More info than undermountain box
I liked this a bunch. It will help in any campaign. The descriptions were well done of the different areas of skullport and I liked the discription of the river channels. It was much easier to figure out how to prevent folks from just invading skullport and why the Lords allow it to exist below the city of Waterdeep. It was useful in finding out the spy network from Waterdeep that exists here also. If you are looking to have an undermountain campaign this book is a MUST. It will allow your PC's to have a city to interact in without drudging all the way to Waterdeep, another 3 levels up.

Great book but the price is a few bucks too high
The art in this book is amazing. It is a must if you are running a campaign in Undermountain. Compared to the few paragraphs written about Skullport in The Undermountain boxed set series this book blew me away. It tells about many NPCs and taverns; it also provides some great pictures to give you the feel of the Underdark. The only problem I have with this book is the price, although it is jammed full of information it still isn't very long, and there are no maps. I think maybe the book would be better priced at $15 instead of $20.

If you ever plan to strand your PCs in a dangerous place,...
then buy this accessory. Skullport is the perfect place to be used by a fiendish DM or anyone looking for trouble. This place is lovely in a unique sort of way: the concept is pulled off masterfully and is very well thought out. The text is good but not so full as to stifle any hope of DM creativity ( which means you can glue bits and pieces of Skullport to your own home-made campaign). The graphics are dark and moody. One thing I can gripe at is the unstable binding for the books and booklets, which will fall apart easily. Also, as it is, Skullport is an awfully small place to forever wander, and as your players at some point will wander out of it (probably sooner than later), I don't see this one being replayed too often. Buy it if you like this sort of thing.

Pretty good light reading
I give this one three stars only because it's not up there with the great literature of our time. It's just a good read. The characters are well developed and you find yourself caring about them.

The slow motion chase scene at the end was very well written. Not the kind of thing you see every day. A nice touch!

Joseph Wambaugh's best
"The Black Marble" is not only the author's best, but quite possibly the best of the entire genre. Wambaugh's trademark dark humor, authentic Los Angeles setting, and genuinely likable characters propel this fast-paced tale about the LAPD and a dog-napping scheme gone woefully wrong. A.A. Valnikov, a slovenly, boozy, but tender-souled Slavic veteran, is determined to rescue the doggie in distress. His new partner, Natalie Zimmerman, is determined to get him fired from the Force and out of her life... until she comes to know him and the nightmares which torment him. This book is as terrific today as it was twenty years ago, even if now a trifle "dated". It's often poignant, sometimes tragic, frequently hilarious, and ultimately heart-warming. Read it; it will leave you feeling good and wishing you could really meet the characters!

Wambaugh's best!
I loved "The New Centurions" and "The Blue Knight" and "The Glitter Dome" and I find his latest books to be big disappointments. This book, however, is something else. Wambaugh takes it to a new level. Magnificent!!

No Oscar for this "Star Witness"
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Buffa's previous four books, I was astonished at how disappointing this one was. The basic idea was intriguing, but neither the storytelling itself, the characterizations, the pacing, nor the language were anywhere near as sharp as in his previous books. Joseph Antonelli is a fascinating character, and one of the things that has always attracted me was his intellectual approach to the law. This is a man who has inherited an incredible library and who is clearly well educated, and in this book there were so many basic grammar and syntax errors that it's hard to imagine it was edited at all, let alone proofread! Everything about it bespoke a kind of writing fatigue, and I can only hope with his next book the author will have regained his previous edge.

I liked the author's style....

I didn't expect to like this Hollywood murder/courtroom drama as much as I did. The material has been done in a thousand other books....famous film director marries younger star...she's killed in a dramatic fashion....he's framed/arrested/put on trial....good attorney is hired to represent him/figure out who actually did it/restore the director's reputation.

What surprised me about this book was the author's literary craftsmanship. He employs a simple writing style to shed a harsh light on Hollywood glitz and glamour, showing what actually happens in the world of show business. There isn't a lot of action...and he doesn't overuse dialogue.

Reading this book was like being in the presence of a very good storyteller who makes you want to sit a spell and listen to what he has to say, because you know it's going to be good and it's going to be worth your precious spare time.

Enjoy!

