Excellent for Chemist with Basic Knowledge of Spreadsheets
Unlike some books, this book is not just a paraphrase of Excel's help file. The book is written for the professional chemist. It uses examples from chemistry to show how Excel can easily handle many graphing and data analysis problems. The reader should have a basic knowledge of spreadsheets. If you haven't used spreadsheets before, this book will be overwhelming.

The first chapter is an introduction to Excel. Even the experienced user will find something new here. My favorite was learning that a shortcut menu listing all sheets in a workbook is available by right-clicking on any of the sheet tab scroll buttons.

The second chapter (10 pages) explains how to make basic graphs in Excel. Many people have Excel, but are unaware of how easy it is to make graphs with Excel. Chapter 5 shows how to construct advanced charts with, for example, multiple axis, error bars, and smoothed lines.

Chapter 3 starts to get into the power user stuff, such as making formulas more understandable by using named ranges. I had quit using names because they apply to every sheet in a workbook; this chapter shows how to make the name apply to just one sheet. The chapter also does a very good job of showing how to construct huge formulas ("megaformulas").

Chapter 4 explains how to use array formulas. This chapter is valuable because Excel's help file doesn't provide much information on using arrays. Arrays make for much cleaner-looking spreadsheets.

Chapter 6 shows how to use Excel's database features to keep track of, for example, a chemical inventory list. Since I don't use these features very often, it is nice to have them described where I can use them when I need them. The same can be said about appendix E, "Shortcut Keys for the PC and Macintosh".

Chapter 7 describes how to import data into a spreadsheet. If you have more data than you want, this chapter shows how to extract every, say, 10th data point.

Chapter 8 shows how option buttons, check boxes, list boxes, etc. can simplify use of a spreadsheet. For example, I needed to enter a number and convert it to pH, pOH, Ka, or Kb, depending on what was entered. Using the info in this chapter, I now just click on an option button, and the sheet does the appropriate conversions.

Chapters 9-12 are about spreadsheet mathematics. Goal Seek, linear regression and Solver are covered. What really makes this material useful is that it tells how to do a statistical analysis of the results, even for non-linear regression.

Chapters 13-19 illustrate how to use Visual Basic for Application (VBA), the programming language built into Excel. The code examples are clearly the work of an amateur programmer. "Option Explicit" is omitted, only arrays are dimensioned, the standard method of indenting to improve readability is not used, and-horrors-the author uses GoTo statements. Nonetheless, these chapters do show the basics of programming with VBA. The CD includes many code examples, including a neat program for formatting chemical equations. For example, it will subscript the 2 in H2O.

Chapters 20-23 are more applications. I especially liked learning how to deconvolute a spectrum with Excel.

The book isn't perfect-a few typos, organization could be improved, one of the files on the CD wouldn't open-but if you are a chemist and want to become better at using Excel, this is the book you need. I wish my company had given me this book when I started using Excel in industry. It would have saved a lot of time.

Excel for Biomedical Researchers
I have bought several books on using Excel for scientists, engineers, etc. However, of the six I have bought, this one by Billo is the most helpful.

If you already know the basics about spreadsheets, then this book is packed with pearls that enhance your productivity and get you powerful results. It will take me years to exhaust the potential.

The CD ROM with the book is very good as well, with examples for the more complex subjects.

I use this reference to evaluate complicated data with multiple interactions on animal and human data in biomedical research. I do research in PET (Positron Emission Tomography) imaging.

While this book is no substitute for a professional biostatistician, the book has helped me to not only follow the progress and interrelationships of the data but also to more clearly communicate my needs to a professional biostatistics firm. This also saves me money since it saves the biostatisticians time. I also think it improves results.

I highly recommend this book.

Enriching
This collection of papers on the Family in ancient Israel covers the various periods of Israelite history. From pre-monarchy to second temple Judaism the chapters discuss many aspects of the family. The various authors discuss the members of the family, divorce, inheritance, and other issues that families of old as well as modern families experience. The ancient Israelite family was similar to those in the ancient Near East in their work ethic, structure, and culture.

This book helps the American family redefine their concept of family, extended family, and household as a source of strength for their cultural development.

Behind the Biblical Family
This is the book for anyone who has ever wondered about the political homage paid to the "biblical family" in recent years. Profiting from recent breakthroughs in the study of Hebrew scriptures, this book, one of a series produced by the Religion, Culture, and Family Project of the University of Chicago Divinity School, argues that the family in ancient Israel should be understood as a complicated, multi-generational "household" system organized around a core "covenant" between father and mother, parents and children, households and land, and families and God. The ancient Hebrew family was hardly the "nuclear family" of today. Codes of hospitality insured that even outsiders and marginal members of the community were included when necessary. Indeed, the ancient Hebrew family resembled more the "village" concept, not only for raising children, but for building up community. Religious ideas in ancient Israel gave order and significance to the practical realities of family life, and were closely connected to the realities of household labor, land, wealth, procreation, inheritance, economic profit and loss, sickness, and dependency. This book is the only recent comprehensive review in the English language of the family in ancient Israel. It is well worth reading for anyone who wants to understand the biblical families of the Old Testament.

