The first time I read this book, I was in High School and writing my paper on the Celtic traditions. I was so moved by this book that I have recommended it to everyone who would be interested in this topic. It was complete, concise, and beautifully written. It neither pushed nor excused any part of the religious aspects. It gave history as well as myth- mixed in with a little magik.

The Objective of Empowering Teachers is to clearly explain what successful principals do to empower teachers, ultimately improving learning. The book is based on data collected from 285 teachers in 11 schools that participated in a study associated with Carl Glickman's League of Professional Schools. The authors have based their book on shared governance, which they suggest is the foundation necessary for empowerment to occur. Therefore Blasé & Blasé wrote about common strategies and practices of successful principals who implemented shared governance. Only those principals described as successful were studied; success was measured based on League Criteria, annual reports, on site visitations, teacher reports and facilitator reports. The book, Empowering Teachers, is broken into ten easy to read chapters: 1) Shared Governance 2) Trusting the Experts: Why do we need trust 3) Creating Structures that help Teachers do Their Best 4) Supportive Resources 5) Encouraging Autonomy and Innovation 6) Modeling Personal Dimensions 7) About Risk and Threat 8) Valuing and Rewarding Good Work 9) Helping Solve Problems 10) Providing Leadership That is Facilitative and Democratic Each chapter describes a strategy, discusses its importance, and provides a break down of specific practices that are effective in implementing the strategy. An abundance of teacher feedback is also provided which describes how teachers felt about principals' techniques. The strategies the principals used affected the "three dimensions of teacher empowerment" to improve learning: · "The affective dimension: teacher satisfaction, motivation, esteem, confidence, security, sense of inclusion, identification with the group and its work (sense of "we") · The classroom dimension: innovation, creativity, reflection, autonomy, individualization of instruction, professional growth, classroom efficacy. · The schoolwide dimension: expression, ownership, commitment, sense of team, and schoolwide efficacy" Empowering Teachers could be utilized as a reference tool throughout a principal's career because it provides essential strategies for success.

Joe Cooke has sympathetically addressed the grief of the unloved wife in the story of Leah, the rebellion and destruction in the bitterness and lack of forgiveness in the shallow life of Esau, the terrible results in the family resulting from the disobedience of David despite his repentance, the degredation of the sexual addict in the story of Solomon, the wonder and simple faith of a child in the story of the boy and his lunch, the transformation of a money grubbing tax collector into one who cares and shares, the man who serves God, turns away and comes back, and the agony and release of the demonized from the standpoint of the pig farmer. Please read this. Perhaps you will find yourself and in this encounter with truth discover the answers for which you have been searching.

The Encyclopaedia of Animals: Mammals, Birds, Reptile, and Amphibians is a milestone in concise scientific, and current description of animal species. Any amature(or professional), could only benefit by having this book in there collection. It is a shame it is no longer in print after only been in circulation for only three years.

My first thought was that this book was a one-volume version of Histroy of the Church!
Unike "Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith," which is a collection of Joseph Smith's talks, "EJST" is a topical "quote book" compilation of Joseph Smith's teachings. The good is that it is easier to find what Joseph Smith said on a subject. The bad is that the context and the flow of the Prophet's logic is lost, so I use this book in conjuction with "Teachings." For example: the King Follet Discourse gets pretty hacked up by ellipses, But that is the hazard of having a "quote book," along with having someone else do your editing for you.

Some of the extras that are included in this book are eight accounts of the First Vision, and the poetic version of Section 76-"The Vision." The Editors also include reminisces from "They Knew the Prophet," and quotes from Journal of Discourses, when Church leaders quoted something the Prophet said that is not recoded elswhere. It is wonderful to see these gems get broader circulation, and hopefully, they will begin to percolate into our Sunday Schoool lessons and into our lives.

The biggest compliment that I have is that I teach Sunday School lessons with this book.

My only complaint is that there were some reminisces found in "Discourses of Wilford Woodruff," and one or two other quotes from Joseph Smith that would have been nice to include in the book. And it would have been nice to see the Wentworth letter in an appendix. But it is a thick enough book as it is.

Despite my one or two criticsms, this is a great book. Five stars!

The entries in this helpful encyclopedia may be brief, but no one would call them incomplete. From Marsel Proust to the methods of assessing the memory disorders to the different kinds of amnesia, this is the book to consult first, whatever the memory-related issue is. It's written in a concise, clear, and assessible language. In fact, it's just as interesting as any fiction book, in my personal opinion. Definitely something to own.

I was doing a research project on the McCarthy era and found this book at the library I couldn't believe my luck! This book has everything and everyone, from the major people like McCarthy himself, Alger Hiss, and the Rosenbergs down to the Cincinatti Reds (did you know they changed their name for a brief period during the McCarthy era?) If you would ever like to know more about the McCarthy era, look for this book.

Programmed learning appeals to all age levels. There is no anxiety nor confusion as one turns rapidly through this book. I have used this book with children who could read at the age of 7 and have received positive comments from adults who had missed a firm grounding in grammar. ESL learners also can profit from the guidance inherent in a programmed text.