Another Hollywood Murder Mystery
Defense attorney Joseph Antonelli continues making his way down the Pacific coast in the latest book of the series. The past book had Antonelli heading south from Portland, Oregon, to San Francisco, and now he is in Hollywood defending a famous director (and studio head) accused of murdering his movie star wife. A combination legal thriller and Hollywood-based melodrama, Buffa places Antonelli in a middle of recognizable Hollywood types drawn from real life, with elements of the O.J Simpson case thrown in. In a cute twist, the reader is made aware early that Antonelli will be a character in a big movie. Like a snake devouring its own tail the fictional murder story evolves into a fictional movie as the plot progresses.

As usual Antonelli will have a close relationship with an attractive female character, and numerous clues will be dropped along the way to point the reader in one of several directions regarding the killer. Hopefully, Antonelli will not return to Hollywood, and return to accused murderers who engender more sympathy from the reader.

A most painful book to read!!
I just finished reading "Taken at the Flood: Robert E. Lee and Confederate Strategy in the Maryland Campaign of 1862"
by Joseph L. Harsh.

Ouch!!!! Talk about painful!!! Harsh (a history professor who grew up in Hagerstown) simply cannot write!! Some people can write well; others write poorly. Harsh is at the bottom of the latter group. (I feel sorry for his students -- they probably suffered severe ear and brain trauma from his lectures. And he writes as if he were lecturing!!)

He LOVES R.E. Lee. (According to Harsh, everything that went wrong was someone else's fault -- without exception!!) Then there are Harsh's numerous "moments" when he tells you what a particular person MUST have been thinking at any given time -- as if Harsh (or anyone else!!) could know! Finally come are his analyses of various events and situations. In Harsh's eyes, all ideas that contradict his opinions OBVIOUSLY MUST be wrong -- it's just plain "foolish" to think otherwise.

It's too bad that Harsh just didn't tell what happened and allowed us to form our own judgements. (By the way, he plays pretty "fast and loose" with the facts. Plus, he omits vital information that doesn't correspond to his interpretation.)
In his preface, Harsh even has the audacity to state that, besides his book, there are only one or two other books that cover the Maryland Campaign in depth. Well, I have been studying Antietam for over 35 years, have been there several hundred times, and have read literally thousands of books, articles, and documents about Antietam. Harsh is full of it!!

If you were thinking of buying this book, don't bother. You can gain just as much by pulling out all your teeth with a pair of pliars, then dropping a 200-pound lead weight on your foot.

Well Done
I agree with much the prior reviewers have said. Although I am not a Civil War buff, I found the book readable. I appreciate his methodology also. Harsh attempts to reconstruct the intelligence available to Lee when he made crucial decisions and to assess his decisions based on the moves he could have made given what he knew and in light of his strategic aims for the campaign. All historians should stick by this method. He also does a very creditable job in his attempt to ascertain what Lee knew. On balance very well researched and well argued. I especially enjoyed the end in which he places his argument within the context of existing historiography on the subject. One criticism I have relates to the maps, which is discussed in the review of one of Dr. Harsh's other books. I bought Landscape Turned Red as the result of reading Taken at the Flood. And the maps are much more helpful in that Sears's book. When you are dealing with a lot of different place names and different corps moving around, it makes the flow a lot easier.

(Disclaimer: I sat in on a few classes of Dr. Harsh's as an undergraduate).

Harsh Light on Lee
Much praise has been heaped on Dr. Harsh for this defining work on the Maryland Campaign of 1862. Awards have rolled in - perhaps the setup for the Pulitzer Prize for his planned upcoming works on the Union Side of the first two years of the American Civil War in the eastern theatre. Certainly, Harsh's approach of - what did they know, when did they know it, what did they do with information? - represents a step forward in understanding this critical campaign. Perhaps this method is taken a little too far, perhaps the author is too contrarian, eager to dispel existing notions and overturn previous judgements, but that's the fun of it - great academic arguments will result. Harsh's academic method - he is currently Professor of History at George Mason University, a school that he originally lobbied to be called "The University of Northern Virginia" (non-ACW fanatics didn't get it) - is unquestioned. A critical, thorough survey has been conducted of available original source material as well as established secondary sources. All told, it is an amazing story. This work is the result of decades of labor on this subject (Harsh is a native of Hagerstown, MD). One of the great points to be made here is that Lee was human after all, he made some significant mis-judgements. If you didn't know it from other exposures to Dr. Harsh you couldn't deduce from this work that Harsh consider Lee to be one of our countries finest soldiers. Even the best have their bad days - or campaigns, in this case. This is an absolutely first rate work on one of the most important (Harsh obviously believes the most important) campaigns of the ACW. Unfortunately, because of its academic format and size, it will not reach wide audiences. For those willing to make the effort, they will be richly rewarded.

