Rhetorical satire...
A very honest rhetorical satire on 'reality' . The author narrates the actuality of the country 'stalked' by homophobias. It leaves us thinking about how should we face up with such controversial issue; to feel for these individuals or to contiue with the discrimination that is presently destructing and murdering their spirituality. A good start-off for individuals who would like to expound on this issue.

An honestly told account
This was an excellent read. Well written with clearly organized ideas, this book tells us what life is like for a gay midshipman trying to live up to (and succeeding) proper military ideals. You get a feel for who the author was as a human being and how unfair it was for him to be dismissed according to a military policy based in fear. Gay men and women who are looking to serve our country in the military would do well to read this book.

Interesting And Informative
An account of a young Midshipman's experience at the Naval Academy, and ultimate litigation as a result of his dismissal three weeks prior to his graduation. This book is well written and one more in a growing list depicting the mindless discrimination policies against homosexuals in the militar y. Joseph Steffan, as a cadet, was exemplarary in all aspects. Ironically, his dismissal was a result of his adherence to the "honor code". He refused to deny his sexual orientation, even though his conduct was never in question. A truly sad commentary on the military today, but nevertheless, the reality.

Good reading
Not the BEST (ie 5 star) but it kept my um, 'attention' thru several readings.....

Definently a one-handed book....Enjoy!

Not the average gay male SM porn
If you find yourself turned-off by the average fare in gay male porn magazines this may be a pleasant surprise. Collected together are some of the stories Bean published as editor of various SM or leather magazines over the years. There are a total of 17 stories by 14 authors that cover a wide range of fetishes, relationship styles, and activities. Most go beyond the typical stereotypes associated with many SM interests. It is a hard-core collection so if you find yourself easily offended by language and descriptions of gay male sex, you may not want to buy this book.

Cream of the Crop Stories...
"Joseph Bean has edited hundreds of issues of magazines over the past ten years. He writes: "There have been about 350 pieces of erotic fiction used in about 120 issues of magazines for gay men--mostly leathermen or fetishists. This book is an attempt to keep some of those stories from slipping away... Horsemen includes the best leathersex stories I have edited for publication--the cream of a very bountiful crop of passionate writing about radical acts of sex, fetishism, erotic control and fantasy. Included are such superbly written stories as:

RECOLLECTIONS: YER IT: He would not get the man of his dreams. Instead, he'd get the man's friend...and ten times more leather action and raunchy intensity than he ever expected.

TELL HIM TO KISS ME: Here are two topmen who can't say "no" to the sassy, self absorbed bottom. "Do me now, do me this way," and the young man gets what he wants until he doesn't.

BOY MEETS BIKE: A young man, newly aware of his passion for motorcycles, awakens to the other powerful appetite that will shape his life: the men who ride the bikes.

OBSESSION: A heroic craving, a driving obsession overcomes the man. The one thing he may not have is the one thing he must have..." - abstract from Leyland Publications

A good book
I work as a business intermediary assisting clients in both selling and buying their business. I always recommend that first-time business buyers purchase and read this book.

Excellent Book For The Novice
I found Joseph's book to be highly readable and well organized. Clearly it is directed at the novice business buyer, and presents only the basic material to get the novice started. However, he touches on all the important points in a business acquisition and covers the material well. Although somewhat dated (Publ. 1994), especially regarding business legal forms, it still provides the foundation for more in-depth reading and research. For the first time business buyer, this is the first book to read.

Great reference for anyone looking to buy a business
The information in this book is worth reading by anyone searching for a business to buy. Though it could use an update (it was originally published in 1993), the insights of the authors are thought-provoking and well-reasoned. You will find lots of good food for thought, here.

It's got some weaknesses: tax info is outdated; a few topics seem irrelevant (like advice on buying a PC?!); and the templates for things like the Letter of Intent are bare-bones. But the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses. The commentary and wisdom of the authors (who have bought and sold companies) makes this book shine.

If you're pursuing an acquisition of less than $1 million, this book will be invaluable. For those pursuing larger acquisitions, you too will find the info helpful, but hiring professional help will be a must!

Lived through Hugo - Part 2
My husband and I lived through Hugo also. We stayed in our home, mainly because the news crews chose our little town, 15 miles from the coast, to hole up in. None of us realized the magnitude of this storm until it was too late. We were the lucky ones, we managed to get through that horrible night basically unscathed. Others were not so lucky. I like the focus of the book being on surviving the storm and helping your fellow man, of which we saw a lot of. People would drive by, giving out food and ice and clean water. It made me realize there is still good in the world after all. Of course, a year after the storm we hightailed it up to Canada! I swore never again to go through such an experience. At least up here all we have to deal with is lots of snow!

