon base price: $141.50

Prior Knowledge Essential for Comprehension of this book
For over ten years I had been reading this book--attempting to grasp the vocabulary which is sometimes in French, (with no page of definitions) and sometimes in English. One's task is to first keep track of ideas presented in the first chapter, then with your deep and profound pre-knowledge of Levinas, Blanchot, and Bataille, you can try to ferret out what is the strange, echoing discussion all three of them had amongst and between their works. The premise is that they DID read each other and responded in their own works to each other, but only Libertson gained some intuition of what these correlations might be. An excellent effort, hard to understand, must love exotic French theory and Martinus Nijhoff books. European all the way.

Psychiatry/Neurology: Pretest Self-Assessment and Review

Half of this book is just right for you...
I am in the process of studying for Part I of the Psychiatry Boards and bought this book. I was particularly interested in boning up on Neurology, and turned to the Neurology portion in the front of the book. I then became terrified at my lack of knowledge, wondering how I could ever be expected to know this stuff. Turns out that half of this book (the first half, in this case) is intended for neurologists studying for their Boards, and includes an appropriately measured section on Psychiatry; the second half is for psychiatrists, and has a similarly basic section on Neurology. Having recovered from my near CVA, I have found the Neurology (for psychiatrists) questions to be reassuringly accessible to my knowledge base, but I could have done with a few more questions of this sort. Neurologists will presumably feel the same about their section. I am not quite sure of the logic of making one book for the two different populations, other than justifying the printing run. However, all of the questions in the portion of the book for psychiatrists have been appropriately challenging, the answers are appropriately explanatory, and overall the book has been very helpful in assessing my own areas of strength and weakness. Just expect to buy half a book that you won't use, unless you are double-boarding, or want to be humbled by how much you don't know about another doctor's specialty.

Psych info made easy.
This book was a good introducion to the field of psychology. It was a great help to me during my general psychology course. Aside from presenting its information in a clear and easly understandable way, the text is well organized and full of study aids. The chapters are helpfully subdivided and each segment provides a synopsis and a "study break" self quiz so you can test yourself and see how much of the material you have asimilated. Margin definitions and summeries of all the important terms and concepts are presented adjacent to the full explanations of the material. The graphs and illustrations in each chapter are very informative and useful in explaining the concepts and experiments presented. Overall this is a good book for anyone who wants a genral overview of psychology.

The Psychology of Blacks: An African Centered Perspective (3rd Edition)

A road less traveled
This book sets about on the journey to link the African American life to the culture, values, and spiritual roots of Africa. The authors call this an Afrocentric perspective in viewing African American life. This book differienciates between viewing the world from a Eurocentric view as opposed to viewing the world from an African perspective. It necessarily does not glorify Afrocentricism, but states that this concept is important for African Americans to understand the origins of their identity and value systems. The book goes into detail about the orgins of biological, religious and philisophical theories that define and justify racial inferiority. It develops in detail about African American identity, stressing the fact that culturally different does not mean deficient. The authors detail in defined chapters, what consistant and inconsistant behavior is putting African Americans at risk for future generations. It is thought provoking reading to gain perspective about African American behavior from African traditions and ancestry.
