This book is for Florida native landscape dummies
This book helps you find out which plant community you probably have in your area, and then tells you how to redesign your landscape with that plant community in mind. It gives lists of plants for your particular plant community, too.

I can envision a second edition of this book with a map of Florida that shows where the different plant communities are, which nurseries in your area carry those native plants that are listed, and other features.

Send a Message Without Words
This miniature book is organized alphabetically by flower name and holds a surprising amount of information within it's tiny pages. For centuries symbols have been used in place of writing. Symbols cross the language barriers and one need not be literate to know what they mean. In fact, that is why flowers have been used as symbols, for most of history only the privilaged were literate. A rose may be a rose by any other name, yet the color and kind say volumes. Perfect for the inarticulate man or woman who needs to send a letter of love or apology. Excellent for well-wishers or thank yous, even for going-away gifts and anniverseries. Well worth your money. I know it was well worth mine. The reason it got a seven was not the fault of the publisher. The space was too limited for all the information I wished for it to contain, such as, pictures of the flowers and even more meanings. The pictures that are in the book are exquisite.

Divide and Rule
Very Interesting book for those avid readers interested in the few years before and after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. The book shows how England decieved the Arabs by making false promises of independence once the Arabs completed thier revolt against the Ottomans. Arabs ended up with British and French mandates instead. Lawrence was himself betrayed by his own government. The book gives a lot of detail on the daily life of bedouins, so some might find it interesting. The author should have dealt more with Lawrence's view of Zionism and the Balfour declaration and British policies in the region.

Letter from an Empty Valley: Ten Meditations on the Post Industrial Age

Thought-provoking good read
Letter From an Empty Valley is comprised of essays, but the lyrical title hints at the poetry within the prose. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, not only for its subject matter, but also especially for the author's writing style. Mr. Yale has a finely tuned sensibility toward differing cultures and is able to convey the subtlest nuances with sharp insight and wit. Emotions roil as you share details of daily habits - lives - ill served by the charge toward technology.

I would compare some of the underlying thoughts to Daniel Bell's modern classics "The End of Ideology" and "The Coming of Post Industrial Society," but find Letter From an Empty Valley more accessible. Bell makes a good argument; Yale makes good reading. And by that, he makes his point very well.

GOOD FOR INDIAN WAR BUFFS
This book is written by a newsman of the late 1800's. His attempt at times to make the exploits of his chief character a little bigger than they were sometimes gets in the way. However if you can be disciplined enough to read through it you will find a pretty accurate picture of the man who was probably General Crook's favorite scout and a key player in the death of Crazy Horse. Maybe not quite the villian in the Crazy Horse death as many think, but possibly not entirely sqeaky clean. Worth reading for those who have more than a passing interest in the Indian Wars of the latter half of the 1800's.

Life of James J. Hill

A great if biased biography of an influential man
First published in 1917, just a year after Hill's death, Pyle's book is part history part adulation. As the most complete source of information about Hill until his personal records were opened to the public in the 1970s, this book itself is a unique part of rail history.

Hill built the Great Northern Railway and was said to have "conquored more land with the coupling pin than Julius Ceaser with a sword." By the time of his death, he was controversial, accused of being a "Robber Baron" and of overcharging shippers. Pyle was a Hill employee and speechwriter who was biased, so this book should be treated more as entertainment and a source of anecdotes than as fact. From that point of view, it is a great book.

Hype meets History
This book was written during the post-assasination hype following Jesse James' death. The author claims to have gotten much of his material from Jesse's wife and mother. They deny they contributed yet apparently did receive royalties. The author writes a good story and quotes many good first-hand sources, though make allowances for hype-driven inaccuracies. It's good reading.
