Cognition: An Epistemological Inquiry

Currently the finest book on cognition in English
Joseph Owens, Etienne Gilson's most gifted student and without doubt one of the towering philosophical masters of the 20th century, has produced a work which is both an introduction to cognition and a profound philosophical reflection. His ideas are at once new and old, phenomenological yet fully in accord with the principles of Thomas Aquinas.

There is no other book on this subject which approaches its breadth, intelligibility, subtlety and simplicity. This book will someday rank as a classic. It is perhaps among the top twnety books every philosopher must have in his library.

Extraordinary book, excellent thesis by Mr. Owen
Excellence and the most clear argument I ever read about cognition study, Truly recommended.

Pilates
I did and still do pilates classes once a week but couldn't get to the classes any other time and i wanted to do it more times a week so i bought this book. This book is very well presented with easy to follow instructions. It has pictures which are always excellent espesially when you are a beginner and dont really know what the positions look like. This book has been a great help for me to do pilates more than once a week and to rase my flexability level as well as my fitness and confidence in myself.

Great Book for Beginners
I bought this book just before I signed up for a 9 week introductory course in Pilates that was being run at a local evening college.

Reading all the introductory chapters gave me a great insite into the methods and helped me with understanding better what the instructor was telling us during the first session about the method.

When I got home from the each of the sessions, I was able to read about each of the excercises we completed during the session and understand better what the instructor was teaching us and also to remind me how they were done when I was doing them at home.

A great book, very clear and easy to understand.

The Complete Wartime Correspondence of Tsar Nicholas II and the Empress Alexandra: April 1914-March 1917 (Documentary Reference Collections)
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (March, 1999)
Author: Joseph T. Fuhrmann
Amazon base price: $150.00

Indispensible evidence
This united edition of the correspondence was long overdue. The letters of the Emperor and Empress appear together for the first time, cleansed of the transcription errors which spoiled the first (1923) edition of her correspondence, and of the tactful editing which expunged the more intimate passages from the 1929 version of his. Joseph Fuhrmann's footnotes are helpful, thoroughly researched and not unsympathetic to the writers. For students of Russian history, this book is an extraordinarily important source on the government of Russia immediately before the Revolution; it repays careful and open-minded reading. For those interested in the personal life and the characters of the last Tsar's family, it is arguably better still: here we have Nicholas II, affectionate and gentle, occasional author of rather poetic descriptions of scenery (this is not the Nicholas of the blandly factual diary). Here too his beloved Empress, sharp-tongued and energetic and interested in everything, very different to the tragic-eyed lady of legend. High politics and war jostle for attention with amusing little accounts of the childrens' activities, but there is never any doubt that the letters were written in serious times by people who understood and sought desperately to find a solution to the problems Russia faced. They certainly don't make light reading, but if you have the patience, these letters repay your perseverance.

Incredibly thorough, and frequently, relentlessly boring.
It's hard to believe these letters and telegrams were exchanged by a ruler and his wife under the immensely stressful conditions of WWI. I'm an aficionado of Imperial Russian History, but the unbelievable banality of this couple, relentlessly exposed in their own words is hard to take. A terrifically thorough book, it's a slow read--which certainly makes you feel you're getting your money's worth. I'm glad I bought it, and have learned more about these Romanovs even though their correspondence reveals shallowness and self-interest. Very good book, pitiful subjects.

Considerations on France

A Critique of Modernity.
Joseph de Maistre is one of the harshest counter-revolutionary critics of the French Revolution. He calls for a return to traditional Catholicism and the Restoration of the monarchy. The book _Considerations on France_ takes a look at his arguments for that tradition and his understanding of the dark side of human existence through his unique Christian perspective. De Maistre was both a Freemason and a Roman Catholic, an arch-conservative traditionalist, and a strong believer in the primacy of papal authority in the secular and spiritual realms. In this book, he criticizes those eighteenth century philosophers and their belief in progress and the "social contract" ideal. He explains why the traditional development of society is more appropriate, given the rootedness of man in sin. This is an important work to understand the thought of De Maistre, a Catholic reactionary.