The Eye of The Storm
My wife of 6 months and myself left N.Y. to live in Charleston S.C on June 11th 1989. We never in our young lives ever wish to see a storm of such magnitude. It was a living nightmare , your book was excellent . This storm generated more tornadoes than any other, the air force had clocked speeds of 240mph sustained gust.God bless the ones who were not so fortunate as we were.It was hell for months afterwards. Your book was realistic

Lived thru Hugo
My husband and I visited the virgin islands in 1989. After arriving on Saturday morning, a very strong wind and rain storm arrived, called Hurricane Hugo. The trama followed with hollowing winds, trees falling, people scrambling, loss of communication, and lots of confusion. We will never forget this week long vacation at this beatiful island. Your book does not do the storm and damage to visitors, people who reside on the island, people who have businesses on the island, and of course, those who own boats and planes in this island.

Simple and Beautiful
This book is a beautiful and simple way to read about Jesus' life. Great for people who find it hard to follow the Bible and also for those who need a fresh look at the life of Jesus.

All of the Girzone books I have read are wonderful. So refreshing and uplifting. Also, easy to read and understand.

I highly recommend this book.

The Gospels Come Alive!
Having read all of Fr. Girzone's other books, I thirst for each of his new offerings. This book did not disappoint me. His ability to inject warmth and a personal perspective transform the Gospels from a more historical context to making the reader feel as though they were part of a beautiful story.

Anyone who has felt a bit arm's length when reading Scripture will find that they are welcomed into God's story as part of it. Fr. Girzone's writings continue to help bring my God closer to me.....and for that I thank him.....eternally.

Matt, Mark, Luke, John,& Joseph Girzone tell Jesus' Story
It is a wonderful read! The story of Jesus pooled together by Fr. Girzone and the Friends of Jesus, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. A smooth telling of the life of Jesus that allows one who is a "beginner" or "expert" of the Gospels to envision the life of Jesus through a flowing account.

Life Springing Forth.
This book should have been more appropriately titled HOW TO WATCH A SEED GROW. Instead of discussing the various stages of development and explaining what happens, the book is basically an extended science project explaining how students can watch a seed grow into a plant. The book talks about the different stages, but only discusses what the planted beans should look like in those stages, not really explaining what is happening or why. Nevertheless, the book does outline a good science project for younger children, but isn't much as a book to read to kids.

A Kids First Science Book
This is one very good science book. If you would like to do a seed project then this is a good guide to lots of young peoples questions about plants. It has colorful illustrations about what is happening with your project. It is written in detail, but not like a boring high school science textbook that goes on, and on, and on about one thing, giving every detail that there is. So what I'm trying to say is that this is a good book.

My five year old enjoyed this book
We enjoy the "Let's - Read - & - Find - Out" series of books. This one is a good addition, explaining seeds on my five year old son's level of understanding . Something that many adult writers of childrens' science books sometimes aren't very good at getting across. It is in my child's library at school.

The books in this series are informative and interesting for their target audiences. The illustrations are well done and add to understanding the process being described. They make it easier to follow for kids.

How to Use Your Healing Power

Understanding what the true healing is all about...
This is another Murphy classic. In this book he explains a reader how to understand all those miracles which are credited to Jesus in the New Testament. He brings in his spiritual understanding, by explaining those miracles in the light of spiritual psychology. Then he explains how to apply them into your everyday life. Dr. Murphy takes this all a step further and tells a reader how to master the art of healing. Not just your physical wounds, but also those inner problems that slow down your own progress toward success.

Dr. Murphy has written many great books, but this could be a bit better. This is certainly not the book to start with if you have not read other Murphy material. If you are new to Dr. Joseph Murphy, please read "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind" and "Telepsychics" first. Then proceed to this book and you will understand it better off.

Good luck.

ANOTHER MURPHY CLASSIC
In this book, Joseph Murphy explores the miraculous healings of Jesus as recorded in the new testament, and explains in simple terms how the same methods and principles can be applied by anyone to heal oneself or others. Originally published in 1957, it was way ahead of its time since the mind-body connection is only now starting to be taken seriously by mainstream medicine and the public at large. The author's metaphysical interpretation of scripture is certainly wholesome and uplifting, as opposed to those fundamentalist/literal interpretations that are so destructive. There are references to Thomas Troward (see his book "The Creative Process In The Individual" which I recommend). This is an excellent guide for all holistic healers. In addition, I want to recommend the author's "The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind," a true classic which also deals with healing and may be read in conjunction with this book.

A good book;looks simple but has deeper meaning.
This is a simple enough book. Examples are used from the bible parables but in a very revealing way that gives their metaphysical meaning. It is simple but healing at an intellectual level is a simple subject. Rearrange that deranged subconscious and healing automatically follows. The bug is in the how. Murphy has some simple things to say and explain but in that simplicity is clarity. This book made some things clear to me that others have tried to say but did not get the point across. That point being that the Perfect Spirit behind the mentality does the healing. Easy to say; but hard to get across as a conviction. Murphy is convincing and not to forget he was also a practitioner. In this field another one to read is Joel Goldsmith. A valuable read if you will read beyond the simplicity.