A new look for a classic reference work.
The 5th edition of "Famous First Facts" is a virtually complete make over of a classic reference work. Joseph Nathan Kane, who published the first edition over 65 years ago, has been joined by Steven Anzovin and Janet Podell in compiling the information (Mr. Kane was born in 1898, so he's entitled). Some features in the new edition seem confusing at first, but are not a major hindrance to finding information. The first thing an experienced user will notice is that all entries are assigned a 4-digit number, beginning with the first entry on page 1, # 1001, through the last entry, # 8155, on page 629. The five indexes (which take up almost 500 additional pages) use these reference numbers to guide the reader to information. The main change involves the organization of categories, which have been rearranged to be more topical, rather than strictly alphabetical as in previous editions. Broad categories are divided into one or two subcategories. The problem is that not all the entries in the 4th edition have been retained in the current volume. In the 4th edition, for example, the first five entries under the main category FOOTBALL PLAYER list the first (a) Athlete enshrined in 2 Halls of Fame [with a cross-reference to the category Hall of Famer]; (b) Black football player to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy; (c) Football player to punt 98 yeards; (d) Football player to score 50 points in 1 game; and (e) Woman football player (professional). In the new edition, item (a) which refers to Cal Hubbard, is missing. His name is not in the index. Hubbard is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (as a player) and the Baseball Hall of Fame (as an umpire). Item (b) is now under AWARDS-SPORTS-BASEBALL. Steve O'Neal's 98-yard punt (item (c)) has been dropped. Item (d) is under SPORTS AND RECREATION-FOOTBALL. Item (e) can be found under SPORTS AND RECREATION-FOOTBALL-GAMES, with the heading "Professional football game in which a woman participated." Some updating of language is to be expected ("African-American" has replaced "Black"), but other changes might be seen as examples of political correctness. Under WOMAN, the 4th edition lists the first "Heroine publicly rewarded was Hannah Duston." The new edition states, under POPULATION-SETTLEMENT the first "Settler heroine publicly rewarded was Hannah Duston." Two changes in the new edition detract in some measure from its usefulness. Previous editions had references to published source materials at the end of many entries. Older editions also used full personal names wherever possible, with nicknames in quotation marks. In the 4th edition, for example, the entry on Hanna Duston (see previous paragraph) referred the reader to "George Wingate Chase -- The History of Haverhill." The 4th edition tells us the first "Baseball player (major league) killed in a game was Raymond Johnson ("Ray") Chapman ... who was accidentally hit on the left side of his head by pitcher Carl William ("Willie") Mays ... in a game at the Polo Grounds, New York City, on August 16, 1920." The new edition says the first "Major league baseball player killed in a game was Raymond Johnson Chapman ... who was accidentally hit on the left side of his head by a pitch thrown by Willie Mays[.]" A youngster reading this entry might think that this Willie Mays is the same Willie Mays who played outfield for the New York/San Francisco Giants in the 1950s and '60s. There is at least one item of misinformation from the 4th edition that has not been corrected. The first postage stamp depicting a Jew was NOT the 3-cent commemorative honoring Samuel Gompers, issued January 27, 1950. It was, in fact, the Four Chaplains 3-cent stamp issued May 28, 1948. The stamp was a tribute to the four military clergymen who went down with the S.S. Dorchester, so that others could take seats in lifeboats. One of the chaplains pictured is Rabbi Alexander D. Goode. I found the following entry a bit puzzling: The first "Pope to visit the White House in Washington, DC, was Pope John Paul II, who flew across the Atlantic in Shepherd 1, landing in Boston, MA, on October 1, 1979. In six days he visited Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Urbandale, IA, Chicago, and Washington. He returned to Rome from Andrews Air Force Base, near Washington, on October 6." Here's a question: On which date did Pope John Paul II visit the White House? The entry doesn't say. One thing I found interesting was that entries within a category or subcategory are arranged chronologically, rather than alphabetically. So, under NEWS, the first four items are "Opinion poll" (1824), "News dispatch by telegraph" (1844), "News dispatch by commercial telegraph" (1844), and "Press censorship by military authorities" (1861). When items are read in order, the reader follows a timeline of the innovations in a given subject. Although I might sound like a nitpicker, I do recommend this book.