Another vision of the French Revolution.
This book may be helpful for every person interested in the French Revolution. It shows a "reactionary" vision of the Revolution, and describes all the human right violations done by the revolutionaries. In de Maistre's view, the French Revolution is a divine punishment for France. France had not follow its special vocation: to be a stronghold of the christian faith, and therefore came the Revolution. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that all De Maistre's predictions became true, specially the Restauration of Monarchy. Most books about the French Revolution are pure apologies. If you want to read something very different, read this book.

Consumer Guide to Diamonds, 2nd edition

Best of its type!
Before I began shopping for an engagement ring for my fiance, I knew absolutely nothing about diamonds. Determined not to make a mistake in my purchase or pay more than I should, I researched the subject intensively. I bought six different books on the subject of buying diamonds, went to countless diamond dealers including many on 47th Street in NYC, and learned enough over time to make an informed purchase. The best single aid to my education, by far, was Joe Mirsky's book. His explanations were clear, objective, comprehensive and honest. His emphasis on the importance of the quality of the cut in determining the beauty of a diamond is right on! End result: a very happy fiance!

Worth its weight in Diamonds
How I wish that my wife and I would have had a great resource like this when we were choosing her diamond engagement ring! Like so many, choosing a diamond can be a huge financial - and emotional - investment. Here's a guide for those of us who are NOT gemologists. It's short - not a highly technical volume. But it can help anyone looking for a diamond to be a better, more confident consumer, and to take much of the anxiety out of the selection process.

What a great buy!

Unique look into the poet's mind
Solomon Volkov had a very good idea in putting together this book. Over a period of many years, he sat down with Brodsky and interviewed him about poetry, metaphysics and world events (with a little gossip thrown in for good measure). The result is a thorough and fascinating look at Brodsky's opinions at many different points in time. And the conversations are not just
one-sided: Volkov keeps up with Brodsky just fine, so it's like listening in on a tete-a-tete between two brilliant minds. If you like Brodsky you will love this book.

Lone Wolf Poet:Review of"Conversations with Joseph Brodsky
If you wade into the book,"Conversations with Joseph Brodsky," by Solomon Volkov (Free Press, 1998,) more or less by accident, as I did, prepare for immersion in deep waters. I was only peripherally aware of Brodsky's work, his background as a major Russian Jewish writer, emigree, and later Nobel Prize winner and American Poet Laureate based on reading his short poetic volume,"Watermark," (Farrar, Strauss, & Giroux, 1992.) Based on this work alone I should have been prepared for the depths of thinking, the force of personality, and the scholarly mind that earned him his esteemed position and global reputation as the,"Lone Wolf of Poetry." Brodsky is, if nothing else, like one of those rare gems we find originally mined from and cut to shape on Russian soil, but later ending up here in the United States, much to our cultural enrichment. Once here, in this setting of freedom, they seem to shine even more brilliantly than they ever could in their homeland. Clearly, poetry is Brodsky's realm, and yet in Volkov's meticulous rendering,(the book represents a compiliation of more than fifteen years of purposeful dialogues with Brodsky,) it is evident that Volkov uncovers the man, his life experiences, and his force of personality in a manner that perhaps Brodksy, with his grand sense of irony would appreciate, perhaps even take perverse pleasure from reading. Hearing Brodsky literally thinking out loud, as this book allows us to do, adds a deeper dimension to an understanding of his life's work, and passion. Tragically, Brodsky suffered an untimely death by heart attack Jan. 28,1996 at the age of fifty-five. The reason I say perverse appreciation, is that Brodsky, in his conversations, claims that a poet's work alone should speak for him, that one needs no further digging into the poet's personal life in order to grasp the significance of his writing. Among the many topics Brodsky thinks out loud about are some perhaps unexpected ones. For example, his love for the poetry of Robert Frost, W.H.Auden, and Robert Lowell, as well as his love for the great Russian Poets, Anna Akhmatova, Pushkin, and Marina Tsvetaeva. I found myself scrambling for my long buried volume,"The Poetry of Robert Frost, (Holt Rinehart and Winston,1969) to find the poems Brodsky discusses," Servant to Servants," and " The Wood-Pile." Even as I am reading his commentary, I have to remind myself that Brodsky is quoting these American poems from memory, improvising freely like a brilliant jazz soloist, a John Coltrane taking off in counterpoint to the questions Volkov poses to him. It's a brilliant duet in dialogue form. As such, if you love literature, and poetry, and know of Brodsky's work, or even if you have never heard of Brodksy, but would like to know more about Russian writers, this book is a treasure chest filled with literary gems. Also, it needs to be emphasized that in great measure, it is Solomon Volkov's remarkable ability to stimulate and challenge Brodsky on issues that makes the dialectic so vital. Clearly, Volkov's depth of knowledge, common Russian upbringing, and his own aesthetic sensibilities serve to bring out the best in Brodsky. Towards the end of the book they get into an intense dialogue about their homeland, in particualr, St.Petersburg, a city that looms very large in the background, much like the Chorus in Greek drama. Here the discourse becomes deeply personal, going far beyond the academic realm of literary works, and anecdotes about other writer's lives. St. Petersburg is an area that Volkov knows something about, as evidenced by his recent book,"St. Petersburg: A Cultural History." In the heat of their discussion Brodsky suddenly takes off on an inspired solo: "...in as much as Petersburg is a city by the sea, so the notion of freedom-perhaps phantasmagorical, but very powerful-inevitably arises in the consciousness of anyone living there. In this city, the individual is always going to strive to reach beyond because the space in front of him is not limited or delimited by land. Hence, the dream of unlimited freedom. This is why I think that in this city it is more natural to reject the whole existing world order..." It strikes me as particularly painful that this volume is the last, unless Volkov compiles a 2nd companion volume based on his records. No more chances to raise the hand to ask the master to explain what he meant when he said such and such. As was his wish, we now have to read his poems to figure it out for ourselves.

