The Private Thoughts of One of Hitler's Most Trusted!
In 'The Goebbles Diaries, 1942-43,' we are given a glimpse into the mind of Nazi Germany's genius of propaganda and one of Hitler's most trusted lieutenants. These diaries shed light on the Nazis view of Churchill, Stalin and all the other central figures of the era. Goebbels also tells us of the anger he and other leading Nazis felt over the defection of Italy to the allied camp, dealing with the devastating allied air raids, and the fear and anxiety over the revearses on the Eastern front. Unfortunatley, these pages don't give us as clear a view of Hitler as one would hope and passages dealing with the Holocaust are few and far between. In all, Goebbels presents himself as a champion of National Socialist ideals who is loved by Germany and respected by his enemies. What one really sees is the almost ridiculous opptimism that Goebbels held through these years of struggle. It is surprising just how firm was Goebbel's conviction that victory was certain. Those interested in the Third Reich should read Goebbel's diaries as it is a rare look into this troubled time written by one of it's greatest criminals.

Private thinkings of propaganda inventor
Dr. Joseph Goebbels was one of the most influentual and feared persons in the Third Reich. With strong influence on Hitler he managed to control virtually every important activity in the Reich. His diary undoubtably shows an extremely unscrupulous man, prepared to risk anything to achieve his beliefs (the tributes that are usually linked to Machiavelli could find even more proper place here). But he has done his homework well. He brilliantly understood the meaning of propaganda and its real influence on masses and he devised the methods to use it to all extent. We can read from his point of view how he was sailing in the dangerous seas of internal and international affairs and though his style of writing and thinking are not very nice due to his immense mental brutallity, we must admit that he was very succesful at what he was doing. Pure efficiency. It is very nice to learn something about a man who wrote history not so far ago, although it could be deadly for many among us. The understanding of his thought and point of view allows us to see the WWII in somehow another perspective. It must prepare us for actions to prevent such events from happening in the future.

Essential reading for understanding what went on in Germany
I have to say that this isn't a 5-star work because of the writing, the criterion I normally use when dishing out parts of galaxies. It's because I think the book should be read by anyone wanting to gain a glimmer of understanding into what became one of the most powerfully focused minds in the last century. Regardless of the pros and cons of Goebells being allowed to retain even honorary posthumous citizenship of an Earth he seemed bent on destroying, it is enlightening to read the words he set down. Obviously they were never intended to be seen by the likes of you or me, let alone those in power, who later had a chance to peruse them at their leisure. If only the good (sic) doctor had known.

Anyway, following this gentleman of uncertain disposition down the path to what must have been close to madness (he must have had to stave madness off quite madly) and what was, an untimely death (in more ways than one), is an exercise that all students of human nature will finally be glad they chose to do. After all, he was only a man, like you and me, and I think that comes through quite plainly in his own words.

Terrific Book
If you want a good book to read this pick this one up, you won't be dissapointed.

Illuminating Wisdom for the 3rd Millenium
The truth, grace and wisdom of Mary Magdelene teachings are now brought forth in this historical, transcendental and empowering book. It may very well shift the Occidental fabric of this world. The feminine compliment is here. If you can, read this book in conjunction with the New Testament, Torrah, and/or Koran.

Splendid and Thought-Provoking
At last a Gnostic Gospel is presented in a way that even non-Gnostics can love. Leloup's excellent commentary adequately summarizes the Gnostic world-view without being intrusive, and the light he shines on the Gospel of Magdalene will make you ponder no matter what you believe, even if you believe nothing. It is short enough to read quickly -- but you probably won't. It's too good. Savor its wisdom and go back to it often. It's a spiritual experience par excellance and a bargain to boot.

The latest in a wonderful series of Dark Tales
Yet again, I have been enthralled, scared and drawn in by Mr. Citro's tales about my home state. He even covered my home-town ghost in this installment, which thrilled me to no end. He is truly one of our master storytellers, and I highly recommend all of his work.

Vermont's best story teller does it again
Joseph Citro's collections of Vermont folklore have become as much a part of the Green Mountain State as sugaring and the Lake Champlain Monster. GREEN MOUNTAINS, DARK TALES continues this series of terrificly readable and enjoyable stories based on Vermont folklore and legend. Anyone who likes the state or just likes a good story would do well to pick up this book. It makes for addictive reading.

For anyone who loves a good story
In the tradition of old-time Yankee yarn-spinners, Citro delivers something that's all too rare nowadays--a darn good story. Dozens of them, in fact. I got so wrapped up in the tale called "The House of the Feasting Dead" that I nearly went past my subway stop. This is a hair-raising tour "dark" side of Vermont, a place populated by ghosts, mystics, spiritualists and even a "stone-throwing devil."