Just get Business Plan Pro, instead
This book might have helped SOMEONE write a business plan, but it contained only one idea of any interest for me. The authors mention that there is good software on the market to help first-time business plan writers, and they are absolutely correct! The book is a real let-down compared to Business Plan Pro. Your First Business Plan offers over half of its pages as a sample business plan for a company that is: a) NOT a start up (I think a great majority of people writing their FIRST business plan are concerned with start-up information), and

b) NOT a service business (many more businesses provide services than actual products)

So, all in all, this book didn't help me much other than the great advice to go out and buy a good business plan program. So, I pass this advice on to you - free of charge. No reason to pay book prices plus tax and shipping for it!

It gives you all you need to build an excelent Business Plan
I had 3 weeks build a business plan and I had never built one before. I had no idea where to start. - So I bought this book hoping it would help. Not only did it help, It mad possible to finish an excelent business plan in only two weeks, a business plan so professional no one believed it was my first one. - This book will take you step by step from the beginning of your BP to the end of it.

Excellent Reference Material for Business Managers
We took this book and gave copies to department managers around our company and many have implemented the business planning techniques contained in this book with great success. Hazelgren's writing style is clear and concise.

Card book
I got this because the other reviews said how good it was, but i opened it and gave up almost immediatly. The instructions are difficult to follow.

Not totally self working.
The tricks in this book are not totally self working. You have to remember a lot and tell people what to do.

Self-Working = No sleight of hand
This book, along with all the other Fulves Self-Working series are full of really great magic that can be done without years of practice. That however, doesn't mean no practice. As with any presentation before an audience, attention to instructions and good audience management are essential. This means that, just like an actor in a play, the magician-to-be must know exactly what to do and when to do it, what to say and when to say it. This requires several run-throughs with no audience. (Sound like practice to me!!) I think that 'self-working' in the title means that you can do the effects without working on sleights for several months/years before you can do anything magical. This material can be presented after a few hours practice!

5 Phases of Project Management
This is a good entry level book for a class. Easy to read and has great graphics. Good starting point book for project management. Would like to see them update a little bit as it is 10 years old

Excellent, covers all the bases
A well researched book with excellent templates to help put all this knowledge into place. I am currently using it to help me manage the development of a large power plant in Brazil. I highly recommend reading and following the principles outlined by Wysocki and Weiss. A valuable tool for any project manager.

The most useful methodology in the field.
This book was extremely helpful in providing a framework for structuring my work group's projects. After implementing some new methods, our efficiency and productivity increased by at least 50 percent. It is easy to use and understand. Also good for training.

Reveiw on "Behavior Modification, What it is and how to do"
I am a student at Ohio University and I have had the unpleasant experience of having to use this particular book for 3 quarters now and I absolutely hate it I think it is the most ambiguous mess I have ever seen it is confusing and redundant. My professor who is using the book for this term is now dropping the book also! He feels the same as myself and all of the students who have had to endure this book. I am so glad future students will not have to struggle with this in the future....by the way I was a 4.0 student until this particular class and the use of this book my average has now dropped to a 3.8. I am a straight A student in EVERY other aspect of my college career. I will bring my average back to the 4.0 I am used, to with no thanks to this book and its rediculous content.

Textbook, But Not
I used this book as a special education undergraduate. I found it contained all of the essential information in a format that was not bogged down with technical language. I have since loaned the book to several parents who found its information useful and its style easy and unintimidating. It is full of common, everyday examples in order to help one transition from the theoretical to the concrete.

Behavior Modification: What it is and how to do it
This book provides an excellent introduction to behavioral theory and practice. The examples are interesting and helpful.

A waste of time and money
I picked up this book about five months ago, and I have to say I was truly looking forward to a complex plot mixed with fly-fishing. Unfortunantely, the book contains neither a well written plot, or beautiful descriptions of days on the water. The Snowfly is not worth your time or money, unless you have a severe case of insomnia.