Healthy and delicious recipes
Of the many vegetarian recipes books I own, this is the one I return to the most. The recipes are delicious, turn out well consistently and have ingredients that I would normally have on hand. The nutritional information is listed with every recipe, which makes it easy to see at a glance, and the opening chapters are very informative about healthy eating. The recipes include enough spices to give them wonderful flavour without being too hot. A practical and inspiring book.

New vegetarian cookbook is very user friendly
Cooking Vegetarian by Vesanto Melina, R.D. and Joseph Forest is a very welcome addition to the top ten list of cookbooks every family, omnivore or vegetarian, should own. Easy to read and attractively designed, this specially bound paperback lies flat for ease of use when cooking.

The book includes a 20 page section called Healthy, Delicious and Easy, a healthful nutrition primer that provides up-to-date information of use to everyone. There are over 150 recipes, half of them low fat and heart healthy (there's a separate list of these with the percentage of calories from fat and fat grams given). Although some of the recipes are time-honored classics, many are imaginative, creative and simple to prepare. A section of attractive color photographs includes step-by-step illustrations for making sushi.

Cooking Vegetarian is a low-key, easy-going introduction to vegetarian cooking to go along with Melina's earlier classic, Becoming Vegetarian. It extols the pleasures of food and the joys of healthful living without upsetting those who choose to eat other ways and yet it may well serve as a eye-opening and non-threatening initiation to a healthier lifestyle.

Nobody says it better!
Joseph Murphy has written so many classical books and this is no exception. This book is well written and so easy to understand that anybody can benefit from the wonderful life-changing messages it contains. He details many case histories that show how we create our own problems ala cause and affect and how we can solve our problems when we seek the answers. His affirmations and prayers are simple to learn and easy to remember. He references the bible and explains where this information came from originally. Doctor Murphy comes across as a wise and concerned parent and a saint as he delivers the cosmic truth God has made available to all of his children.

USING THE FORCE
This book was clearly designed to reveal in a simple, down-to-earth manner and in everyday language how to lead a fuller, richer and more glorious life. The techniques and programs discussed enable one to use the mental and spritual laws based on right thinking. Chapters deal with inter alia, guidance, problem-solving, healing, success, faith, conquering obstacles, overcoming worry and how to be serene in a changing world. Many affirmations and meditations are provided, and there's a helpful summary of the main points at the end of each chapter. Dr Murphy is one of my favourite authors and this book is full of practical wisdom and inspiration. I would also like to recommend his great classic The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind to everybody - it is a very powerful work that has improved the lives of so many people.
