Farmer ain't naked
Philip Jose Farmer makes an excelent job as always. Farmer known primarily for his Science Fiction, but has produced two Fantasy series World of Tiers and Riverworld, the latter an afterlife fantasy in the tradition of John Kendrick Bangs. Farmer words flow as easy as ever and this novel is a work of art. It aint as sexy or shocking as 'An exorcism: ritual one/two' or as deeply involving as 'The river world saga', but he builds his story up as the SF/horror/fantasy master he is. God fun, and with a nice climax as always.

Narrating Postmodern Time and Space

How to Read in a Postmodern Culture
Joseph Francese has written an excellent book on the differences of representation and intervention. He shows how metafictionists like Calvino and Barth try to represent the world in its totality at a time in history (Post WWII) when racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual differences were exploding into the public consciousness. Calvino, especially, struggled bravely, but Francese sees in his project a totalizing attempt at universality which cannot recognize the power of difference. Against this strategy, Francese positions Toni Morrison, E. L. Doctorow, and Tabbuchi, who disperse authorial power in their narratives and do not attempt to represent the world in any grand, overarching scheme. The section on Morrison's novel BELOVED is particularly impressive and shows how incredibly talented and philosophically informed she is. The use of the choral narrator, and aural gaps, allow the readers to participate in the telling of the tale. Additionally, Morrison intervenes in history by telling a story that has been "written out" of history, and in doing so, her readers are able to make connections between the past and present. This may sound heady but Francese is extremely clear. My only criticism is that Doctorow's book THE WATERWORKS doesn't really illustrate the point he is trying to make.

Native animal stories
This could have been a much longer book, since there is an almost endless number of Native American stories dealing with animals. Bruchac made a good selection, though, and the stories of a wide variety of North American native peoples are represented here. All of them show the importance of animals to the Native Americans in that they are central to creation myths, as well as tales of friendship and those providing numerous survival instructions. Bruchac kept the prose simple, making this book ideal for children. Also useful is the glossary at the end, and the descriptions of tribal nations which provide a great deal of useful information on the major North American peoples.

A Good Book To Have around The House
Joseph Bruchac's book, Native Wisdom, has helped me when ever I had questions. In all it is a handbook for life. In the eight chapters of the book small paragraphs of speech and short poems tell about things like creations and the good things in life. The Native American poetry is beautiful. The pieces are almost all from different tribes and tribe chiefs, so it shows wisdom differs among people. I think that you will really enjoy this book.

"Navy Diver" will make a lasting impression....
It's been a while since I read this book, but remember details as if was yesterday. It didn't inspire me to be a hardhat diver, cutting away anti-submarine nets in the Golden Gate, spending hours in a de-compression chamber, or talking like Donald Duck in a heliox atmosphere, but the events related by Joe Karneke stimulated me to learn more about them in the years to come. I read this book around 35 years ago, providing a young teenager a view on a world under the sea that was real, immediate, and interactive with man the achiever. (I always thought it would have made a decent motion picture.)Buy it for the young and curious, and it may plant a seed of inspiration.

A bit dull but nonetheless very informative
There is a fashion among Nelson writers to pick a year or two in Nelson's life and then to write every known thing about him during that time. This is one of those books. Still, it reads well and contains a lot of information (even though it's detail-heavy). I recommend it, but not as strongly as the other new Nelson books out this year (Vincent, Hayward).

Very good, get it if you can find it
I don't program in Clipper any more, but the information in this book is valuable to programmers of other languages as well. If you are still writing DOS programs and need specialized support for Netware and NetBIOS networks, this book is a must.

James Webster, The New Grove Haydn
This is a concise, lucid, well written account of Haydn's life and career with a balanced assessment of his works and of his character. It contains a complete list of Haydn's works and a valuable bibliography for further reading and research. It is an excellent introduction to Haydn. Those wanting to learn more about Haydn's life and works will look elsewhere but will want this book for its listing of his works and its bibliography.

Informative
I have had fibromyalgia for 10 years -due to a car accident. This is the first book I have found to put me at ease whit it. I understand a bit more why I react to certain situations and why I feel the way I do. Basically I feel this is a primer on what is going on in your body. There are so many people who don't understand this problem. It is not a death sentence. This book helps you get on with your life.
