Excellent source for those interested in the Constitution
Joseph Story wrote some of the most important Supreme Court decisions during the early days of the country. This book explores, in detail, his views of the Constitution and it provides a fascinating view of how the Constitution was viewed in the early nineteenth century. Story borrows, liberally at some points, from the federalist papers and early Court opinions to back up his contentions. Each section is very carefully laid out, and the entire book is constructed to explain the Constitution passage by passage. The logical order and a good index make this book essential for Constitutional scholars and provide ease of use for the casual historian. Whether you are looking for the meaning of a single passage in the Constitution or if you just want to get a broad understanding of its meaning as a whole, I highly recommend this book.

The DEFINITIVE guide to Herodotus
This supplement to Herodotus is the most comprehensive work on Herodotus' History. By commenting on the text, archaeology, geography, and virtually every aspect relating to Herodotus, one may become familiar with the first history of the classical era. I strongly reccomend the two volumes for anyone who has read Herodotus before, as he/she will gain a deeper study of the work.

A Commentary on Jean-Paul Sartre's "Being and Nothingness"
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (October, 1985)
Author: Joseph S. Catalano
Amazon base price: $25.00
Average review score:

Joseph Catalano's A COMMENTARY OF "BEING and NOTHINGNESS"
If you find yourself extremely frustrated in your attempt to plow through Sartre's massive BEING AND NOTHINGNESS, there is simply no better guide than Catalano's commentary. No first time reader of Sartre's book should be without this guide. Catalano does not shy away from the difficult and abstruse points of BEING AND NOTHINGNESS, but helps the reader understand Sartre's rather peculiar style of phenomenology. If one wants to understand one of the landmark works of 20th century Continental philosphy, one needs to read this original text. However, most nonacademic readers, and even most professional American philosophers, lack the crucial background to truly grasp what Sartre is attemtping to accomplish. Before reading BEING AND NOTHINGNESS, I recomend reading several of Sartre's literary works, and two shorter philosophical texts, THE TRANSCENDENCE OF THE EGO and THEORY OF THE EMOTIONS. Then expect to spend several months (at least if you have to work for a living) with Sartre's treatise. Be sure to have Catalano's book by your side. It will give you both the necessary background for understanding the text, as well as lucid commentary on some very difficult passages of Sartre's work. In the end, do not shy away from the original text. Even if you find yourself unsympathetic to Sartre's ideas and style of philosophy, I believe you will find that Sartre has some rather vivid insights about human existence.

An in-depth study by an honest man
Joseph Shulam is familiar with the traditions, practices, and history of his people - the Jews. Joseph Shulam is Jewish, but he is a Messianic Jew, which means he believes the Messiah has already come, and the Messiah is Jesus Christ. His life is an example of being on the front lines of faith, and he has been threatened, beaten, shunned, and hated because of his beiefs.

Shulam is a Biblical scholar, as well as an authority on Jewish customs and history. He brings a totally different point of view into this in-depth study of Romans because of his dual heritage.

Dedicated students of the Torah and the Bible will want to add this excellent book to their collection.

Excellent for both beginning or active commodity traders.
This short paperback (120 pages) contains priceless information on proper placing of "stops" in the commodity markets. It's around 20 years old but it's application can make the difference over time between being a winning trader or a losing one.

The best text available for teachers of public speaking.
If you are interested in teaching public speaking or in coaching competitive speech and debate teams, I believe this is the book you need. It is the best text for teachers of public speaking I have ever seen. It is especially valuable to those who are involved in competitive public speaking activities because it addresses the issues of ethics in competition as well as the specifics of contest rules and how to prepare for contests. The organization of the text facilitates use with speech and debate teams as well as regular classes. The activities which are included with each chapter are useful. In short, it is a book any teacher of speech and/or debate should have.

Great resource for Protestants and Roman Catholics alike!
As a protestant pastor frustrated by the lack of material from my own church for the use in lay Communion ministry and convinced of the Roman church's high standards of liturgy and sacrament I ordered this book. IT IS FANTASTIC! Order a copy for each Lay Minister of Communion. The book in pamphlet form will transform both clergy and lay Communion to the sick, hospital, and homebound from passing them a piece of bread into a time of worship where those receiving the sacrament are made a part of the congregation and the Eucharistic celebration. For the protestant, a few minor editorial changes may be desirable. For the Roman Catholic...I am jealous of your resources and pray that one day the church will once again serve our God with one name. If the ministry of the laity will extend beyond Eucharist an extended resource called "A Ritual For Laypersons" is also available.

The REAL Enemy of the People - "COMMUNISM"
This is a brilliant study of the evil of Communism, written before we had the unfortunate chance to feel its awful effects for the numerous decades following the original printing of this book.

an undergraduate's analysis
I aquired this book at a APA meeting a few weeks ago and it has been a great reference - although it is not as indepth as it could be - but for the range of topics and philosophers it is very good - don't worry it is not just analytic philosophy - it covers continental too - and some non-western philosophies but not many - the style of writing is very clear and easy to read - it's worth the money -

The Companion to Southern Literature: Themes, Genres, Places, People, Movements, and Motifs

Sit Down with Southern Comfort
The Companion is a massive (1000+ pp)encyclopaedic approach to Southern literature (and culture, though The Companion makes no explicit claims toward tackling that subject). It has articles on people and works among other things, each authored by a wide variety of modern scholars. There is a wonderful index and a table of contents that arranges entries by groups (including Themes, Language, Religion, Music, etc.). The Companion is as current as any book of this type can be; thus, while the Companion contains entries on the Internet and some contemporary authors, both of these entries are destined to be somewhat dated even before the book hit the presses. It is a useful volume for students of Southern Literature, though, as with any encyclopedia, it must be considered as first-stop. The Companion refers readers to other texts and doesn't pretend to exhaust the subject matter of any of its entries. The Companion should also find favor with teachers who include (or want to include) Southern authors in their classrooms. The Companion provides instructors with quick reference contexts for many works that might profitably be included in a classroom.