Hypnosis and Suggestion in the Treatment of Pain: A Clinical Guide

Useful, but read with caution
Overall there is some very useful information in here on the uses of hypnosis for pain control. It is written for clinicians, and so is free of some of the fluffier and more new age leanings of some other books on the subject. The potential buyer should be aware, however, that this is not a book with script ideas or lots of practical advice on how to phrase hypnotherapy sessions with pain patients. Rather, it provides an extensive overview of issues related to dealing with different kinds of pain patients and suggests how hypnosis is useful in these situations.

One aspect of the book that bothered me was that it seems suggest that pain without an obvious cause--which is often the case with chronic pain--is more likely to be psychosomatic in nature. In one passage it advises the hypnotherapist "to expect significant psychological factors in the maintenance of the patient's pain" if that patient "uses unusually colorful terms" to describe the pain, such as saying that it feels like "fish hooks" or "a red hot poker." One should be careful in making such sweeping generalizations. Intense burning sensations that patients might indeed describe as hot pokers that comes without an obvious physical cause, or that lasts long after an initial injury, is a classic description of reflexive sympathetic dystrophy pain. There are also many instances of inflammatory or nerve pain that is not easily diagnosed and that can feel like torture for the sufferer. It is extremely difficult, also, to describe different pain sensations. "Colorful language" or even odd descriptions that might not make a lot of anatomical sense is not necessarily a clue that the pain is largely psychological in nature. More recent developments in the study of chronic pain confirms this. I am both a trained hypnotherapist and a chronic pain patient for the past three years, so I speak with experience.

Beyond Pain
This book goes beyond simple suggestion for pain. It encompasses the psychology of pain, which includes somatic, neuropathic and procedural pain. This book is an absolute must for anyone interested in pain management.

Excellent. The definitive text.
As a lay person, I found that this book is not only a tool for clinicians, but also provides a valuable explanation of hypnosis for anyone with an interest in psychology. In his introductory chapter, Joseph Barber succinctly defines hypnosis and explains the phenomenon clearly and accurately. He makes the necessary distinctions to dispel myths about hypnosis and separate the hypnotic state from mere suggestion. Barber demonstrates a combination of sensitivity to human needs along with rigorous scientific grounding. It's fascinating reading, and one of the very few books that a novice would need to understand the true nature of hypnosis.

Introduction to Private Investigation: Essential Knowledge and Procedures for the Private Investigator

Review by ex Australian Police Officer
I am an experienced police investigator having worked for over 20 years in the field of surveillance and undercover tactics. The book covers basic principles in respect to these tactics but uses old methodology. The book makes reference to American legislation and therefore a lot of the book is irrelevant to Australian enforcement procedures. If you are just getting started in the industry the book would be helpful but I would look for an Australian alternative first.

Investigators
This is a very important book in my library, Thank you

Exceptional. Informative, interesting and very practical.
This book is essential reading for any person entering the Investigations field. The information provided is realistic, down to earth and absolutely tried and proven.

Many current Investigators would be well served by reading this book.

I teach Investigators in Brisbane, Australia and will advise my students to purchase and read this book.

Inventing Mormonism: Tradition and the Historical Record

Academic and detailed
The book's subtitle, "Tradition and the Historical Record," sums it all up very well.

The authors take an amazingly detailed look at the traditional history of the Mormon Church (pre 1830 for the most part), and compare it closely with contemporary documents. (i.e. property deeds, census, etc.)

In order to really understand this book, you may consider using a whiteboard to draw out the timelines. This should help you to understand the contradictions between what the traditional record is, and what historical records reveal. Otherwise, you will probably have a potpourri of dates shuffling around your head.

Very detailed and difficult to get into.
It belabors chronological events to the point of boredom. This said, it is a necessary exercise to determine the timing of events such as the First Vision of Joseph Smith, the visit of Moroni, etc.

Just don't read it passively. It's insightful and mostly balanced.
Though it does rely heavily on Eber Howe's biased affidavits regarding Joseph Smith's involvement in treasure digging. I remain unconvinced of their inherent historical value.

The Historical Joseph Smith
An in-depth look at Joseph Smith's world and how it shaped the founder of the LDS. An interesting read for those interested in Mormon history.

The thought is immense.
Good labor and a hard sweat aer earmarks of a good book. You must credit Wesley for the detailed footnotes that pepper this book, and make it firm in all things.

Things change, and I guess that is the essence of Mormonism. All is not what it was, but we can live with that since we know it is wrong.

This book is totally on the mark, since ther eis transion, change, and evolution, and Mormonism's progess is evidecne of its falsity. Good cannot get better.

On page 27, the page number is missing, and the word "Moroni" should be "Alma." The index was rather weak for my staste, but the binding held up as is cross-refernced the informatiopn with my otehr books. YOu can never have too good of a binding in a book.