Education From The 60s Still Lasts
Education program from the 60s still lasts From the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet 28 September 1999

In 1965, with anti-Vietnam demonstrations at their worst, philosophy professor Joseph Tussman began The Experimental College Program at the University of California, Berkeley. His goal, education for the sake of the individual and of society, sounds like a dream for the jaded higher education of today. In Habits of Mind: the Experimental College Program at Berkeley, Katherine Bernhardi Trow evaluates the program and its long- term effects. While evaluation of education generally focuses narrowly on the short-sighted and fashionable, this book's great merit is its description of the long term effects. Tussman College lasted four years, from 1965-1969. Some 300 students were chosen at random to participate. Trow interviewed forty students who completed the program, and she paints a vivid picture of how they were affected, what they learned and what positive influence it had in their lives. Tussman maintained that it was the university's fundamental duty to reawaken interest and get students involved for the sake of principles which are fundamental for individuals and for society: to develop an exercise of power built on rational, democratic and constitutional principles; to increase sensitivity to humanitarian values and fundamental human problems; to cultivate and strengthen ways of life and ways of conduct which make it possible for humanity to continue a war with institutions and with a spirit of rational discussion to find solutions to problems. Democracy demands of its citizens a political interest and active participation. To do this, according to Tussman, one must educate oneself in a fashion which before the breakthrough of democracy was reserved for members of the ruling class. Students probed deeply into fundamental problems. They examined the interplay between freedom and power. They were taught to be responsible citizens in a democratic society and custodians of western civilization. The program consisted of two parts: a syllabus and a pedagogical method. The syllabus focused on big problems and cultural crisis periods in history which had driven great thinkers to tackle fundamental questions. The reading list consisted of classics, such as the Iliad and works by Plato, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Mill, and Marx, along with more current books, such as The Autobiography of Malcolm X. These were books by authors now viewed as "dead, white males." But students remember the reading as fantastic. Pedagogically, the program diverged radically from then-prevalent teaching methods. Teachers were recruited from various areas of study. All the reading material was read by both students and teacher, regardless of which subject the teacher normally taught. Lectures were held twice a week with all the students and teachers present, and smaller seminars were held. The students wrote essays every other week, and every day they jotted down thoughts and reflections prompted by books, lectures, seminars and discussions. These notes became an intellectual autobiography. The activities reinforced each other and formed a tight intellectual tapestry which stimulated and strengthened learning and education. It was, in short, a program which moved against the stream of mass education. The program seems even more radical if one considers that it, with its high standards, was established when the general trend was toward a relaxation of the demands on students and when Berkeley, like many American universities, was in a permanent state of uproar. What were the long-term effects? In the evaluation, the dense essay- writing comes out as highly valued and as a central force in the program-- at once challenging and entertaining. Essay assignments taught the students to think more analytically and abstractly. The students' linguistic ability was radically improved, in speech and in writing and as much in style as in grammar. The intense contact with the teacher, and the criticism the teacher provided in tutorials, played a constructive and crucial role. The lack of grades was positive. Instead of focusing on grades, one concentrated on the ideas and the knowledge for itself; competitive thinking was conspicuous in its absence. The important thing was to understand what one read and to be able to apply it in other contexts than the immediate one. It was not regarded as meritorious to memorize details in order to regurgitate them later. Tussman encouraged individual thought. The environment--a separate house and small groups --contributed to the feeling of a learned society and stimulated the students. The program helped students to grow intellectually and morally. Their ability to analyze, to adapt themselves quickly to new things, new environments and new problems and to view these from different perspectives grew. They acquired a better understanding of the world around them and a better ability to interpret and understand events in it. Empathy increased and led to intellectual satisfaction and a more content life, which is reflected in the professions in which the program's former students are now active: physician, journalist, attorney, civil engineer, etc. Why did the program cease if it was so good? The answer is brief: university bureacratic staffing problems and a certain amount of lack of interest in basic education at research-oriented Berkeley made the dedicated Tussman tire. The market has become an ideology instead of a means--even, with some exceptions, in academia. Students do not study to grow as a human being, but to satisfy the market. Within the not too distant future, perhaps we will hear a university or college president who, in a travesty of Kennedy's inauguration speech, will welcome novices with the admonishment: "Ask not what the market can do for you, but what you can do for the market." Doris Lessing calls the product of this competence-fixation the well-educated barbarians; those who have gone to school for twenty years, have brilliant records, but never read a book, know no history, and care only about knowledge in their field. That group does not include the graduates of Tussman College.

Very Important!
An important study of the impact of an intense collegiate experience on students.

Exceptionally Rich!
An exceptionally rich and multifaceted account of an experiment which occupies an interesting and important place in the history of American higher education.

From a Medical Student
There is great, easy to access information in this pocketbook not only on the subject of Gyn Onc, but also on the medical management of patients, which is so important in the practice of Gyn. Oncology. The medical management section is broken down by systems (e.g., neuro, pulmonary, etc.).

Handbook of Gyn Oncology is a beneficial pocketbook not only for students/residents on a Gyn Onc rotation, but also for students and residents on other medical or surgical rotations (I've used it both on Dr. Santoso's rotation and in other months). Whether you need to know what the risks for HIV or hepatitis transmission during hemotransfusion or how/when to dose heparin or fresh frozen plasma, it's in this book. This pocketbook also contains descriptions of commonly performed surgical procedures in gynecologic oncology, as well as sections on chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Dr. Santoso is considered one of the finest clinical educators at The University of Tennessee, and his book is concise, thorough, and highly recommended.