Brillant
The Snowfly is the most brillant book i have ever read. There is never a dull moment, and i couldn't put the book down. The author combines suspense with intrigue. I never knew what was going to happen next.

The Snowfly was fantastic!
What an incredible story. I could not put it down. There needs to be more books like this, intermingling flyfishing with life and such. The author showed great diversification with this story; murder, travel, sex, humor, death and of course.. discussing and defining that "troutbug" so many of us get.

Thanks Mr. Heywood.

You Can Call Me Al : The Colorful Journey of College Basketball's Original Flower Child
Published in Paperback by Prairie Oak Press (01 June, 2001)
Author: Joseph Declan Moran
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

Missing
Mr. Moran does an excellent job of recapping the Al McGuire era at Marquette University. He also tracks the career of Coach Al especially well. The book was a labor of love, but the author should have more closely looked at the "whole" Al McGuire. That's why the book is, at best, average.

What's missing is a sense of color brought on by perspective; the deep-down interpretations that the passage of time permits. As a long-time follower of Marquette basketball -- and a Marquette J-school grad to boot -- I believe too much of the book was newsy. Mr. Moran recanted stories that were well-known and well-publicized. Case in point: the oft-repeated Delsman fight.

What would have been interesting was to probe deeply the fundamental emotions that brought together some of the best college basketball talent and Al McGuire. What emotions were running through Jim Chones' psyche as he rejected UCLA and others for McGuire and MU? Or, why in succession, did Larry McNeill, Maurice Lucas and Bo Ellis all choose Marquette. What did their heart say? What was so special about this man that his players would attend college at Concrete University (despite McGuire's pleadings that Marquette had "green grass")with virtually no other African-American students.

The ballplayers had a profound impact on Marquette's outlook toward relationships among African-American and caucasian students. Mr. Moran documents this seldom discussed element of life at MU well. He effectively illustrates the Jesuit-Catholic response to one of the most basic precepts of the Christian church.

On the basketball side, Al lost as much talent to the NBA as he recruited in the early 1970s. Certainly the arguable loss of at least one and possibly two or more national championships weighed heavily on his psyche. We know from the author that Al wanted his players to make money -- but could have they made more by staying in school? The author glosses over these emotional and practical issues. It would have been nice to know what happened when the NBA called for Jim Chones. The look on McGuire's face, the visceral emotion that was overcome by logic and compassion.

As baketball's flower child, McGuire's views about casual drug use would have been interesting. Especially given that marijuana use on campus was common at the time and one star player was arrested for marijuana possession in the championship year.

Finally, there was very little discussion of what has since happened to Al's players. The author glosses over this point. The success of any college professor -- including a coach -- is the measurement of his impact on the post college career of his players. That's not just the NBA. It's what they did with their education and their lives.

What would have made this book special was to make it an oral history. Let then author narrate and then, rather than quote witnesses and Al, let people tell their Al stories in their own words.

Fascinating subject slowly delivered
I love basketball and always thought Al was a great guy. While I looked forward to this book and am glad I read it, I cannot recommend it. Al is an interesting funny guy but that doesn't come out in the book. The book reads clinically without the emotion of Al McGuire felt through the writer. I did enjoy hearing of his early life but it was too long. Same for Belmont Abbey. Along the way you do learn interesting facts like he had a losing record when hired at Marquette. But, generally, as much as I liked the subject, the book did not live up.

PERSONAL MCGUIRE STORY.

I was at the Memphis State game described on Page 229 where with 45 seconds left and up by 5, an MSU player stepped in the foul lane losing the Tigers a one and one and probably the game. Yes, Al left the court with both hands raised. Raised in what he later called the "Irish salute", middle finger extended. Al had incited the crowd, touched us with his enthusiasm. When he came later to call some Keith Lee games, he fondly remembered the game and how he left the field. This is the "Al" the country knew and loved.

Excellent recap of the life and career of a true character
The book is must reading for those of us who only remotely knew of the specifics of the Coach. It provides wonderful insight into a great leader, who never gave up his individuality, and certainly has made a permanent place for himself in college basketball. The author did an excellent job of research and provides a throughly researched journey into Al's life. Congratulations, Declan. I look forward to your next venture. It is good to see success coming from St. Pascal's