Great reference & General Reading
I received this book as a gift about a year and a half ago & didn't look at it at all. One lazy evening,I picked it up and began leafing through it. I haven't put it down in over four months. It's a book of firsts organized by exacting categories and its utterly interesting. You'll be reading and leafing through it for many years.

A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK
There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.
However, most botanist may not be pleased to know that little attention was paid to plant viruses. Again, many potential buyers may be demoralized by the rather high price that this virology-set demands.

Another Bible. Amazing viral world
It covers all fields of virology. Perfect and wonderful ! Easy to understand. I really recommend this book to who is involved in biology

Fighting Joe Hooker
Concentrates well on Hooker's role within the Federal Army. There are detailed accounts of his relationships with superiors and subordinates alike. Well researched and descriptive accounts of his role and the role of his units in key battles. The author fails to use direct quotations enough and tells the reader what was said rather than allowing the speaker's own words to be used. Very helpful in researching the early movements and battles of the III Corps, 2nd Div.

Great book
This book did a excelent job explaning how fighting joe rose to the head of the army. This book take you through joes childhood and laterlife.

A good book, if you know what you are looking for
As stated above, I find this book very good. The only thing keeping this book from getting 5 stars is the lack of examples. No tutorials, no step by step If you are fairly skilled, this book is e gem.

Ola

Everyone should have a piece of this!
Very very well written book!

First Strawberries - a definite pick!
This Cheyenne tale is a great lesson about how words of anger hurt and about forgiveness. Also a nature pour-quoi tale! Can be shared easily with very young, important message for older boys and girls as well as adults. After reading this, eating strawberries will be just a little sweeter!

Get this book!
I love this book both for it's great story and because it is a terrific resource for teachers. It's one of those books (like Where the Wild Things Are or Runaway Bunny) that just grabs kids up and speaks directly to things they are deeply connected to. In this case: inequity, anger and how to deal with those feelings.

If you are a teacher (or parent) and want a book that addresses these issues witout being overly complicated or inauthentic - run, don't walk and buy this wonderful book!

Free Choice in Saint Maximus the Confessor

A Sophisticated Introduction to Must Reading in Orthodoxy
Fareell's work is not a light read, but it is well worth the trouble. One would do well to have some kind of basic knowledge of the early church and the neo-platonic and Aristotelean philosophies before diving into this text. Farrell's work outlines the debate over the two natures in Christ in the 5th and 6th centuries very well. He clearly presents the theological and philosophical issues and what was at stake. He also does a wondeful job of outlining the thought of Maximus the Confessor, who is an absolute must for understanding Eastern Orthodox theology. Farrell also compares the Eastern approach on grace, free will and predestination with that of a more Western or Augustinian perspective. If you are looking for a sophisticated theological/philosophical work to assist you in understanding Eastern Orthodoxy and the differences that exist between it and Western Theology, this is a must read. That only thing that I would have enjoyed seeing more of, was more comparison with Augustinianism. If you are coming from a Reformation background this work is necessary to understanding the crucial differences and the growing influence of Eastern Orthodoxy.

Free Will, Grace, and Providence
THis is an excellent analysis of the value of Saint Maximus' contribution to the Church's understanding of grace, nature, freedom , and providence. Farrell is a brilliant thinker with the ability to sustain several highly detailed discussions at the same time in an original manner that sheds a much needed light on the questions that seem to plague the East-West discussion over humanity's freedom and GOd's providence. THis is a difficult book even for someone experienced with the subject matter, so be prepared to take some time to chew on this for before swallowing!

The analysis of Augustin in light of Maximos was the best part for me, since it is so central to so many debates among Christians. He starts his section of Augustin withthe interesting quote from Karl Barth that, "all the dubious features of Calvin's doctrine [of predestination] result from the basic failing that in the last analysis he seperates God and Jesus Christ." Very good reading! Enjoy!

Excellent Intro to famous lovers in history!
I first read this book while still in high school. But I never forgot the stories, especially the one of Heloise and Abelard. They became so real to me that I then started one of the best educations of my life just looking out for anything I could find on these wonderful people and their loves. An excellent buy, I highly recommend if it can be found.

You will never ever forget this book
I stumbled upon this book the first time in the library. I sat in the back of the library and read all day.For four two years now I have been trying to hunt this book down.

Not only do they pleasure us with true romance but they dont mind telling those beautiful stories of same sex couples either. I was just in awe of the amazing group of people choosen to be the focus - they are some of the most talented forces who lived the reality of that fine dividing line between genious and insane. I felt somewhat honered to be invited into their private lives for a while.

All in all it is one of those books that you feel the better for reading. And it is wonderful to read with your loved one.