Resident's perspective
This handbook is concise, yet packed with the kind of information you need at the bedside, on rounds, or in preparation for the OR. Several of the sections have clear tables which make quick reference possible. And the procedures section provide clear step by step instructions for most all cases.

editorial review
I wrote this handbook to be as a practical guide for residents/fellows/ students and other clinicians in taking care gyn onc patients. Gyn onc patients are unique in the sense that they are surgical patients but usually with many medical problems (HTN, DM, COPD,etc). Thus, this handbook was written more like a combination of the surgery handbook + the Washington manual. my residents and fellows at UT Southwestern/Parkland and UTMB especially found the complication management section to be helpful in taking care their sick patients in the middle of the night. The chemo section is as update it as the GOG manual. I kept the book small enough to be pocket size, thus, easier to carry around.

This books is written for clinicians like you. thus, any feedback from you will be appreciated and incorporated to the next edition. thanks...

Love This Cookbook!
I originally borrowed this cookbook from the library, but we used it so much, I just had to own it! Lots of great recipes that are low fat w/o sacrificing flavor. I have many cookbooks, but I keep coming back to this one for everyday meals! Highly recommed this cookbook--we love it!

Excellent lowfat cookbook
The recipe's in this cookbook are easy to follow and taste great. They are geared up to cook at the firehouse, as most of the recipes are for either 4 or 8 people. Some up to 12. Great cookbook:-)

This is the best cookbook I've ever bought!
Most healthy cookbooks have recipes that are just too fussy for everyday cooking. This book has recipes that are not only easy to make, but are also delicious. Even my husband, who is usually very suspicious of anything labeled "healthy", loves the recipes from this book. I use this cookbook more than any other on my shelf.

easy to understand, written in plain english.
Dont let the title scare you, this is an incredibly awesome book. It deals with symptoms, treatments, gives other links. It is very informative, and written in plain english. I would suggest it for reading to anyone just diagnosed with hepatitis c. It is also great to let family members and friends read it, so they can understand the disease, and the changes you will go through.

Great explanations for those newly diagnosed
A thorough book with technical medical information presented in a way that is understandable by almost everyone, yet I suspect is still a good book for doctors whose speciality does not include the liver.Explanations of treatments currently available, herbs and what to expect as a Hep C patient. An easy read. I read it in an evening. And a great reference book.

A must read for those infected with Hepatitis C.
Carol Turkington takes the mystery out of what you can expect upon a diagnosis of Hepatitis C. It is written very clearly and in layman's language for the patient. Very up to date. All you need to know, including a listing of organizations to keep you in the know. It could have been called "A Patient's Handbook on Hepatitis C". Hopefully it will be translated for distribution worldwide.

Jersey City's own Holden Caufield
Joey Scadutto, the fifteen-year old narrator of High Gate Health and Beauty, is, like Holden Caufield, a truth teller. But where Joey comes from, a small corner of Jersey City that is half urban and half Eden, truth telling makes life a struggle and early death a real possibility. I couldn't stop reading this sad and beautiful story even after I learned who the killer is. For me the real question became where his penchant for truth would take Joey. With pitch perfect dialogue and vivid descriptive details, Colicchio leads the reader to a gut wrenching and unexpected conclusion.

good book
This is a good book. If it wasnt a good book I woudnt say its a good book but it is a good book so all I have to say is that this book is good.

This is not a review
I will just like to say this to the author of this book. I know your son. He goes to school with me, and he is in my spanish, literature, and gym class. Thank you for your time and appreciation.

A GR8 Book on Recruitment & Selection
A very comprehensive book on recruitment and selection. I found it especially useful on its coverage of interviewing and tests. Its coverage of structured and unstructured interviews as well as the five factors approach to personality tests is fairly extensive and substantiated with rationale. Very logically written and well sign-posted with appropriate sub-headings; it is very easy to follow the logic as well as easy to search any particular aspect of recruitment you need to check. Even the experienced recruiter will find it useful to refresh his or her skills. The authors have removed the mystery and ambiguity often associated with successful recruitment. Anybody who is in the hiring business should get a copy and read it.

This is the hiring book to use
At last, I found a book about hiring that treats me like I can think. This book is readable and has a lot of depth. The authors get you to think through where you are trying to go with your business as the first part of hiring. I got a lot out of that focus. Then they have solid information about what tools to use for good hiring. High-Impact Hiring shows you how to structure an interview, but also how to use other tools like tests and reference checks. They show you how to design your own performance tests. Their decision-making tools are cool--there's a decision table that helps you make sure you don't hire a disaster and sorts out all the information you've got. If you just want an interviewing book, you could get one of the other "hiring" books--though High-Impact Hiring's treatment of interviewing was the best I've read. This book that gives you a system, gives you knowledge and tools, and treats you with respect.

great roadmap to follow for the hiring process
I used this book to design our company's hiring process, and found it helpful for all stages from job descriptions, interviewing, applications to offer letters. The quality of our hiring has improved significantly; all of the people we have hired since are still making major contributions to the company.
