A Passing Acquaintance
Published in Hardcover by Carlton Press (February, 1992)

Worth reading but only if you haven't read "Killer Clown"
Diehard true crime fans will recognize author Joe Kozenczak as the same man who led the 1978 police investigation that resulted in the arrest of serial killer John Wayne Gacy. Because Kozenczak and his officers were so heavily involved in the case, I had hoped that this book might rival the definitive book on Gacy's crimes, "Killer Clown" by Gacy co-prosecutor Terry Sullivan. Alas, this book had so little additional information to relate that I sometimes questioned why it had been written at all.

Reading this book was like having a long case of deja vu because it so closely mirrors the organization of "Killer Clown." In fact it sort of reads like an abridged version of that book. Kozenczak and coauthor Henrikson chose to structure their narration just as Sullivan did -- chronologically -- but rather than filling in any gaps, they left out countless details while failing to add anything new to the grim tale. Given that Kozenczak's book was printed almost ten years after Sullivan's, the lack of any new insight or relevant information was a big disappointment to me.

The book is capably written but is otherwise unremarkable except for being conspicuously short on pages (192 in the hardback). However, I'm not being 100% fair when I say there wasn't any new information herein; Kozenczak does give details about the two psychics he consulted during the Gacy investigation, something which was (and remains) rather controversial. This book isn't a bad read and so it's worth an objective rating of 3 stars, but I can't help feeling that it could have been a lot better. Anyone who really wants to learn about the true horror of John Wayne Gacy's crimes should turn instead to Terry Sullivan's fine book on the case.

Pelagius and the Fifth Crusade
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (June, 1950)
Author: Joseph P. Donovan
Amazon base price: $36.50
Average review score:

Who in the world is Pelagius?
There many things that can be said about the crusades, and often, many things have been said about the crusades. Donovan's work is a little different. His intention is to focus on Pelagius, papal legate and somewhat leader of the Fifth Crusade. This book is not for those with simply a passing interest in the crusades. It is instead intended by the author to be an overview of the success and failure of the Fifth Crusade specifically, and how Pelagius contributed to that. He says in his Preface, "The life of Pelagius does not offer any solution for our current world problems. It is not even 'escape literature.'" This should be noted before deciding to read this book. While Donovan's book is very interesting and presents a vivid description of the Fifth Crusade, this book is not meant for everyone, only those who have an extreme interest in either Pelagius or the Fifth Crusade.

The Perfect Stranger

Love's mysteries, that no one can explain
This slim volume recounts the author's young life, and his struggle to find the meaning of existence. When he met Sally, everything became suddenly clear. The author says this is not an autobiography, but the story of a rescue: he talks about himself only to explain what he was rescued from. He tries to express something which cannot be expressed directly, but only as if 'to be seen out of the corner of the eye'. So the reader may be disappointed that he says so little about his great love. The book ends abruptly with Sally's early and sudden death.

It is good to have evidence that perfect love and perfect happiness are possible on this earth, though given to very few.

You can read more about Sally in Rosamond Lehemann's 'The Swan in the Evening'.

Simon & his Followers. A night-vision, blurred by lightening
There is no reason. There are signs. But the notable connexion inbetwix these entities is of a questionable nature. It is to this nature, that msr. Simon poses his wellput questions, unveiling mother nature from her evening gown, caressing her soft bosom with gentle touches of fleshburning acids. The bones of truth unveiled. The unborn unthought of reality, kissing itself, liquid desire recovering of loss of self. Signs. Un-signs. Nothing remains unthought of.

PLANTER OF MALTA, A

Deceived by Title
I ordered the book because I believed it to take place on the island of Malta. I found that the island referred to is "Malata", somewhere in the South Pacific.

I doubt that the story was originally published with "Malta" in it's title. Publisher, please correct.

(It is, however, an enjoyable novella.)

Not too bad
The only problem I have with these types of books is that they are somewhat outdated, as there are better and more complete books in print and on the market right now; however, if you should come across a copy at a used book store or at an auction, it might be worth checking out. This book covers the following: How psychic energy manifests itself, techniques to increase and control your psychic energy, prophecy, dowsing, past lives recovery, claivoyancy, telepathy, and psychometry. If you are looking for something on this subject, try to find these books: How to Uncover Your Past Lives by Ted Andrews; How to Develop and Use Psychic Touch by Ted Andrews; Psychic Development for Beginners by William Hewitt

Public Administration: Concepts and Cases
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin College (December, 1992)
Author: Richard Joseph Stillman
Amazon base price: $32.76
Used price: $3.15
Average review score:

Okay- but its coming out of left field.
Ideologically this book extols Wilsonian-Weberian bureaucracy. It has an adulation for statecraft science and public administration and none for the Constitution and the Rule of Law. The cases make for interesting discussion in a Public Administration Survey class, but the questions are quite leading. (Hence, if you have a liberal professor, you best give the right... I mean 'left' answer.) The Constitutionality of any laws and policies are irrelavent to the authors. The problem with Public Administrators is that they are basically taught to be pragmatic- bend the law a little and improvise. For a conservative or libertarian this book could be tempered with 'The Tyranny of Good Intentions' and 'Lost Rights.'
