Hostages of Each Other
This book is about how the Nuclear Energy Industry "bootstrapped" itself to improve operational and nuclear safety after the TMI accident. Prior to TMI, the NRC had been enforcing minimum safety requirements, not promoting operational excellence. The industry realized it might not economically survive another TMI, and while the fundamental design of the plants appeared to be safe, significant operational improvements were needed to reduce the chance another similar accident. The industry formed INPO (the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations) to share information and resources to promote excellence and safety in operations. The book is full of stories of what happened and quotes from the principles involved (no heavy technical stuff) and I found it an enjoyable, interesting read. The author is a professor at the Center for Public Policy at Virginia Tech, and I detected no pro or anti-nuke sentiment, just lots of well researched information. Probably the best book I have read on the subject.

The House of Alarcon

A beautiful, sensual, lyrical book
I found out about 'The House of Alarcon' through reading another of Dispenza's books, 'The Way of the Traveler.' This is a novel of tremendous beauty, sensual and lyrical. I had no idea this novel existed, or why it didn't become a huge hit when it was published. It's a great reading experience -- fascinating.

The book goes back and forth between the present and the past -- all the way back to the conquistadors, in fact. A plot of land that is given to the Alarcon family by the King of Spain in the 1500s becomes the theater for amazing and magical family dramas. This is absolutely first-rate writing, and a story that you can practically feel through the pages.

Read it -- you'll love it.

Our family's favorite children's Christmas story.
Simple yet profound, clever, yet touching, this masterful little story is a gem. To a heartbroken young porcupine who doesn't get a part in the Baby in the Manger play because the other animals taunt that a prickly porcupine is unsuitable for such an honor, the mother's oft-quoted words, "You are the light of my life!" are consoling. The surprise ending is touching and beautiful. The story fosters sensitivity, is superbly illustrated and full of laughter and tears, and the mother's words will become part of your own family life.

Essential and ecumenical reading
How to Find the Truth: A Truth-Seeking Guide For Christians, Jews, Muslims, Pagans And Anyone With A Desire To Find The Truth by Joseph J. Brink II (in cooperation with non-profit group Americans In Alliance) is a 443-page compendium of informative instructions for developing a simple to use, systematic and sound approach to discovering and determining what is true in life situations regardless of religious affiliation or background. A great deal of the world's troubles are the result of miscommunication, misstatement, and misunderstanding between (and among) different religious and cultural groups. Stressing how the similarities between differing peoples and faiths are more critical to achieving harmony than emphasizing the differences, How To Find The Truth can effectively assist anyone to winnow out the sound from the unsound, the true from the false, the essential from the superfluous, the benign from the malignant. How To Find The Truth should be considered essential and ecumenical reading for anyone who seeks to understand themselves and others within any religious, philosophic, political, cultural, or societal context.

How To Pray
How to Pray, by Reverend Joseph Nassal and Nancy Burke, is a "nondenominational primer [that] shows you how to connect with a power beyond yourself."

Nassal and Burke open their book with a description of what or to whom we pray to, and highlight some of the history of God as Father and God as Mother. They explain that "prayer is all about relationship with God, regardless of the images and names we use to build that relationship."

They discuss the different forms that prayer can take, and explain the differences between prayer and meditation. Prayer is not an exercise or a convenience, they say, but rather "it is a human necessity and Divine commandment." They add that "your prayer relationship will be private, intimate and uniquely yours."

Although prayer is a natural action, sometimes it's hard to find the time to pray, or to know just how to go about it. Nassal and Burke suggest forming the habit of prayer by reserving a time and place for prayer--to plan a time for prayer just as we plan time to eat, sleep, or mow the lawn. They say "cultivating a prayerful life is no different" than cultivating other good habits. They offer specific tips on how regular prayer can be made a part of even the busiest life.

Although they maintain that prayer is a private process and that each will find "your own voice and words," Nassal and Burke devote the second half of the book to printed prayers as assistance to those who need it. They grouped the prayers into classifications such as gratitude and thanksgiving, petition, and praise.

How To Pray is for all those seeking a closer relationship with the Divine in their lives.

Finally.' Information on how to repair those favorite toys.
Clear and easy to understand with emphasis on how to repair soft cloth body dolls such as old Mattel talking toys popular in the 1960's. It's very wonderful to hear those old childhood memories talk again, such as Captain Kangaroo and the Dr. Seuss gang. This little booklet explains it all in plain and easy to understand diagrams and instructions. There are even quite a few B&W photographs of pullstring toys, some quite old characters. Fun to read, even if you're not going to repair an old toy.

Joseph A. Mannino's biology book is the best I have ever read. Every time I turned the page, it was like opening up a new adventure. It taught me everything from the structure of a sperm to the make up of nasal discharge. I can only hope for a second volume.
