Yes, there were chapters in this book that I read with a somewhat dazed attention as they included far too many details about far too many people whom I had never heard of. But even in those chapters, Eleanor's light kept me reading.
Highly recommended for its revelation of an extremely important American woman.

Much use is made of borrowed terms, such as the Christian term 'progressive revelation' - but here the usage is turned about face. It is made to mean that all ways lead to God, and therefore all religious teachers are equally messengers from God. This results in 'Krishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Christ, Mohammed', and so on, all being cast in the same mould and tradition. But as their religious differences clearly outweigh their similarities (except in the respective moral codes perhaps), this requires at least some explanation, which is not forthcoming. There are also many adopted parallels to parts of the Islamic faith, such as the annual fast, equivalent to Ramadan.
The practical resolution of all this is found in the Baha'i message of 'consultation and universal participation', and 'service to mankind'. Many laudable humanistic, social progress statements are made. The aim is to appeal to all mankind in some way, to the widest possible audience of faith and non-faith, to work for earthly progress, peace and prosperity. The overall message is one of an "over-faith", aimed at syncretism and ecumenicism.

How rare it is to find a book that preserves the flavor of a language while laying it forth in an eminently practical manner; such is the present volume. New words, conjugations and formulae are introduced in the context of short readings and quotations, often humorous, from Voltaire, La Rochefoucauld and many others.
The authors have made ingenious use of cognates, words recognizable by their English counterparts, to tap an instant vocabulary. It's gratifying to discover how much French you already know as an English speaker. This approach gives you the opportunity to put that knowledge to work immediately, and to build upon it -- not without effort, but without the drudgery that you might expect from such rigorous fare. The preference for real French text (as opposed to textbook cookery -- "See Pierre run. Run, Pierre, run!") ensures that material is covered in a natural and useful order.
Although it provides simple guidelines for pronunciation, the book's focus is (as the title suggests) on the language as written. For conversational skills and comprehension of the spoken language, aspiring francophones should supplement this book with tapes and CDs (such as the "Living Language" series) and/or videos (e.g. "French in Action").

A calendar of blooming times and available colors begins each monthly chapter, and the author's suggestions are geared to Zone 6 American gardeners (he is a resident of Massachusetts). Gardeners in different zones will have to adjust accordingly.
There are over 400 color photographs, focused primarily on a particular species, rather than how that species appears in a landscape. In fact, if I were allowed to make a suggestion for the next edition of "Gardening with Perennials Month by Month" it would be to include information on which plants look and do well when grouped in close proximity.
Suggestion for other gardeners: use "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden" by Tracy Disabato-Aust in conjunction with "Gardening with Perennials Month by Month." Disabato-Aust is more informative about the impact of a particular perennial in the landscape as a whole. She also includes useful information on how to extend the blooming season (mainly by pruning).
Flowers are listed for each month from March through September. Conveniently, at the start of each chapter, there is a list of flowers by color. Plants are then listed alphabetically by scientific name.
For each plant there is information on its common name, flowering span, physical description, zone & culture. Other data may include native habitat, cultivation, bothersome diseases or pests & small color photos.
A great reference section in the back lists plants by characteristics, including those that bloom all season long, 6 weeks or more & in the winter. Fruit bearing, drought resistant, moisture loving & shade tolerant varieties are also listed.
